Gousto Food Box Revisited

I have reviewed a number of food boxes on my blog and Gousto remains a firm favourite of mine. Gousto is a home delivered food box full of well balanced nutritious ingredients perfectly proportioned. The end result is a plate full of tasty delicious food.

Why I like Gousto:-

You have a variety of dishes to choose from on their website and meals are changed weekly.
Each food box comes with a recipe card, with easy step-by-step instructions.
All the measuring is done for you.
There is no waste.
Meals are nutritionally balanced but still tasty.
Vegetables are organic.
Meat is high welfare.
British products are chosen where ever possible.
It inspires you to try new recipes and stops your cooking getting in a rut.

I liked being able to choose my meals in advance, and for this box I chose Sticky Hoisin Pork, Cheaty Chicken Kieve and Meera's Chicken Curry. Everything is delivered in an insulated box to keep your food fresh.
The first dish I tried this week was the Sticky Hoisin Pork. We both found this dish very tasty and different to what we would normally cook. Although we do enjoy Chinese food I never make it from scratch so this was nice to try.

The recipe was easy to follow in all. One tip, after you add the pork to the frying pan, do not leave it unattended like I did - whoops! As it is in a marinade, it is easy to burn. I just managed to rescue it, luckily.
My husband is a very fussy eater, and I wasn't sure he would eat the pork as he doesn't as as rule but the flavour of the marinade was delicious and he ate it all up in no time. The wedges were tasty too and I would say don't worry about adding a whole chili to the cucumber relish. As long as you remove the seeds the dish won't be too hot. My only criticism of this dish is the fact that the pork used was neck of pork which was a little fatty. I would use fillet of pork if I was making this dish myself from scratch.

The next dish I made was the Cheaty Chicken Kiev. The chicken for this needs to be cut in half and then dipped in seasoned flour, egg and then breadcrumbs. A tip for you if you are breading chicken like this is to put a food bag over your hand to stop it getting messy when handling the chicken. I then put the chicken in the fridge to firm up. This was a good idea as the breadcrumbs set on the chicken making it easier to handle when cooked.

The accompaniment for the chicken was potato and broccoli mash. I have to admit I am not a fan of mash at all, as I don't like the smooth texture. What I did when making the mash was to roughly mash it with a fork so it had a rough texture. I seasoned it well with salt and pepper and added a knob of Flora buttery.

Served over the chicken is a garlic butter, which was easy to make. I peeled and then chopped the garlic roughly and used the side of a cook's knife to squash the garlic with a little salt. I then melted some Flora buttery (you can use butter) in the microwave and added the garlic to make a garlic butter.

We both felt this dish was like proper comfort food, really satisfying and tasty. I kept it slightly healthier by using Flora buttery instead of butter but this is up to you. I think this dish would appeal to children too, after all, I don't know any children that doesn't like breaded chicken and this is so much nicer than the chicken nuggets you can buy.

The last dish we tried was Meera's Chicken Curry. This is where Gousto comes into it's own. I would personally never buy spices myself to make a curry from scratch due to past experience where they just get left in the back of the cupboard, and lose the flavour with age. All the spices with Gousto were perfectly proportioned and weighed out in little packets - no waste here.

The chicken curry was really flavourful without being too hot. You could really pick out the spices such as the cinnamon, and coriander. The coconut milk added to the smooth luxurious flavour of the sauce and the portion size was just right. There is something ultimately satisfying about cooking a curry from scratch and I really enjoyed cooking this dish, and obviously eating it too!

All the dishes I tried were on the table in not much more than 45 minutes and they were suitable for those with little to moderate cooking experience. Portion sizes are generous too. With free nationwide delivery and farm fresh ingredients, get out of your cooking rut and try something new - home cooking made easy from Gousto.

You can follow Gousto on Twitter  and Facebook here and they also have a Pinterest account so you can see their tasty dishes. If you want to try a new box at £25 off your first order use the code RELISH at checkout.

