Managing Type 4 Hair Types: Some Tips and Tricks

Having your hair look its best requires constant effort – and that’s even more so the case if you have Type 4 hair. This type of hair is characterised by very tightly coiled strands with a unique texture and comes with a distinct set of challenges that you don’t have to face with other types.

In this article, you’ll learn about the different aspects of caring for Type 4 hair, whether it be what products to use, styling tips, and how to protect it!

Understanding Type 4 Hair: The Basics

First things first: how do we actually define Type 4 hair? It’s already been established that tight curls and coils make up this hair type, but there are also three different subcategories:

Type 4A

4A hair types are characterised by a more bouncy texture and a definite ‘S’ pattern to the strands.

Type 4B

4B types feature Z-shaped curls with more angular definition and are generally tighter and less voluminous.

Type 4C

When it comes to 4C types, you’re looking at the tightest coils possible with barely any visible curl.

Even though there’s quite a bit of variation between these three subcategories, they all share the same characteristics and are cared for in more or less the same way.

Essential Care

Next, it’s time to consider the key steps you need to take to look after this hair type. Type 4 hair is naturally drier and at a greater risk of breakages and shrinkage. This is because the tight structure makes it more difficult for your body’s natural scalp oils to travel down to the strands to condition them. For this reason, you need to take care to add that conditioning back in with the products you choose.

Here are the main elements you should be thinking about:

The Importance of Hydration

In many ways, hydrating the hair should be your main priority if you’re Type 4 for the reasons outlined above. Using a sulfate-free shampoo can be a game changer – regular shampoos strip your hair of their natural oils, which is already a problem for Type 4.

You should also be using a high-quality deep conditioner at least twice per week to combat the issue, and it’s a good idea to consider leave-in hair masks and butters once every now and then for an even greater conditioning effect.

The LOC Method

The LOC (Liquid, Oil, Cream) method can be an invaluable strategy for those with Type 4 hair. Essentially, it’s a layering technique that you perform in a three-stage sequence.

You’ll begin with a liquid leave-in conditioner, then you’ll move on to an oil which helps to seal in moisture (oils like jojoba, argan, and castor are the most commonly used) and finally, a cream, which serves to lock everything in.

The process functions as an intensive moisturisation and hydration method for when your hair is feeling particularly dry and tired, or you can simply schedule one of these sessions every month or so.

Detangling

Given the special texture of Type 4 hair, you’ll also need to put effort into some sort of detangling routine – this hair type gets wrapped up and tangled very easily, so you don’t want to let a small problem grow larger and have to end up going to the salon to get it sorted out.

In a few simple steps, you can deal with it on your own. When your hair is damp having been washed and conditioned, use a wide-toothed comb and start slowly brushing through, working from the ends up to the roots. To prevent hurting yourself by pulling on the hair at the roots, hold your hair with your other hand a couple of inches up from where you’re brushing.

You can also apply detangling spray for an extra level of protection!

On Sleeping

Finally, caring for your Type 4 hair doesn’t end when you go to bed – there are provisions to be made for while you’re asleep to make sure your hair remains in good condition.

The goal is to both reduce friction which can lead to tangles, and prevent moisture loss. Regular cotton pillows can exacerbate both of these issues, so it’s best to switch to a silk pillowcase. Failing that, you can choose to wrap your hair in a scarf or bonnet at night to protect it from your bedding.

Styling Safely

Before moving on to styling, it’s prudent to take measures to protect your hair before getting ready for the day. Here are some tips to make sure you don’t damage your hair as you style it:

Make Sure Your Hair Is Clean and Hydrated Before You Begin

It’s always important to start with a good base, and especially for Type 4 people, ensuring your hair has been properly washed and conditioned is key. Those with Type 4 hair typically need to use more products than people with other types, and so you want to ensure any residue from the previous day is removed before starting again. If not, this can exacerbate issues of dryness, frizz, and tangling.

Use a Scalp Spray

Scalp sprays are a good preventative measure for all hair types. They can be applied prior to styling, ensuring the scalp is properly moisturised during the day, and protected from the dryness styling products can create.

Be Careful With Tight Hair Styles

A major potential issue with Type 4 hair is that many of the hairstyles associated with it are very tight. This can lead to a problem called traction alopecia – a form of balding that occurs by damaging the hair follicle to the extent that it doesn’t grow back. In its early stage, traction alopecia can be reversed if the constant pulling force ceases, but in serious cases, permanent balding can occur. At this point, a hair transplant is the only option.

For these reasons, it’s best to avoid hairstyles that scrape the hair back into a tightly pulled position that causes a lot of tension – or at least only wear these styles very occasionally.

Great Type 4 Styles to Try

While you might not initially think so, there are a ton of different styling options for Type 4 hair: it’s simply about experimenting, getting creative, and discovering over time what best suits your subtype and overall aesthetic. Here are some styles you can try to figure that out:

The Afro Puff

The afro puff is a cute, quick and easy style most anyone with Type 4 hair can try. It involves brushing out your hair to the back of the head and then simply securing it with a hair band. It’s an excellent everyday choice that always looks great!

