A Simple Guide for First-Time Cruisers

Your first cruise is certainly an adventure, but it can also be overwhelming. From choosing the ideal ship to dressing the part, first-time cruisers often have dozens of questions. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to cruise like a pro from day one.

Why Cruising Is A Great Type Of Vacation

Sun Princess

Cruises provide the ideal combination of ease, excitement, and relaxation. Here are some reasons why cruising is great.
  • All-in-one vacation: With cruising, you have all your accommodation, dining, and entertainment on one ship. It can be a great all-inclusive type of holiday.
  • Visit several ports: On a cruise, you can see multiple destinations and visit them without committing to a longer holiday. If you like the destination, you can always go back!
  • Something for everyone: Cruising has something for everyone. From sunbathing and snorkelling to fine dining and family activities, cruises have something for every interest.
  • An affordable vacation. Cruising can be very affordable when you consider that most cruises have food, some drinks and entertainment all included.

1. Choosing The Right Cruise Line

Not all cruise lines are created equal. Some appeal to families, others to adventure travellers or luxury cruisers. Here's the quick summary:

  • Royal Caribbean: Good for families and first-timers who want activity and entertainment.
  • Carnival: Cost-effective, party-cruiser, good for younger or budget-strapped travellers.
  • Norwegian: Known for "freestyle cruising" with independent dining choices at mealtime and an easy-going atmosphere.
  • Disney Cruise Line: Best for young children and families.
  • Celebrity and Holland America: Better for couples or older travellers who desire relaxation and enrichment.
  • P & O Cruises: UK based and good value for money. Great for families.

Pro Tip: Read reviews on blog sites such as Fly Drive Explore and YouTube vlogs like Fly Drive Explore. You can then really get a sense of the atmosphere for each cruise line.

I've written a more comprehensive essential tips for first time cruises, so check it out.

2. Shortest And Most Popular Itineraries For First-Time Cruisers

Make it short and sweet with popular routes so you can wet your feet (pun intended):

  • Caribbean Cruises: Nice weather, beautiful beaches, and plenty of excursions.
  • Bahamas Cruises: Great weekend getaways, with most departing from Florida.
  • Mediterranean Cruises: For a European taste with amazing cultural port stops.
  • Alaska Cruises: Nature lovers will love stunning scenery and wildlife viewing.
  • European Cruises: Great for culture lovers.

3. What To Pack On Your First Cruise

Packing for a cruise is different from a land vacation. The following are essentials first-time cruisers shouldn't leave home without:

  • Passport and documents
  • Cruise lanyard (to carry your keycard)
  • Motion sickness remedies (Anti-sickness wristbands, Kwells or Dramamine)
  • Formal evening wear (check your cruise line's dress code)
  • Swimwear and beach cover-ups
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Power strip (not surge-protected)
  • Light backpack for shore days

Tip Bonus: Don't pack your swimsuit in the back of your suitcase — you might need to wear it on Day 1 before your luggage is in your room.

4. What To Expect Onboard

pool on ship

New cruisers, cruise ships can be like floating cities. Here is a brief overview of what to expect:

  • Muster Drill: Mandatory pre-sail safety briefing.
  • Daily Schedule: Print or app copy of activities onboard.
  • Dining Options: Main dining room (free), speciality restaurants (fee), and buffets.
  • Gratuities: Added automatically to your onboard account or may be included in some cruise lines.
  • Wi-Fi: Not typically free

5. Shore Excursions: Do It Yourself vs. Booking With The Cruise Line

  • Ship-Booked Excursions: Convenient and safer, especially for first-timers.
  • DIY: More fun and sometimes cheaper, but more organisation is required.
  • Cruise Smart: Get back onboard at least an hour before sail-away. The ship won't wait for you.

6. Common Mistakes First Time Cruisers Need To Avoid

  • Not arriving a day early: Always arrive the night before to avoid delays.
  • Forget about travel insurance. Always get specific cruise cover, especially if cruising internationally. It can cost a lot to evacuate you in a medical emergency if you are in the middle of the ocean,
  • Not budgeting for extras: Drinks, tours, tips, and internet use can quickly mount up.
  • Not reading the documentation and examining the website of the cruise line. It's important to do this so you know what's included and what's not in your cruise fare.