Have you ever tried Gousto? What do you think of the concept? Let me know.

I have tried Slim Pasta before and cannot believe it is only 21 calories per 100g. Made from all natural Konjac flour and oat fibre, use this instead of normal pasta for a low calories meal. This is also gluten, fat and sugar free and suitable for vegetarian and vegans. Helps you lose weight in conjunction with a low calorie diet.

Sweet Baby Ray's Honey Barbecue Sauce £2.99

This barbecue sauce is rich and delicious and perfect for Hunters Chicken. You can use it as a marinade or on ribs or as a dip for wings and on top of burgers too. It tastes sweet with a lovely smokiness and it is very tasty.

Sarsons Balsamic Vinegar £2.00

This full bodied balsamic from Modena - where the best balsamic is made, is great for salad dressings. The Italians have balsamic with strawberries as they say it brings out the flavour of the fruit. Can't wait to try this for tea tonight.

Green Coco 80p

This drink is made from coconut juice with banana. Organic from selected plantations, this is an alternative to fizzy drinks for those of all ages.

Daelmans Stropwafels £2.00

I have tried waffles like these before and they are utterly scrumptious. It recommends that you warm them over your favourite hot beverage so that the caramel is melted like they do in the Netherlands. I popped them in the microwave for 20 seconds and ate them warm, just be careful not to heat them too long because of the hot caramel.

Fuel 10K £2.69

A wheat biscuit with added protein, great to keep you fuller for longer. High in fibre and low in sugar and salt, these make a super breakfast. They taste the same as a well known branded wheat biscuit too so no compromising on taste.

Nando's Peri-Peri chips RRP: 3 x 69p

Nando's Peri-Peri Spicy groove potato chips have generous grooves to contain all the flavour.  They give a spicy tasty hit and have a wonderful crunch. I loved the Spicy Chicken especially - a very moorish bag of chips. Recommended.

One of the 'new generation' IQ drinks, containing an amino acid call L-arginine. They say "Consumption of arginine-containing food leads to a better performance in physical exercises and sex, and also increases resistance to exhaustion and fatigue." It tastes sweet and fizzy and I like the fact it has no caffeine.

Scheckters £1.35

A fruity organic energy drink that is 100% natural. Packed full of healthy ingredients like organic elderberry juice, organic ginseng and pomegranate juice it tasted lovely and fruity. We liked this drink!

Wonjo Hibiscus Drink

This health drink is produced from the hibiscus plant and is rich in vitamin C, calcium and magnesium. It can be added to your diet to boost the level of antioxidants. Sweet in flavour this rich ruby drink has no additives or preservatives and is inspired by a traditional recipe from West Africa.
Perhaps an alternative to fizzy drinks for a lunchbox?

Veetee Rice 2 x £1.49

Veetee rice packs are useful to keep in the cupboard for when you want a nutritious addition to any meal. Heat in the microwave for only a couple of minutes these are great for adding to stir fries too. We ate the spicy Mexican rice with chilli and it was tasty and had a good spy flavour.

Cirios Tinned Tomatoes £1.69 & £1.20

I always keep tinned tomatoes in the cupboard, as they are easy and convenient to add to curries, pasta sauces, casseroles and stews and I also enjoy them on toast with grated cheese on top. This brand, famous in Italy, are known for quality and taste.

Degustabox For March

My food delivery of Degustabox is here again. The monthly food delivery box is perfect when you love trying new things as you get between 9-14 items every month, most new to the market and many utterly delicious.

So lets see what we have in the box this month.

A great selection this month!

Jordans Granola RRP: £3.69

I am a big fan of granola and this granola by Jordan's is a lighter granola, with 30% less fat than their normal version and high in fibre too. To be honest I wasn't looking forward to trying a healthier granola, but from the taste I couldn't tell it was lower in fat, so I would highly recommend it.