The Frohawk

The Frohawk is a great go-to if you really want to show off your hair type. A play on the traditional mohawk, it’s styled by gathering the hair into multiple sections, pinning the sides up, and letting the middle portion from front to back hang free.

Not many people rock this style, so try it out for yourself and see how it sits with you.

Wash and Go

Part of the beauty of Type 4 hair is that after you’ve washed, conditioned, and applied any protection, you’re good to go. Unlike other hair types, the way your hair naturally falls into a bouncy, voluminous mane with no effort is one of the biggest perks.

Feel free to not make any changes, and you’re still bound to get a ton of compliments!

Crocheted Braids

Crocheted hair are unique, great-looking protective options people with Type 4 hair can try out. Unlike the tight, pulling styles described earlier which can seriously damage the hair and scalp, protective styles reduce the risk of damage and exposure to the natural elements that make managing this hair type difficult.

With crocheted braids, extensions are woven into your natural hair after it’s been cornrowed, and from here, your options for styling are almost limitless!

Bantu Knots

Bantu Knots are a super-cute, super-fun style anyone with Type 4 hair can try out. The finished look is comprised of multiple small bundles of hair situated two or so inches apart from one another, and it’s achieved by dividing the hair into sections and twisting each section into a knot.

The Bantu knot style also has a lot of versatility – you can then unravel the knots after they’ve been in for a while for springy, flowing, volume.

Box Braids

Box braids always look trendy. They work by dividing the hair and segmenting it in a way whereby the scalp resembles a square grid. From the centre of each square emanates a braid.

Box braids are another style famed for their versatility; there is a myriad of different styles, segmentations, and colours that can be used to really make this look pop!

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, you now have some useful tips and strategies for managing this hair type. While it can seem like a curse initially because of the comparative extra work it needs versus other hair types, once you get things right, Type 4 hair is one of the most unique, beautiful blessings you could have been given!

8 Common Hairdryer Mistakes to Avoid for Healthier, More Beautiful Hair

When it comes to hair care, the humble hairdryer is our trusty companion. However, it's important to use it correctly to avoid causing damage to your hair. In this post, I will explore some of the most common hairdryer mistakes and provide you with tips on how to avoid them. By steering clear of these pitfalls, you'll be well on your way to avoiding damage and achieving healthier, more beautiful hair.

1. Skipping The Heat Protectant

blowdry hair

One of the biggest mistakes people make is neglecting to use a heat protectant spray before using a hairdryer. This crucial step helps create a barrier between your hair and the high heat, minimising damage caused by the styling process. Make sure to apply a quality heat protectant spray evenly throughout your hair before turning on the dryer.

2.  Using The Wrong Heat Setting

Hairdryers come with different heat settings for a reason. Using high heat unnecessarily can lead to dryness, frizz, and even breakage. Opt for lower heat settings, especially if your hair is fine or prone to damage. Reserve the highest heat setting for stubborn spots or very thick hair.

3. Holding The Dryer Too Close

Keeping the hairdryer too close to your hair can lead to excessive heat exposure and damage. Maintain a distance of at least 6 inches (15 centimetres) between the dryer and your hair. This ensures that the heat is distributed evenly and reduces the risk of overheating.

4. Ignoring The Importance Of A Proper Pre-Dry

Rushing through the pre-drying phase is a common blunder. Before using any styling tools, it's crucial to get your hair about 70-80% dry using just the dryer. This not only minimises heat exposure but also makes the styling process much more efficient.

5. Overusing The Hairdryer

Constantly subjecting your hair to heat can cause severe damage over time. Whenever possible, give your hair a break from styling tools. Embrace air drying or adopt heatless styling techniques to reduce the frequency of using a hairdryer.

6. Neglecting To Clean The Dryer's Air Vents

A clogged air vent restricts airflow, making your hairdryer less effective and potentially causing it to overheat. Regularly clean the vents using a small brush or a cotton swab to ensure optimal performance. Some of the higher-end hairdryers such as the BLOW hairdryer by mdlondon have a self-cleaning function too.

7. Skipping The Cool Shot

Most hairdryers come equipped with a cool shot button. This blasts a stream of cool air, which helps set your style and reduce frizz. Don't forget to finish your drying session with a cool shot to lock in your look and keep your hair shiny.

8. Tugging And Pulling With The Brush

When using a round brush to style, be gentle. Tugging and pulling can lead to breakage and damage. Instead, opt for a brush with soft bristles and use a steady, controlled motion.

Conclusion

By avoiding these common hairdryer mistakes, you'll be well on your way to achieving healthier, more beautiful hair. Remember to use a heat protectant, choose the right heat settings, maintain a safe distance, and incorporate a proper pre-dry into your routine. Regular maintenance of your dryer and adopting a gentle approach while styling will go a long way in preserving the health and vitality of your locks. Here's to fabulous, damage-free hair!

The Best Hairstyles For Low-Maintenance Travellers

Heading off to an adventure? Whether you’re trekking through ancient ruins, lounging on a pristine beach, or venturing into bustling markets, these fabulous hairdos will keep you looking effortlessly chic, so you can focus on what truly matters: discovering the world and having a blast!