Final Tips for First Time Cruisers

Your first cruise is all about unwinding and exploring, not stressing over the details. By thinking ahead a bit, asking the right questions, and having realistic expectations, you'll set sail with confidence and return with memories to last a lifetime.

Why It's So Special

Antarctica is the most remote and unspoiled area in the world, with spectacular landscapes of icebergs, glaciers, and endless snow fields. Animal lovers can also see thousands of penguins, flying whales, and seals in their natural habitats.

Expedition cruises to Antarctica aren’t your typical vacation. You’ll explore the White Continent on small, specialised ships with ice-strengthened hulls and embark on thrilling zodiac excursions to walk among penguins and visit research stations. Some cruises even offer kayaking and polar plunges for the truly adventurous!

Best Time to Go
November to March (Antarctic summer) when the ice melts enough for ships to navigate

Silversea Expeditions, Quark Expeditions, Hurtigruten

2. Galápagos Islands Adventure Cruise – A Wildlife Lover's Dream

Why It's So Special

Few places on earth can rival the Galápagos Islands for unusual wildlife encounters and experiences.  Because of its remoteness and lack of natural predators, the Galápagos has fearless creatures which you can see up close including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions, and the notorious blue-footed boobies.

On a Galápagos cruise, you can also take the opportunity to go on guided hikes and snorkelling experiences and see unusual animals and sea life.  You can also learn from expert naturalists about Charles Darwin's groundbreaking work on evolution. Due to the environment,  Galápagos cruises tend to be small intimate affairs often no larger than 100 passengers. This allows for an immersive and personalised experience you won't get on the mega cruise ships, ensuring a memorable cruise.

Best Time to Go
Any time of the year, but December through May offers more peaceful seas and warmer water for snorkelling.

Top Cruise Lines
Lindblad Expeditions, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea

3. Norwegian Fjords Cruise – A Fairytale Journey

Fjords

Why It's So Special

Sailing through the Norweigan Fjords is like entering a childhood fairytale.  You will be amazed at the beautiful waterfalls cascading down green mountains, and the snow-capped peaks at different times of the year.  Getting to the Norweigan Fjords is also easy year-round if you are sailing from the UK, as many cruise lines visit the area. The scenery is also nothing less than magical, with a new stunning view around every corner.

In addition to the natural beauty of the Fjords, cruise ships allow you to easily stop at small Nordic villages where you can become familiar with the Viking culture, taste the local seafood, and hike on remote trails. Based on the timing of your trip, you may even witness the breathtaking Northern Lights or the perennial daylight of the Midnight Sun.

Best Time to Go
May to September for fjord cruises in summer; October to March for Northern Lights

Top Cruise Lines
Viking, Hurtigruten, Norwegian Cruise Line

4. Asia Cultural & Island-Hopping Cruise – A Blend of Tradition and Modern

Why It's So Special

Asia is a vast and multicultural continent and cruising can give you a taste of one of the best ways to experience its rich heritage, colourful cultures, and breathtaking landscapes all in one trip.

Visit during Japan's cherry blossom season for a bucket list experience.  Or why not go to Vietnam's stunning Ha Long Bay featured in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies?  Of course, Thailand's many islands offer a tropical climate as well as the chance to visit Buddhist temples and taste the flavourful Thai cuisine. Discover vibrant cities like Hong Kong and Singapore on an Asia cruise, sample food of international reputation, or simply bask on some of the most stunning beaches in the world, yet all within one itinerary.

Many cruises in Asia also include unique experiences, such as traditional tea ceremonies in Japan, cooking classes in Thailand, or visits to ancient temples in Cambodia.

October to April for Southeast Asia; March to May for Japan’s cherry blossoms

A cruise in the South Pacific enables you to see multiple stunning islands without the inconvenience of plane island-hopping. Snorkel among manta rays, view historic Polynesian villages, hike to hidden waterfalls, or simply lounge around on silky white sand beaches.

The laid-back culture of the region, and its otherworldly beauty, make it an extremely romantic and revitalising destination to cruise.

9 Reasons to Go On A Cruise In 2023

Cruising is becoming more popular than ever. Although traditionally thought of as a holiday for retired people, cruise lines have recently adapted and become more exciting than ever, now appealing to a broader range of people, including younger couples and families. There are so many reasons to go on a cruise.

cruise ships
So you are browsing cruise holidays 2023, and can't decide if a cruise is right for you, let us look at 9 reasons to go on a cruise in 2023.

