WellBeMed Functional Foods To Help You Sleep

Half of the World's population will go through something that isn't really talked about - menopause, and for the majority of those women, they will get negative symptoms.

Menopause is when a woman stops having periods and cannot get pregnant naturally anymore. Due to oestrogen and progesterone diminishing in the body during this time then women can suffer from a range of troublesome symptoms.

Symptoms range from hot flushes, to dry eyes, aches and pains all over, to fluctuating mood, tiredness to increased anxiety, and allergies to difficulty in sleeping. It can be a difficult time for many women. I know how difficult it can be as I am going through this at the moment.  The first line of treatment is hormone replacement therapy but many women try natural treatments alongside to help with the symptoms.

Now if you are looking for some help for sleep disturbances there is a company that may be able to help you. Welcome to WellBeMed. This is a collaborative post, I have been sent these products to review for an honest opinion.

WellBeMed are a company that produce WellBeSleep® products, a range of tasty foods to consume just before bedtime, to help aid sleep.

The company was founded in the early 2000s based on an idea for developing healthy and well-documented products that can help against lifestyle-related health problems. The first product launched was the WellBeSleep chocolate bar with lemon balm that can help people when they have temporary difficulties falling asleep at night. Shortly after came WellBeSleep Shot, also with lemon balm that can help people to fall asleep easier.

The WellBeSleep chocolate bar

The WellBeSleep chocolate bar is made from 35% dark chocolate as well as oats and other ingredients and also has the added ingredient of lemon balm.

Although made with dark chocolate, the chocolate bar didn't taste bitter and is fairly sweet.

It reminded me of a Wispa bar but much denser, it has a pleasant taste. If you are mildly hungry, I think it would be good as a light snack. It was quite satisfying. This could be due to the addition of oats.

The WellBeSleep® Shots contain all organic ingredients. The flavours are:

  • Apple Tumeric and Elderflower
  • Apple and Blueberry
  • Beetroot and Ginger

Besides the main ingredients mentioned above the only other ingredients are hops extract and lemon balm.

The chocolate bars and the shots are formulated to take 30 minutes before sleep. Anecdotal evidence suggests you can also take them if you wake in the early hours of the morning.

“Menopause for me began at age 52 years and I have always suffered from anxious and stressful thoughts at night that would wake me up around 4am. I found it very hard to relax and go back to sleep until I started drinking WellBeSleep shots. The drinks calm me down and I seem to drift back to sleep really easily. I much preferred trying these products instead of any medication as they are all natural,” says Anna LangÃ¥ker, Malmö.

Recently my sleep has been disturbed, but since being put on HRT it has been improving. I tried the chocolate bars and the shots. I didn't have any problems getting off to sleep and also didn't wake up as I have been. Whether that is to do with taking these bars and shots it's hard to tell. The shots were fresh-tasting and really felt that they were doing me good. They are also only 60 MLS so not too big, especially useful for ladies that have to get up in the middle of the night to use the toilet!

My favourite was the apple and blueberry. It was really delicious. I couldn't taste the lemon balm in the shots but this is the active ingredient. The apple, turmeric and elderflower tasted sweet of apple with a hint of elderflower. It had a slight middle eastern flavour, presumingly due to the Tumeric. The beetroot and ginger tasted good, and not strongly of ginger which I was pleased about as I don't really like ginger in drinks. It also has apple juice mixed in. The shots all have less than 50 calories each and the chocolate bar has 114 calories

Lemon balm has traditionally been used to treat anxiety and stress as well as insomnia. It's also used as a digestive.

WellBeSleep products are very popular throughout Sweden and recently launched in the UK through Ocado costing £1.99 for one WellBeSleep® Bar (32g) or £13.99 for the WellBeSleep® Bar Box containing seven bars. The shots are £1.99 each.

If you are having problems with sleep and don't want to revert to medication, it is worth giving these WellBeSleep products a try, especially if you are going through the menopause. If you do give them a try let me know what you think!