So, grab your suitcases, charge your camera, and check out these simple, easy, basic hairstyles you can do while travelling.

Natural Hair

If you have 4C-type hair, one of the best things you can do is go on vacation with your natural hair. The great thing about this is there are many variations to play around with here, from twist-out to braids, to mohawks and puffballs; there’s a lot of versatility when you wear your hair naturally, and you have the freedom to switch up your look daily.

Beach Waves

This hairstyle is the go-to for beach vacations due to how easy it is to achieve. After washing your hair with an oil-rebalancing shampoo, apply a salt spray to wet hair, followed by a couple of spritzes of detangler. Once all of those products have been incorporated, simply blow dry your hair and brush it lightly.

The Messy Bun

bun
The simplicity of this hairstyle makes it ideal for the lazy traveller. Brush all of your hair into a high ponytail, then take a scrunchie and wrap it once over the ponytail. Then, use the other hand to spread the hair around the ponytail base before wrapping the scrunchie twice more over this base. You can wrap it more or less, depending on the thickness of your hair.

Take the hair that’s left sticking out and wrap it around the front of your head, and tuck it into the scrunchie to form another loop at the front of the bun. This hairstyle is great for when you’re swimming, and it’s ideal for square and round face shapes. Make sure to always use a scrunchie to help prevent hair breakage.

Traditional Side-Braid

For this hairstyle, you want to bring all of your hair toward your left shoulder and then divide it into three smaller sections. Cross the side strands over the middle strand and then once the braid reaches the bottom, go over it and pull on the edges to make it a little bit bigger.

Tie the end with a hair band and then take a small piece of hair and wrap it around the hair band before wrapping a second hair band over the bottom of the wrapped piece. Make sure to include the ends to help keep the wrapped piece in place.

Straight Down the Middle Braid

This style is quick and easy to do without a mirror. Divide up a section of hair at the top of your head and split it into three sections. Cross the side strands under the middle strands while bringing in new sections of hair, working down the back of your head until the braid reaches the nape of your neck. Continue the braid without bringing in any new hair, and tie up the end with a clear elastic band.

Claw Clip Spiral

This hairstyle is perfect if you have a blowout or you curled your hair before the trip and want to take a nap without getting any kinks in your hair. Start by combining all of your hair together at the top of your head, twist it together, and then wrap it into a spiral or a bun at the top of your head and secure it with a claw clip. When you’re ready to let your hair down, simply take out the clip to continue enjoying the volume your hair had before the trip.

Curls

This is a great hairstyle for thin hair, and all you need to get started is to part your hair into three sections on both sides and use a curling wand to curl each section. Make sure to hold for at least 20 seconds per section and wrap the hair around the wand.

Once all of the sections are curled, run your fingers through your hair to loosen the curls and finish with some hair spray. This whole process takes about five minutes, and it’ll give you a cute wavy hairstyle that’ll hold for most of the day unless there’s a lot of wind or humidity.

The Messy Textured Cut

This short, unisex hairstyle doesn't take too much effort, and it’s an effortless way to create an easy holiday look. Simply just blow dry your hair forward and add in some clay for texture. Yep, it’s that simple!

If you are experiencing hair loss, you are not alone. We all want beautiful hair, but millions suffer from hair loss yearly. There are many ways to treat hair loss, but if you want a more natural approach, read on.

woman with hair loss

In this post, I will share some tips to help you regrow your hair naturally. Keep in mind that results may vary depending on the individual. Try these tips and see what works best for you.

1. Understand the cause of hair loss

Hair loss can be a frustrating and embarrassing problem, but it is also fairly common. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, as many as 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States suffer from hair loss. While there are a number of products on the market that claim to regrow hair, many of these are expensive and have little scientific evidence to support their claims. Fortunately, there are several natural ways to encourage hair growth. One of the most important things you can do is to understand the cause of your hair loss. There are several different types of hair loss, each with its own set of causes. Once you know what is causing your hair loss, you can take steps to address the issue. For example, if your hair loss is due to stress or a medical condition, there are a number of lifestyle changes or treatments that can help. If your hair loss is due to genetics, however, you may need to explore other options, such as surgery or medication. Understanding the cause of your hair loss is an important first step in finding a solution that works for you.

2. Choose the right natural treatment for you

If you are looking for tips to help you regrow your hair naturally, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of success. First, it is important to choose the right natural treatment for your specific situation. There are many different options available, and not all of them will be equally effective for everyone. You may need to experiment with different approaches before you find one that works best for you. In addition, it is important to be consistent with your treatment and to follow instructions carefully. Finally, remember that regrowing hair takes time, so don't expect miracles overnight. By following these tips, you can improve your chances of seeing results.

3. Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle

One of the best things you can do for your hair is to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help to promote hair growth. In addition, getting regular exercise, managing stress levels, and getting enough sleep can also help to keep your hair healthy and strong. While there are no guarantees when it comes to hair regrowth, following these tips can give you the best chance of success.