1. An opportunity to visit many destinations

Cruising is perfect for you if you have a real wanderlust as you can visit multiple destinations on one trip. As you travel all your luggage is transported with you and you don't have to pack and unpack each time you get to your next destination, saving you time and stress. Visiting many destinations gives you the chance to experience different cultures and see many ports of call. If you don't like flying a cruise is a great way to see the world too.

2. An all-inclusive experience

Cruises generally include your food, and your entertainment as well as your accommodation. Some even include your alcoholic beverages and excursions (although these can be purchased separately). This makes it easy to budget, just bring some spending money for your trips out. It can be great value for money if you think of what you get.

3. A wealth of activities onboard

Although there are two main types of cruises, ocean cruises and river cruises, there are a wealth of activities on each type. On the larger ships, there are swimming pools, casinos, theatres and more, whilst, on river cruises, activities are more low-key but can still include smaller swimming pools, hot tubs and cultural activities such as cookery classes.

4. An opportunity to relax

You can do as much or as little as you want on a cruise ship and cruises give you plenty of opportunities to relax if you want to. You don't have to drive anywhere, you have all your food cooked for you, and you can partake of the pools and spas on board or just sit and relax sipping cocktails and watching the world go by. If you want you can even disconnect from modern technology for the ultimate relaxation experience.

5. Something to do for all ages

Cruising has evolved over the last few years and now there are cruises to suit all ages. Some cruises are aimed more at families with everything from go-karting to arcades to karaoke whilst others are adult-only with high-end dining, cultural excursions and cocktail master classes. Of course, some cruises combine the best of both, so think about what you want before booking the cruise ship and itinerary to ensure it meets your needs.

6. Great for foodies

A cruise can be a great experience for foodies. On large cruise ships, there is a wealth of variety from casual dining opportunities to buffets to speciality restaurants and fine dining. If you have dietary requirements you are usually catered for very well. On the smaller cruise ships, the food is usually to a high standard. There may also be opportunities to meet celebrity chefs and to partake in cookery classes. Check the details of the cruise before you book.

7. A chance to meet new people

A cruise gives you a chance to meet new people. You may be sharing a table with others or you may go on an excursion with a group of people or you may take part in a group activity onboard where you get the chance to talk to others. You have plenty of opportunities to meet new people from all over the world on a cruise if you want to.

8. Enjoy a wide variety of fitness facilities.

Cruise ships can offer everything from exercise classes such as Zumba and yoga to full gyms, swimming pools, running tracks, tennis courts and dance classes. On excursions, you could have the opportunity to go hiking or cycling and maybe partake in watersports. Of course, it depends on the cruise ship you choose and what is on offer but there is a surprising variety of fitness facilities available.

9. Create those special memories

A cruise is a place to create special memories with your loved ones. With work, school and family ties, you may not be able to sit down and really chat with your loved ones, but a cruise gives you that perfect opportunity.

So with all these reasons to go on a cruise, what's stopping you from going on a cruise today? Check out my post if you are new to cruising on 100 tips for a first time cruiser

Winter Escapes: Seasonal Cruise Deals from Southampton

This summer has been so disappointing for the weather so there is no better time to plan an escape to warmer climates. And what better way to do so than with a luxurious cruise departing from the historic port of Southampton? Embark on a journey of relaxation and adventure as you sail through crystal-clear waters, basking in the sun and exploring exotic destinations. From the Canary Islands' beauty to the Mediterranean's cultural richness, there is a winter cruise deal from Southampton waiting to whisk you away to paradise.

Discovering the Best Winter Destinations

Arvia

When the chill of winter takes hold, the allure of sun-drenched destinations becomes irresistible. Southampton cruises during winter often head towards the balmy Canary Islands, where the weather remains warm and inviting. The islands offer a unique blend of Spanish culture, volcanic landscapes, and lush forests, making them perfect for those looking to swap frost for sunshine.

Another favourite winter escape is the Caribbean, accessible via transatlantic journeys that begin in Southampton. These cruises are ideal for travellers eager to indulge in the Caribbean islands' crystal-clear waters and vibrant cultures. From the colourful streets of Barbados to the pristine beaches of St. Lucia, each island presents a paradise that defies the dreariness of winter.