Kents Kitchen Posh Noodles RRP: £1.75

These noodles by Kents Kitchen are perfect for a tasty snack, or lunch on the go, being low in fat and calories. Made with all natural ingredients, just add hot water, stir and wait a few minutes for a hot and filling meal in no time.

Maynards Sour Patch Kids RRP: £1.00

All the family enjoyed these sweets and although they had a sour flavour they weren't eye watering, and were sweet under the coating. With six different flavours in the packet, they are a little treat when only something sweet (and sour) will do.

Lindt Lindor Assorted Mini Eggs RRP: £2.00 (each)

These mini eggs are a really delicious assortment of milk, white and dark chocolate. I adored the white chocolate the most, as it was really yummy and the centres were soft . They were inspired by a secret recipe, I wish I had access to the secret recipes Lindt!

Bassetts Jelly Babies Berry Mix RRP: £1.48

Who doesn't like jelly babies? As well as being a favourite of Dr Who they are a favourite of my husband too, so I didn't get a chance to try these! These packets are a yummy mix of blackcurrant, raspberry and strawberry and contain real fruit juice and natural colours. They also say they are made for sharing....did you hear that Marcus?

Natvia RRP: £2.00

This 100 per cent naturally sourced alternative to artificial sweetener and sugar has zero calories per serving, is non genetically modified and has a low GI. I used it in my tea ( 1 teaspoon equals 1 teaspoon of sugar) and I thought it was an excellent substitute to sugar.

Brioche Pasquier Baked Bread Bites RRP: £0.50 (each)

Marketed as a new alternative to potato crisps, each packet, made from real French bread has under 90 calories and is low in saturated fat compared to crisps, free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.  We really enjoyed the bacon flavour snack in this household and the price is great too. It will be interesting to try other flavours so I will look out for these when I am in the shops next.

BBQUE RRP: £3.99

BBQUE is the original Bavarian barbecue sauce, made with cranberries, beer, honey and apples.  This sauce is not yet available in the UK so be one of the first to try it here. I am looking forward to using this with a recipe for Hunters Chicken, as it sounds authentic and a step up from the usual barbecue sauce.

JuiceBurst RRP: £1.25 (each)

I already like the cranberry Juice Burst, so was delighted to have this in my box. Sharp, but not not too sharp the cranberry drink is refreshing and flavourful. I have yet to try the skinny Juice Burst but if it tastes like it sounds - "bursting to the brim with fruit goodness",  it will be as delicious as the normal JuiceBurst.

Crabbie's Alcoholic Fruits RRP: £1.50 (each)

Voted Product Of The Year, this alcoholic drink is packed with fruity flavours. Made with no artificial colours or flavourings I can't wait to try these drinks, and even the flavours sound enticing Black Cherry, Zesty Lemon, and Raspberry and Rhubarb. I think the price is good too.

Degustabox For February

This month's Degustabox was a great box. I have to admit the healthy box from January didn't do much for me, I want cake and chocolate! So this month, I was very excited when we had cake and chocolate...

If you are not aware of the concept of Degustabox, this is a monthly food delivery service. Each month you get a random selection of food and drink, mostly new products and ones yet to establish themselves in the food and drink market.

Every box is great value, with 9-14 products, each box costing only £12.99 with delivery but the value being much more than this.

This month we had: -
Melba Thins £1.39

These thin crispbreads are nice to snack on with a variety of toppings, some cream cheese perhaps or hummus. You get 10 packs in a box too, each pack contains 6 thins so that is useful for calorie counting.

Schwartz Flavour Shots £1.40 (for two)

Schwartz Flavour Shots are often included in the food box and this month is no exception. A concentrated little pot of flavour, these are great for keeping in your cupboard and for adding an authentic taste to your cooking. The Indian Mild Marsala curry was really delicious.

Laimon Fresh £1.99

This is a 100% natural drink as it says on the label. My son tried this and found the combination of mint and lemon interesting. I think it is a little more than I would pay normally for a drink like this. An alternative to sparkling water or lemonade.

