Hair Loss In Women

Hair loss doesn’t just happen to men - and whilst it can be upsetting and humiliating for both men and women, women often tend to take it harder as there can be more stigma attached to female hair loss.

Losing your hair may be upsetting but there are a number of things that can be done to rebuild that confidence that you might have lost once your hair started to fall out. There are plenty of hairpieces for women out there and various other options as well to address the causes of hair loss and help disguise it too.

But what should you consider if you are suffering hair loss as a woman?

Who can suffer from it?

It is estimated that around 70% of women over the age of 70 suffer from female-pattern baldness which is the most common type of hair loss and thought to be inherited. However there are plenty of different types of hair loss - you might just be suffering from thinning hair or you may be losing great handfuls. Women of any age can suffer from different variations of hair loss,

What can cause hair loss?

As mentioned above, the most common type of hair loss in women is female-pattern baldness and this is thought to be a genetic issue. However there are many other reasons why you may be experiencing the loss of your hair. Perhaps you’ve been suffering from stress? This would be an explanation. There is also the chance that a medical condition could be causing it or even medication that you are taking for an existing medical condition.

What can you do?

There are a number of things you can do to combat female hair loss. There are many great wigs available out there now, looking natural and designed to give you confidence. A particularly great collection is Silk Base - light, strong, durable and with great ventilation. You may want to consider hair extensions or simply embrace your hair loss but occasionally wear head scarves.

If however you are looking for a more permanent solution, laser treatment may be worth a try or even in extreme cases, a hair transplant. Depending on the severity of your hair loss, you may be able to take some medication for it to try and combat and reverse the actions.

How can you cope?

Losing your hair can be a distressing experience and there are plenty of stages you may go through. It might take you a little while but you may learn to accept it and embrace it; you may struggle every single day - whichever you do is completely fine and is a completely natural way of dealing with the situation.

It is definitely worth sitting down and talking to people about how it is affecting you though whether that is family, friends or your GP. It is also worth doing your own research and see what works best for you.

I hope this post has helped you today. Hair loss in women is something that is not talked about enough and is often seen as a taboo subject. We should be talking about it more and not afraid to ask for help or support if we need it in that situation.

  4. I struggle with hairloss, I'm lucky in some ways that I had a lot to start with, but every now and then I think about trying different things to make it look better as I have this halo of baby fuzz hair I can do nothing with. I will have to look into wigs.