For those with a love for adventure and warmer climates, cruises heading to the Mediterranean unveil a tapestry of history, cuisine, and scenic beauty. The Mediterranean winters are mild and less crowded, allowing travellers to explore the ancient ruins in Rome, the artistic treasures of Florence, and the bustling markets of Istanbul in peace.

Some cruises venture to the far reaches of the Middle East, offering an escape to the luxurious cityscapes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Here, winter travellers can bask in the futuristic architecture and expansive shopping complexes, all while enjoying daytime temperatures that are pleasantly warm rather than overwhelming in the winter. Each of these destinations, accessible from cruises Southampton, provides a winter retreat that promises both warmth and wonder.

Benefits of Winter Cruising

Winter cruising offers many advantages, particularly for those seeking a tranquil vacation away from the bustling crowds of peak travel seasons. As ships sail from Southampton in the colder months, passengers can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere onboard. This is coupled with the personal attention of crew members, who can provide a more tailored service due to fewer guests.

Cost-effectiveness is another significant benefit of embarking on a cruise during winter. With fewer travellers opting to cruise these months, prices tend to be considerably lower. This affordability extends to onboard amenities and excursions, allowing travellers to indulge more without stretching their budgets. Additionally, cruise lines often offer enticing incentives such as cabin upgrades, onboard credit, or complimentary packages to attract winter cruisers.

The winter season also brings unique itineraries that are not available during the summer months. For example, cruises from Southampton can take you to the enchanting Christmas markets along the Rhine or the serene beauty of the Norwegian fjords under the Northern Lights. These seasonal routes offer experiences distinct from the standard cruise itineraries, adding a special allure to winter voyages.

Sailing in winter allows passengers to enjoy the festive decorations and special events that cruise ships offer during the holiday season. From themed dinners to special shows, cruises are designed to enhance the festive spirit during this time of year. Whether celebrating with family or seeking a cosy getaway, winter cruises provide a memorable setting for enjoying the colder months in style and comfort.

What to Pack for a Winter Cruise

Barbados

Given the cooler weather, essential items include layered clothing such as thermal wear, sweaters, and a durable, water-resistant coat. These layers allow for adjustments based on daily temperature fluctuations in Southampton or exploring chilly European ports. If you are heading to a sunny destination, don't forget the shorts and swimwear though!

Footwear is equally essential; comfortable, non-slip boots are necessary for excursions in potentially icy or snowy conditions. Packaging warm socks, a hat, gloves, and a scarf will keep you cosy during outdoor activities. These accessories provide warmth and add a stylish touch to your winter outfits.

Remember to include evening wear for those planning to partake in formal dining or special events onboard. Cruises often feature gala nights where dress codes are stricter. For these occasions, an elegant suit or dress, complemented by warm formal coats or shawls, ensures both style and comfort against the brisk sea air.

Consider your health and wellness essentials, including moisturisers and lip balms to combat dry, cold air and any necessary medications. A good-quality sunscreen should also be considered, as UV exposure can be significant even in winter, especially when reflecting off snow or water. Of course, if you are heading to the Canary Islands or the Caribbean suncream is essential!

Navigating Winter Weather Conditions

Understanding how to navigate variable winter weather conditions is essential for a pleasant experience when setting sail on a winter cruise from Southampton. Preparation is key, starting with checking the weather forecasts regularly as your departure date approaches as weather conditions may change.

Onboard, it’s vital to stay informed about daily weather updates provided by the ship's crew. These updates can significantly influence your day-to-day activities, helping you decide whether to enjoy indoor entertainment or warm up for refreshing sea air on deck. The crew's expertise in navigating diverse weather conditions ensures your safety and comfort, allowing you to relax and enjoy the journey without worry.

For those days when the weather turns particularly harsh, make the most of the ship's amenities. Most modern cruise ships are well equipped with indoor pools, spas, libraries, and various entertainment options, making staying indoors just as exciting as exploring the deck

In conclusion, always dress in layers while on a winter cruise. Layering allows you to adjust your comfort level as temperatures change throughout the day or between indoor and outdoor environments. Essentials include thermal undergarments, a fleece or wool mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer to protect against wind and rain. If you are cruising to the Caribbean or sunny destinations, don't forget the sunglasses, suncream, shorts and sunhat. Enjoy!