Whole Earth Three Nut Butter £3.00

My husband loves peanut butter, and this nut butter which is a mix of cashews, peanuts and hazelnuts is a tasty alternative and high in protein. Made with the finest natural ingredients Whole Earth Three Nut Butter is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Peanut Hottie £3.00

This looks like tea with milk when made with hot water, but has the taste of peanuts. An alternative to hot chocolate and also caffeine free this is a warming drink, that is a bit different. They also make a peanut butter and chocolate drink which sounds delightful!

Lily O'Brien's Cocoa Cookie Crunch £2.60

I found these chocolate and cookie pieces quite sweet but good if you want something small and chocolately (if you can resist eating the packet). Also this would make a great pack for sharing in the cinema or watching your favourite TV programmes, and the fact that the pack is resealable is very useful.

American Muffin Company £2.50

The chocolate brownie bites I were sent were very scrummy. Each little packet is individually wrapped too, keeping them fresh. When you want a little treat but are keeping your eye on the calories I would seriously recommend these. Very chocolately and very moorish.

Beet It £1.85 (for two)

These beetroot and oat flapjacks were tasty, the colour was a bit unusual being bright purple, however don't let that put you off. It is recommended to consume a bar 30 mins to 12 hours before exercise. They are marketed as a perfect pre-workout snack containing natural dietary nitrate, this converts to Nitric Oxide which responds to the demands of the body, leading to a boost of stamina, increased blood flow and speedy recovery.

Jack Link's Beef Snack £1.39

I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy this, but it was really tasty. It is not dried like beef jerky but it is a beef snack that has some similarities. A snack that is very flavourful and I think this would especially appeal to men especially those on a high protein diet and the carnivores out there.

Degustabox January

This month's box Degustabox is themed around healthy eating. This monthly box scheme always guarantees a selection of new and established products and you never know what you are going to get. A perfect surprise for the foodies out there. I am lucky to be sent a box for free every month and this is what I think of January's box.

Alfa One Rice Oil £2.00
The Alfa One Rice Bran Oil is high in antioxidants and is nutritionally well balanced. It is high is Gamma Oryzanol which has been shown to reduce the absorption of cholesterol, and is naturally occurring too. It has no cholesterol at all and is a very versatile oil for cooking.

Haywards Piccalilli £1.89
Piccalilli can divide a room, those that like it and those that do not like it. Unfortunately I am in the last group so I gave it to my father -in-law who loves the stuff. Perfect to have with meat and cheese and a selection of bread for a light lunch. A tangy mustardy pickle.

Finn Crisp Crispbread £1.20
Crispbreads can make a great alternative to bread. I did find these crispbreads a little dry on their own but I bet they would be so much nicer topped with cream cheese and sun dried tomatoes. A healthy choice made from wholegrains and rich in fibre and antioxidants.

Mornflake Top Porridge Oats £1.19 each
These pots are a great breakfast on the go, just add boiling water. What is interesting about the porridge pots is that they have a portion of Golden Syrup or Nutella included so you can add to taste. Oats are heart healthy and porridge makes a great filling breakfast so I would definitely buy these again. My son loved the Nutella porridge especially.

Kabuto Noodles £2.00
I loved these tasty noodles so much. Just add boiling water, stir and cover for three minutes, stir again and wait for a minute and they are ready to eat. Lots of authentic Asian ingredients such as ginger, chilli and coriander pack a flavour punch you can't ignore. Delicious.

Koyo Dairy Free £1.39
Koko Dairy Free Original is an alternative to cows milk made by pressed coconut milk. It has a slightly sharper taste than Soya milk but no overt coconut taste and in my opinion was perfect in tea and coffee. Often Soya milk can curdle in hot drinks but Koyo diary free doesn't so that was a plus point in my opinion. A great substitute if you are avoiding dairy.

Little Miracles £1.49 each
These non-carbonated drinks which are a blend of organic tea, juice and ginseng are sweetened with Agave and each bottle is less than 90 calories. With no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners they make a good substitute to fizzy drinks and are super when you need a pick-me-up.