4. Use essential oils to promote hair growth

One way to help your hair regrow naturally is to use essential oils. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that can be used for a variety of purposes, including promoting hair growth. A number of different essential oils have been shown to stimulate hair growth, including peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and lavender oil. To use essential oils for hair growth, you can either add a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner, or you can massage the oils into your scalp. You should do this once or twice a week for best results. In addition to using essential oils, there are a number of other things you can do to promote hair growth, such as eating a healthy diet and reducing stress levels.

If you’re looking for help with hair loss, be sure to check out a hair clinic. They offer a variety of services that can help you regrow your hair naturally. Schedule a consultation today to learn more about what they can do for you. In the meantime, try following some of these tips to help promote healthy hair growth.

The Main Types Of Hair Loss And Hair Loss Solutions

Some hair loss is normal, but when hair loss becomes troublesome then it can really affect your self-esteem. There are many reasons for hair loss, let's have a look at some of these and what you can do about this condition. This is an ad.

What's normal?

hair on brush

Every day they say we lose between 50 and 100 hairs on average. The condition of your hair can affect hair loss and if it is dry and over-processed it may break easier. However, if you think that hair loss is becoming a real problem then there are some things you can do.

Causes of hair loss

According to the NHS website article on hair loss, there are a number of causes to this common condition. These can include illness, stress, cancer treatment, weight loss and Vitamin D deficiency and iron deficiency. If your hair loss is bothering you, your first port of call should be to see your GP. They can examine you and check your health, with a combination of blood tests, and a physical examination.  If you are embarrassed about your baldness you can get an online appointment with a doctor through an online pharmacy. This is straightforward to do and can save you time getting a GP appointment locally.

What can a blood test show?

A blood test can show the level of vitamins and minerals in your blood. This is important as it can show your overall health level, as well as deficiencies. Vitamin D and iron have both been linked to hair loss for example. It can also show your hormone levels. Hormone levels and hair loss are linked to male pattern baldness, baldness in women and baldness related to menopause, where the pattern is thinness across the scalp, not a receding hairline as in men.

Do you need treatment?

Some hair loss doesn't need treatment and hair will grow back without intervention. Some hair loss will be a natural process of getting older as well.  If you do need treatment there are several treatments available appropriate to your condition. No treatment, however, is 100 per cent effective.

Types of treatments available for hair loss

hair loss

Hair loss solutions are available and are varied but typically include medication and steroid creams and injections. Other solutions include hair transplants and wigs as well as relaxation techniques and psychotherapy to deal with stress.

Medication can address vitamin and hormone deficiencies which can get to the root of the problem (no pun intended!). If you want to look at alternatives to regular medications, you may want to check out hormone balance supplements or other supplements within a similar line, but it does depend on your needs and how your body responds. Medication includes Regaine, Finasteride and Dutasteride which are designed for male pattern baldness. These medications only work for the length of time you take the medication but can be successful although they don't work for everyone and of course can have side effects.

Steroid creams and injections can be used to treat baldness in alopecia for example with various levels of success.  This is not suitable for baldness due to ageing and again can have side effects.

Hair transplants can be a solution but it is a major intervention. When someone has a hair transplant, they have existing hair cells moved to the thinning patches on their head. It's important to find a surgeon who is qualified and experienced in carrying out this type of surgery as it can be a big operation and expensive too. If you are going to have a hair transplant be sure to understand any possible complications of the procedure in full.

wigs

There are many synthetic and real hair wigs and hairpieces available today that are more natural-looking than in the past and that can cover hair loss. This is a real instant but temporary alternative to hair loss but does have cost implications, with real hair wigs being much more expensive than synthetic wigs.

Some hair loss can be caused by stress. Alopecia can be triggered by stress so looking at your health and well-being and trying to reduce stress can help with hair loss. Ways to reduce stress include changing your life so the stressful thing that caused it is reduced, exercising to relieve stress and meditation, and counselling and psychotherapy. Support groups for hair loss can help your emotional well-being as well.

Conclusion

There are many reasons for hair loss but there are solutions out there that can help. Hair loss can really affect your self-esteem so be sure to seek out help if this is the case.

What To Consider When Having A Hair Transplant

If hair loss has been bothering you for some time, you may have been looking into remedies or solutions to your problem. Some people decide to just let it happen, others decide on a temporary solution such as a wig or a toupee but there are other more permanent solutions.

One such solution is to have a hair transplant. You have probably heard about them before because of certain celebrities such as Wayne Rooney and George Sampson. As with all processes such as this, there are plenty of things you need to consider before committing to something so big.

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a procedure to move hair to an area of your head which is bald or the hair is extremely thin.

Who can have one?

Not everyone will be suitable for one so it is important to know whether you are beforehand. Such cosmetic surgery is suitable for people with permanent baldness which is the type that runs in families. Other hair loss causes such as alopecia are not suitable for this type of surgery/

Can you afford it?

The surgery isn’t available on the NHS as it is cosmetic surgery so it is vital you work out if you can afford it before you commit to the process - you don’t want to end up in debt! A hair transplant can cost anywhere from £1,000 all the way up to £30,000. It all depends on the type of hair loss and the clinic you are using.