The Rise of Casino Entertainment on Modern Cruises

Onboard today's cruise liners, the rocking of the sea, the taste of the air, and the jingle-jangle of slot machines combine into an exciting blend. The simple card games from the old days now have competition from massive casinos on the water. These spots are just as impressive as the big-time casinos on land. This change has turned cruising into something far more appealing for a significant number of travellers worldwide.

The Evolution of Shipboard Gaming

casino cruise ship

Historical Development

Back in the beginning, if you wanted to gamble on a cruise, you had just a tiny poker space and some old-school games to play. Now, it's a whole different ballgame. Modern cruise ships now feature sophisticated casinos with all the newest games and tech. They make sure it still feels like you're at sea, though.

Some folks might prefer sticking to the online casino experience in their rooms, but there's something about those buzzing casino floors that keep people coming for the real-deal ocean gaming vibe.

Casino Operations and Design

Design and Atmosphere

Cruise ship casinos are pros at mixing up fancy vibes with being easy to get into. They're different from casinos on land because they've got to make the most of a smaller space but still keep it looking classy.

The designers are strategic in their use of lighting, mirrors, and thoughtful design elements. This trickery makes everything seem roomy and draws you into a casino-like space reminiscent of iconic destinations such as Monte Carlo, complete with sparkly chandeliers, soft carpets, and decorations that fit the theme.

Gaming Options

When it comes to games, cruise ship casinos are stacked with fun stuff to do. They've got the old-school games like blackjack and roulette, but also the newest video games and slot machines that keep increasing progressively until a significant jackpot is won. Tournaments are the new hot thing on many ships offering a way for people to compete all trip long and hang out with new friends.

The Guest Experience

Social Aspects

Cruise ship gambling stands out because it's all about people hanging out together. It's different from regular casinos, where you might be playing alone for ages. On a cruise, folks tend to team up, celebrate their victories or lament their losses, and they end up making friends that stick around.

The Business of Cruise Gaming

casino cruise

Economic Impact

For cruise lines, casinos aren't just fun and games; they're a cash cow. They pull in a big chunk of the money that passengers spend while they're sailing. Because they're making bank cruise companies keep pouring cash into their gambling spots.

They want to stay ahead of the game, so they're always bringing in the latest and most advanced slot machines and gaming options to keep players coming back for more.

Regulatory Compliance

Running casinos while cruising demands quite a knack for legal stuff. Boats have to steer through a maze of global laws and rules that change based on where they float. Most cruise ships kick off their casino shindigs when they hit international waters, getting the hang of different locals.

They have developed innovative strategies for operating their casinos, like techy gizmos that flip switches on or off for gambling features, making sure everything's on the up and up depending on their GPS spot

Technology Integration

Today's cruise ships use tech to make casino games better. They use chips with RFID to watch how folks play and player card systems to handle rewards for the whole fleet. Passengers can even use apps on their phones to see how they're doing in tournaments or peek at their casino cash from anywhere on the ship.

Future Outlook

Environmental Considerations

Cruise lines nowadays have to think about being kind to the Earth while they run their casinos. They've got gaming machines that don't use a lot of power, and the air systems work great but don't suck up too much juice. This shows they care about doing things in a way that doesn't hurt the planet.

In Closing

Cruise ship casinos have come a long way, showing how the gaming and travel scenes are changing big time. They've gone from simple beginnings to fancy spots for fun that add to the cruise without taking over. With all the new tech and what people like, these casinos keep bringing fresh stuff while keeping that classic charm of playing games on the high seas.

Why You Should Cruise The Caribbean

Have you ever thought of cruising the Caribbean? It's been something my husband and I have been looking into recently. As there are so many places to see and reasons to go on a Caribbean cruise, we have decided to take the plunge and book. Caribbean cruises have a lot to offer everyone, so this post is about why you should cruise the Caribbean and the advantages of going on a Caribbean cruise.

You get to visit some great destinations

Grenada

Going on a Caribbean cruise is a great way of seeing several destinations on one trip. Sure it's not an in-depth introduction to the many different islands you can visit but it is a great taster.  You can find out which Caribbean islands you may want to explore more without committing to a specific island trip. Although there may be similarities with some of the islands, there are also lots of differences in culture,  food and landscape too as each country is beautiful and unique. For example, Grenada is a very green Caribbean island whilst Aruba is arid and dry.