Sukrin Cake Mix £4.50
This cake mix by Sukrin is gluten and sugar free. T
he mix contains sesame flour and Fibrefine instead of wheat flour and it has 80% less carbohydrates than the average cake. I am looking forward to making a cake with this cake mix this week and hope it is as tasty as it looks. A great idea for those watching their weight.

In the box this month you either get Magners Light or Simplee Aloe, depending if you box is with alcohol or without.

Magners Light £1.00

This popular brand have now produced a lower calorie version of their cider. This fresh and fruity cider would be great served over ice on a Summer's Day. If you are watching your weight and like alcopops then I would recommend this.

Simplee Aloe £1.79
Simplee Aloe is an all natural drink Aloe Vera drink. This drink blended with grape juice has a fresh taste. They say Aloe Vera is a miracle substance and is great for those with stomach problems, soothing and healing. Perfect to pop into your lunch box or to take along to the gym. It also comes in a litre size to share with the family. Available from selected Sainsburys and Waitrose stores.

We also got a free gift in the box this month:-

Clipper Green Tea
Green tea is full of antioxidants and is great for you, and a brilliant substitute for a caffeine based hot drink. To be honest I am not a fan of green tea, yet I wish I was. My mother-in-law loves green tea and actually buys this make so she was very grateful when I gave these to her.

Some things were definite hits this month. I loved the porridge especially and the Kabuto noodles were really delicious. This box was aimed at a more niche market than usual, due to the time of the year it had a healthy eating slant. If you are adventurous and like trying new foods it is a good idea and it would also make a lovely gift

Gousto Food Box Review

A little while ago I reviewed Gousto food boxes. Gousto food boxes are a home delivered food box full of organic food. The unique selling point is that each box contains carefully measured ingredients in the right proportions to cook the delicious recipes on the cards they supply. There's no waste here. You get to choose the food online and each week the selection is updated. The boxes are delivered right to your doorstep each week.

Inside a Gousto box

What I love is that that the recipes are: -
Easy to make, they don't need any complicated cooking skills, you won't have to stuff a mushroom here.
Quick to make, all have preparation and cooking time clearly stated and most if not all are rustled up in well under an hour.
Most ingredients are locally sourced, wherever possible.
All meat carries the Red Tractor stamp of assurance to guarantee animals are reared in Britain in accordance to animal welfare guidelines.
Fruit, vegetables and herbs are from certified organic suppliers.
All the herbs and spices are carefully measured too, so no having to buy a whole packet of paprika or chili flakes when you are not sure when you will use it again.
Meals are nutritionally balanced and healthy whilst still being filling.
Oh and each dish is incredibly tasty!

I was sent a box of food to review as Gousto have recently revamped their website, making it mobile phone friendly and lowered their prices whilst still maintaining the great quality of their food.

The recipe cards are simple to follow and give nutritional advice such as calories, fat and protein per portion, prep time, how many of your five a day contribution as well as cooking time.

Pork and Sesame Meatballs recipe card

The finished result

Fennel crusted pork tenderloin before

The finished result

The dishes I tried out were tasty, easy to cook and filling. I was worried there wasn't going to be enough food but there was plenty.

When I cooked the meatballs I was concerned one chili would be too hot so I added less. I shouldn't have done as I think the meatballs weren't spicy enough, although they were very flavourful. I should have had courage in the recipes! I particularly liked the way the broccoli was cooked, roasting in the oven in a little olive oil added a lovely caramelisation to this often boring vegetable.

Another dish I tried was the fennel encrusted pork. This was easy to prepare and I really enjoyed the butter bean, tomato and garlic dish. Being not a great fan of fennel I was apprehensive about cooking the pork as it had a fennel crust. It did have a distinctive flavour but it made a meat that can often be bland full of flavour.