What should you be thinking about?

Once you know you want the surgery, you must check that your clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission and avoid any that aren’t listed. You will also want to ensure you are having your surgery done by a surgeon who is not only qualified but experienced in carrying out such a surgery. It is pretty obvious that they should be registered with the GMC but when people are desperate for a solution, it can be tempting to bypass certain things.

What does it involve?

You will usually have the surgery under local anaesthetic and sedation and they usually take a day but you don’t tend to stay in overnight. You will be told how to care for it and have to be very careful for 2 weeks after. However, you should be able to return to work within a matter of days.

If you have ever considered a hair transplant then I hope this post has been helpful for you. Who knew there was so much to think about?

Why You Should Consider Wearing A Wig

Have you ever considered using a wig? There are many different reasons why you may want to wear a wig and I’d love to talk about it in a little more detail today. Why should you consider a wig? This is an ad.

What uses do wigs have?

Wigs have plenty of uses. Whether you are trying to cover up some hair loss (minimal or extensive), using as a fashion accessory for a night out, using a wig to boost your confidence in yourself, there are plenty of reasons you might be choosing to wear one.

There’s also the possibility that you’ve over styled your natural hair and need to give it some time to recuperate or that you want to follow the latest trend - who can forget when Victoria Beckham debuted the ‘Pob’ and plenty of people followed suit, whether that was by getting their hair cut in the same style or using a wig of the same style.

Famous people such as Cher have been using wigs for years as a way to enhance their look and make it more memorable. They are such a versatile addition to any outfit.

What different types of wigs are there?

Once you’ve decided that you want to try out a wig, then the next thing to consider is the different types of wigs that are out there. You may think opting for a wig is super simple but there are actually plenty of different styles to consider.

There are a few different types of wig - the full lace wig, the 360 lace wig, the lace front wig, the lace wig and the traditional weft wig (also sometimes known as an open weft cap or classic cap).

Wigs can be made from human hair, animal hair or synthetic fibre. Many people tend to opt for human hair wigs, especially virgin hair wigs which are considered to be the best type of wigs in the industry. If you truly want your hair to look smooth, shiny and glamorous, you will want to opt for virgin hair. The high-quality virgin hair has all the cuticles intact and can be treated like your own hair.

Why you should consider a wig

It is safe to say that if you’ve got this far, you’re probably really considering getting a wig. A wig is great for confidence-boosting especially if you are suffering from hair loss. Hair loss can be very distressing and medical intervention to try and halt it or stop it completely can often be intrusive and very expensive. A wig is a great affordable alternative in these cases as you can still go about your daily life without any worry.

Another reason you should consider a wig is if you really enjoy nights out and keeping up with trends. How often do you end up styling your hair the same, wearing the same sort of outfit? A wig adds that touch of glamour and makes your look completely different straight away. Whether you choose long or short, straight or curly, a wig can really pull together a look and ensure you are looking completely fabulous 100% of the time.

I hope this post has been of use to you, helping you to make the right decision for yourself and your hair. What hairstyle do you always wish you’d tried? Why not try a wig?

Hair Loss In Women

Hair loss doesn’t just happen to men - and whilst it can be upsetting and humiliating for both men and women, women often tend to take it harder as there can be more stigma attached to female hair loss.

Losing your hair may be upsetting but there are a number of things that can be done to rebuild that confidence that you might have lost once your hair started to fall out. There are plenty of hairpieces for women out there and various other options as well to address the causes of hair loss and help disguise it too.

But what should you consider if you are suffering hair loss as a woman?

Who can suffer from it?

It is estimated that around 70% of women over the age of 70 suffer from female-pattern baldness which is the most common type of hair loss and thought to be inherited. However there are plenty of different types of hair loss - you might just be suffering from thinning hair or you may be losing great handfuls. Women of any age can suffer from different variations of hair loss,

What can cause hair loss?

As mentioned above, the most common type of hair loss in women is female-pattern baldness and this is thought to be a genetic issue. However there are many other reasons why you may be experiencing the loss of your hair. Perhaps you’ve been suffering from stress? This would be an explanation. There is also the chance that a medical condition could be causing it or even medication that you are taking for an existing medical condition.

What can you do?

There are a number of things you can do to combat female hair loss. There are many great wigs available out there now, looking natural and designed to give you confidence. A particularly great collection is Silk Base - light, strong, durable and with great ventilation. You may want to consider hair extensions or simply embrace your hair loss but occasionally wear head scarves.

If however you are looking for a more permanent solution, laser treatment may be worth a try or even in extreme cases, a hair transplant. Depending on the severity of your hair loss, you may be able to take some medication for it to try and combat and reverse the actions.

How can you cope?

Losing your hair can be a distressing experience and there are plenty of stages you may go through. It might take you a little while but you may learn to accept it and embrace it; you may struggle every single day - whichever you do is completely fine and is a completely natural way of dealing with the situation.

It is definitely worth sitting down and talking to people about how it is affecting you though whether that is family, friends or your GP. It is also worth doing your own research and see what works best for you.

I hope this post has helped you today. Hair loss in women is something that is not talked about enough and is often seen as a taboo subject. We should be talking about it more and not afraid to ask for help or support if we need it in that situation.

Natural Hair Styles That You Should Try

There’s nothing like a good hairstyle to boost your confidence. It can be fun to explore new hairstyles, primarily because of how dramatically they can change the whole look of your outfit. Hairstyles depend a lot on hair length.

If a home haircut is on the schedule for you, here is a list of the best hairdresser scissors online to help you achieve the perfect cut.

With so many great styles to choose from, it can be hard to decide on just one for the day. I've narrowed down my list to only a handful of natural hairstyles that you should try. Here are my favourites.

High Braided Bun

The high braided bun is a modern classic. This style is a medley of two methods of hairstyling. It fuses braids with buns to create a timeless masterpiece. It isn’t too hard to pull off either and is a great style to help make your outfit look dressier.

To make a high braided bun, start by tying your hair back into a simple ponytail. Brushing it beforehand is a good idea if you want a softer look, but you can skip the step without worrying too much about it. Once your loose ponytail is in place at the very top of your head, take the loose hair hanging from it and begin to braid. You can make any kind of braid, from a waterfall braid to a traditional three-strand one.

After making the braid, position a hole or opening between the hair right behind your ponytail. The hole should be large enough to fit the braid through. Keeping your fingers in place inside the hole, push the braid in through it. Repeat this again. The braid should have gone through twice now. Pin your braid around the bun and fasten it with some bobby pins and, voila! Your new high braided bun is ready for action!

Slicked Back Low Ponytail

This one’s a real favourite for working women. The slicked back low ponytail is stylish and easy to maintain. It is the epitome of cutting-edge style without being too over-the-top, making it an office favourite.

The simplest way to get this look is by starting off with well-brushed hair. The style works best on naturally straight hair. For a natural look, avoid flat ironing your hair and use minimal gel.

Start off by lightly applying a gel to the hairline to flatten hair into place. Make sure you pat down any flyaway strands, too! Work your way through the hair with a brush and smoothen any strands that stick out at weird angles.

Finally, tie your hair into a low ponytail, securing it with a sleek hair tie. Any troublesome strands can be pinned in place with a bobby pin.

Side Braid

An effective way to gather your hair into a fun, natural-looking hairstyle is by putting it into a simple braid. To add some fashionable flair to it, style your braid towards either side of your face. The finished braid should rest on one shoulder instead of hanging straight down your back.

Side braids are easy to make. You must first brush or pull your hair towards one side, or one shoulder. You can opt for a middle hair part, but parting your hair to the side is better for this look, so go for it if you can! After choosing a side, braid your hair all the way to your tips. Leave about two inches of hair before tying the braid’s end into place. It’s that simple!

Half Up Bun

A half-up bun can be made in under a minute and looks amazing. Wear this style out to dinner, college, or a fun brunch with friends. The half-up bun will never fail you.

All you need to do to achieve this natural hairstyle is to separate your hair into two sections. Do this by grabbing the top half of your hair and carefully loosening it away from the rest of your strands. Then, throw this hair into a bun and let it rest atop your head. That's all it takes to make a natural half-up bun!

Crown Braid

The crown braid is another classic style seen time and time again decking the heads of celebrities and historical characters we see on TV and film. Making the crown braid is very easy. This hairstyle looks beautiful on all people and is suited to any hair texture.

To make a crown braid, first, draw a neat middle part in your hair. Next, take a strand of hair on each side of the head or similar thickness. The strands should be approximately the same location on both sides and should look like mirror images. Begin to braid the strands, one at a time. When both sides have been braided, pull them together and secure with a rubber band or small clip. Your crown braid is now ready!

Pigtails

The easiest way to put together a natural look is by tying your hair up into two pigtails. This style requires little explanation and minimal expertise to create but is a definite winner. The two pigtail look screams fun and serves as a pleasant reminder of carefree childhood days. Pigtails are the natural hairstyle look you never knew you needed.

There are so many creative natural hairstyles just waiting for you to try out. Go wild with your imagination and hairdressing talent and create a set of fabulous styles to wear anywhere, every day, the sky's the limit.

5 Tips On How To Care For Your Hair Extensions

Do you already have hair extensions or are you planning to buy them? Well, it is important to know how to take care of your hair extensions to prolong their life, after all, they can be expensive to buy and have fitted.

Taking care of hair extensions is just like taking care of your natural hair! You need to frequently shampoo, condition and apply serums to your hair. You should treat your hair extensions with utmost care just like you do for your natural hair. If you take care of your hair extensions, you extend their shelf life and maintain the quality of your hair extensions

Here are 5 tips on how to care for your hair extensions:

Brush gently

If you’ve hair extensions made up of natural Remy hair or human hair, it is essential to brush your hair extensions regularly. However, you should brush your hair extension with a professional brush to avoid breakage and tangles in your hair, or try a special hair detangling brush. You should brush your hair gently so that it doesn’t stress the hair bonds leading to hair breakage and tangles. Never pull your hair while untangling them as it results in breakage and degraded quality.