I also tried the sumac chicken and courgette ribbon salad. Unfortunately my photos did not come out so well for this one so I do not have photos to show you. It was quick to make but we didn't rate this one as good as the other dishes, mainly because we didn't really enjoy the flavour of the sumac, which is a middle eastern spice, and it was served with millet which is not our favourite grain. But that's the joy of these food boxes, it allows you to try new things but also if you don't like something you don't have to order it again.

I have a special offer today for my readers get £25 off your first box. Yes £25!

Enter code JEWELLERY25 at checkout to take advantage of this very special offer.

You can follow Gousto on Twitter  and Facebook here and they also have a Pinterest account so you can see their yummy dishes.

Have you ever tried Gousto? What do you think of the concept? Let me know.

Degustabox For August

This month's Degustabox was an eclectic mix of new foodstuffs as always. Degustabox - the monthly box scheme, always guarantees to provide value for money, with 9 to 14 surprise products every month.

This is what I received this month.

Mexican Dave's Lightly Salted Tortilla Chips - We are a big fan of tortilla chips as a family. Great for snacking on, these lightly salted tortilla chips have a light toasted flavour without any strong flavours, which is perfect for serving with salsa, guacamole and sour cream. I used them as an accompaniment to my slow cooker Campfire Stew.

Berry White Goji Berries with Peaches, White Tea and Echinacea Organic Drink - This fruity drink with slightly unusual ingredients is light and fruity and refreshing. It has no added sugar and 10% of their profits go to charity. Added to this that the drink is Organic made with superfruits and healthy extracts and you are onto a winner. Available from Waitrose and Ocado.

Caribbean Twist Strawberry Daiquiri Cocktail - This delicious fruity cocktail reminded me of sunny days by the beach. For lovers of sweet and fruity drinks, serve chilled on ice with a couple of sliced strawberries and some mint for an authentic cocktail experience. Available from Asda, Tescos, Sainburys and all good supermarkets.

Fever Tree Ginger Beer and Tonic Water - The ginger beer was a pleasant drink, with a touch of heat. I don't really drink tonic water, so I didn't know what to expect. The slightly bitter taste was balanced with a touch of sweetness, it would be the perfect choice for gin lovers everywhere.

Lindt Hello Chocolate Hearts - These sweet little chocolates were creamy and delightful. My son and I were hugely impressed! The tin is really cute too so a great gift as a token of love or just a little treat for yourself.

Cawston Press Apple & Pear Kids Blend - This drink was really lovely, not too sweet at all. It is made with pressed juice and a blend of water with no added sugar or anything artificial. A great drink for your kid's lunchbox or even your other half!

Brioche Pasquier Croissants and Pains Au Lait - We all really enjoyed these products. The chocolate croissants were fabulous when warmed up, the oozing chocolate made these incredibly delicious. Individually wrapped these kept for ages too. The pains au lait were like a sweet bread. I ate these with a little butter and jam. Again a tasty product, they made a perfect treat at breakfast time and are a super store cupboard staple.

Dr Oetker Edible Wafer Cupcake Cases - What a great idea! I am certainly going to make up some cupcakes on the weekend to try these edible cupcake cases. A brilliant idea for kids parties too I think you will agree.

Schwartz Flavour Shots Mexican Fajitas and Spanish Smoked Paprika Chicken - These little taste sensations add delicious flavours to your dishes and are brilliant to jazz up your food when you don't know what to cook. The mixes contain oil, herbs and spices and pack a flavourful punch. Perfect to have in your cupboard to spice up chicken dishes, dinner will never be boring again.

As an added bonus Degustabox are trying out a new scheme called "Degustabox fridge" which will include a voucher in each new box for a chiller or freezer item. In this box they have included a voucher for a MOMA bircher muesli pot to be redeemed in Waitrose or Sainsburys. I don't have either in my small town but will pick it up when I go to Bridgend next week. The MOMA muesli pot is a mix of muesli and yogurt so it definitely appeals to me and I look forward to trying it soon.