Treat your hair extensions like you treat your natural hair to extend their life. Remy couture hair extensions are some of the best quality to apply to your hair.

Shampoo your hair on a regular basis

Your natural hair needs shampooing frequently and your hair extensions once a week. Choose a shampoo which is gentle and is not at all harsh. A gentle shampoo does not strip the hair of natural oils and maintains your hair's texture. Shampooing your hair extensions is a normal hair care routine which you ought to follow to keep your hair extensions healthy. You should wash your hair gently as it does not spoil the hair extensions’ natural texture.

You should use a shampoo which does not contain mineral oil, sulphates, parabens, alcohol or other harmful chemicals.

Condition your hair often

A nourishing leave-in conditioner makes your hair extensions remain soft, silky and smooth. The conditioner helps maintain the texture of your hair. Instead of applying an ordinary conditioner, you can choose a nutritive conditioner which is made specially to condition your hair extensions. Apply the conditioner in a downwards direction to make your hair look amazing. You can also use a detangler to make your hair tangle-free.

A leave-in conditioner makes your hair extensions remain healthy. Regular application replenishes essential nutrients which makes your hair appear nourished and rejuvenated.

Allow your hair extensions to dry naturally

It is a proven saying by hair experts that you should not use blow-driers or heat styling methods to dry your hair extensions. The artificial hair drying methods weakens the bond between your strands and makes it prone to breakage and fall. Excessive curling or blow drying will eventually degrade the quality of your hair extensions. It is of utmost importance that your hair extensions should dry naturally and not with any artificial means.

Avoid the use of blow-driers, straighteners, and  curlers frequently on your hair extensions as these methods lay stress and strain on the bonds of hair extensions strands.

Avoid products that contain alcohol or sulphates

Products that contain alcohol and sulphates are extremely harmful and it is often advised not to use them on your natural hair. On the other hand, hair extensions require extra care because they do not get nutrients from your scalp. Products containing alcohol or sulphates make your hair extensions dry and coarse. These ingredients also weaken the bond between your hair strands and deplete the quality of your hair extensions.

These were 5 essential tips on how to take care of hair extensions. If you follow these tips you will make the hair extensions last longer and ensure their health. After all, hair extensions are an excellent way to really transform your look, making you feel confident and beautiful, whatever the occasion.

I wash and dry my hair every day, so it's important to me to have a really great hair dryer. When looking for a hair dryer it's also important to buy a brand I know and trust, so I was looking forward to reviewing the Lee Stafford Blow Dry & Go Hair Kit which was gifted to me for an honest review.

Lee Stafford is an award-winning celebrity hairdresser and personality. You may have seen him on the TV show Celebrity Scissorhands or on Secret Millionaire. He also has a great range of hair products under the Lee Stafford range at Boots.

What I love about this hair dryer set is that it's unashamedly pink and girly. OK, maybe not for everyone but the hot pink colour is very cool.

The quality of the hair dryer is good, the buttons make a satisfying click, it is not too big or small and it is easy to carry around. The hair dryer has three heat settings and two power settings with a handy cool button to set your hair whilst blow drying. When drying my hair I use a round brush to dry under the ends and always blast my hair with some cold air so a cool button is essential to me.

What is extra special about this hairdryer is that it has a keratin infused grill to impart shine, which is a great touch. I think my hair is looking lovely and shiny below as you can see and no shine sprays were added.

Hair Problems And Solutions

There are few things that can affect your self-esteem as much as your hair. Adverts bombard us with models that have shiny, thick, healthy-looking hair but what if you don't have 'perfect' hair?

Most of us at some point in our lives have a hair problem, maybe your hair has become greasy or dry and damaged, maybe you are starting to get the odd grey hair and not sure whether to leave it and accept it or colour your hair. Maybe you are noticing hair loss and not sure what to do. In this article, I will look at different hair problems and possible solutions.

Greasy Hair

Age, hormones and genetics play a big part if your hair condition and if you have greasy hair then all these factors may come into play. You can however, do something about it.

Firstly use a shampoo that is specially formulated for greasy hair, a simple solution that does not add any extra moisturisers. Massage it right into the roots. If you use conditioner, use a lightweight formula just on the ends, you don't want any extra oil on the roots on the hair. Avoid shine sprays as they add extra conditioning treatments.

A dry shampoo can be used in-between shampoos, to help keep the grease at bay. As most are powders they help absorb the grease. Brushing your hair too often can also stimulate oil production so just stick to detangling the ends and avoid brushing from the roots and always brush with a clean brush (make sure you clean and wash the brush regularly).

Avoid touching your hair too often too as that transfers oils from your fingers to your hair.

Dry Hair

If you have dry hair then the same things can affect your hair as those with greasy hair, namely age, hormones and genetics. Dry hair can also be caused by the use of styling implements such as straightening irons, hairdryers and heated rollers.

If you have dry hair don't wash your hair every day if you can help it and use a shampoo designed for dry hair when you do. Use a conditioner every time you wash your hair to add extra moisturiser and when using a heated appliance on your hair use a styling product designed to protect your hair from the heat. If you can avoid using heated appliances then do.

If you bleach or colour your hair try and cut down on how often you do this as it can dry hair out. Using a treatment mask can help improve the moisture in your hair too.

If your hair has become damaged although conditioning treatments especially those with Argan oil can help, the only real way forward is to have it cut and take greater care of your hair in the future.

Hair Loss

Everyone gets hair loss as it's a natural part of your hair renewing itself but when hair loss becomes a problem it can really affect your self-esteem.

Hair loss can be a particular problem in pregnancy and the menopause and both men and women can get male or female pattern baldness, where testosterone combines with dihydrotestosterone and hair is not replaced when it falls out naturally.

Oral contraception, as well as HRT,  can also affect hair loss.

Alopecia areata also known as spot baldness is a medical condition and there are two types - scarring alopecia, where there is fibrosis, inflammation, and loss of hair follicles, and nonscarring alopecia which can be reversible. Steroid injections can help although it's sometimes possible to use a steroid cream, gel or ointment. Scarring alopecia can be permanent, unfortunately.

Often hair loss is temporary but if your hair has not grown back even though your hormones have adjusted themselves it may be time to consult your GP. There may be medications you can take but they don't always work for everyone.

When hair loss is permanent there are ways to mimic your real hair, in simple terms a wig or hairpiece can be used but modern revolutionary treatments such as Advanced Tricho Pigmentation Treatment or ATP are another option. ATP is a specialised process where small amounts of pigment are applied to the scalp or brow to replicate real hair. ATP can help create the illusion of thicker hair or disguise a receding hairline.

Grey Hair

If you have grey hair there are two schools of thought - colour it or embrace it.

If you are going to colour it for the first time I would advise going to a salon and getting advice on what colour suits your skin tone. You may have had very dark hair when you were younger but if you went back to this colour it may look harsh as you get older. Instead of all-over colour, you may want to go for low lights or highlights. Having your hair coloured professionally for the first time will give the best look, and you can pick up tips on how to do it yourself in the future.

Tell me have you ever had problem hair? If you did how did you resolve it?

Winter Hair Care

Now the nights are getting darker, the weather is changing too. Outside it is getting colder and many households have started to put the heating on. At this time of year the cold, wind, rain and centrally heated buildings can play havoc with your hair. Here are some tips on how to protect your hair in the Autumn and Winter.

Winter Hair Care

Tangled Hair

Windy days can mean windswept hair styles. To keep hair looking good, think about tieing long hair back or protect hair under a hat. However if you go for the latter option you then have the flat hair problem.

A light conditioner that won't weigh your hair down will help detangle long hair. Consider a leave-in conditioner like Uniq 1 to carry on nourishing dry and split ends. This product smells divine, and leaves your hair silky smooth whilst protecting and detangling too.

If you have greasy hair don't use conditioner all over as your hair only needs extra conditioning on the ends.

Split Ends

Whatever a hair care product promises to do, it cannot mend split ends. Look after your hair, get regular trims and use conditioners as appropriate. This will help improve your hair's condition.

It is also important to never use a brush on wet hair as this can break the hair. Use a wide tooth comb and comb gently from roots to ends.

If you are using heated stylers use a protective product to minimise the damage such as a thermal hair protector. These will protect your hair from hot hair stylers, heated rollers, and straightening irons.

Allow your hair to dry naturally when possible. You could even consider a traditional method of styling your hair with non heated rollers and styles such as plaits and buns.

Flat Hair

Use shampoo, conditioners and styling products designed to add volume and body to your hair, and use a hairspray to prevent your hair style dropping.

Blow drying wet hair upside down will add volume. A product I have recently found is
the TIGI Bed Head Superstar Blow Dry Lotion. Smelling of oranges, the liquid feels amazing on your hair, a small amount goes a long way and adds volume and softness without stickiness. It is great for blow drying your hair and protecting it

When hair is partially dry turn upright to finish styling and concentrate on getting height at the roots with a barrel brush.

When it's cold out, there is nothing more comforting that wearing a warm hat. This though can give you the 'flat hair' look. Keep some styling spray or dry shampoo in your bag to refresh your look when needed and give that boost to your hair.

Dry Hair

Try not to over process hair in the Winter as this can make hair brittle and dryer than normal. Use a shampoo to add shine and gloss like the TIGI Catwalk Fashionista brunette shampoo.

If you hair is very dry, look for conditioning treatments with Argan oil, after all they have been using it in Morocco for centuries. A weekly deep conditioning mask can also help dry and brittle hair.

If you want to cheat and get that Hollywood red carpet look, spritz with shine spray for healthy glowing locks.

Frizzy Hair

Changes in the environment such as heat, cold, wind and rain can cause hair to go frizzy. To prevent this style your hair with a product that discourages moisture absorption. A waterproof hairspray like Techni Art Fix Anti Frizz Spray can keep hair in place and help prevent the frizz.

If you are prone to frizzy hair, don't brush it. Use your finger to apply product and style gently. A touch of conditioner on the ends of hair can help tame the frizz.