It's a relaxing way to travel

pool on ship
Cruising is a relaxing way to travel. You don't have the stress of flying between ports and the limited luggage you can take. Cruises generally have a generous luggage allowance  You don't have the stress of choosing from hundreds of places to eat every night but you have a lot of choices to fit most diets from buffets to A La Carte restaurants onboard. You have amazing amenities that can help you relax too on the ship, like hot tubs, swimming pools and spas. You have entertainment onboard that will keep you entertained. Many have kids clubs too so you can relax without worrying about the kids.

It has some amazing landscapes

Jamaica
You get to see some of the amazing landscapes and variety of flora and fauna when you cruise the Caribbean. As mentioned before each island is different and unique. Islands like Grenada and Dominica are very green but of course, they do get rain, whilst islands like Aruba and Bonaire are less green but get less rain, perfect for all year sun.  Hikers and nature lovers will enjoy St Lucia with the Pitons mountains, and the Vermont Nature Trail in St Vincent.  Whilst Guadaloupe and Jamacia are known for their waterfalls. These Caribbean islands do have one thing in common though - the stunning sunrises and sunsets.

You have some exciting shore excursions

snorkelling
On a Caribbean cruise, you have some exciting shore excursions. You can go trekking in the rainforest in the Dominican Republic, you can snorkel with stingrays in Grand Cayman, you can go parasailing in CocoCay in the Bahamas, and you can go on one of the longest ziplines in the world in Belize. If you prefer a slower pace of life you can also explore the local culture and go on a food or distillery tour where you try the local food and drink. I mean who can resist Jamaican rum?

It's surprisingly cost-effective

cocktails

Going on a Caribbean cruise is surprisingly cost-effective. When you compare how much it would be to visit each destination then a Caribbean cruise can be a real bargain. This is often because of the inclusive nature of most cruises. You usually get all your food included, some, if not all drinks including cocktails, entertainment and tips. You don't need to pay for a hotel every night as your ship is your hotel, you don't need to pay for transportation to different airports or a rental car.  When you add up how much it would cost you to stay on each island and the associated costs you realise a Caribbean cruise can be surprisingly cost-effective.

As you can see Caribbean cruises are amazing fun. Let me know, have you been on a Caribbean cruise? Which are your favourite Caribbean islands?

How To Get Your Travel Fix When You Can't Travel

With everything that is happening in the world at the moment, non-essential travel is impossible. This doesn't mean we can't think about travel or plan travel for the future. After all, it's the perfect way to have some much-needed escapism from the worries of the world.

So here are some ways you can get your travel fix when you can't travel. Enjoy!

Plan a fantasy trip

When we can't travel why not plan a fantasy trip? There are numerous online sites and offl
ine guidebooks to help you, such as Tripadvisor, Trivago, and Groupon for deals, and Lonely Planet and DK make some great guidebooks. Even if you don't want to travel abroad, planning a staycation is a great idea as we have so many beautiful and interesting places in the UK. Hopefully, your plans will become a reality. We are planning to do a couple of days trips in the future and perhaps combine more than one destination, and as there are trains going to Chichester via Brighton which means we can see both places on a South of England trip. Of course, as a blogger, I must say there are some great travel bloggers and vloggers out there too for travel inspiration.  This brings me to my next point...

Watch your favourite channels

Spend a night watching your favourite TV travel shows and your favourite travel vloggers on YouTube. I know my life is better when I watch Jane Mcdonald's cruising, even if I've never been on a cruising holiday, or (don't judge) Michael Portillos Railway Journeys. Also, we love watching our favourite US vloggers for escapism too like Tim Tracker (Disney and Orlando), Here Be Barr ( New York), or Matt Bridger (Las Vegas). Of course, don't forget the channel my husband creates for our travels - Fly Drive Explore! We love documenting flight reviews and travel in the UK, Europe and the USA. Another way is to watch American sports on TV like American football or American Ice Hockey to immerse yourself in the culture.

Learn a language

Learning a language is the perfect way to spend some time when you are not travelling. There are numerous companies that you can do this with, many online like Duolingo which is currently free to do and Babbel. In next to no time you will be ordering your meal in the local language and conversing with fluently when asking for directions.

Make a photo book

Many of us take a huge number of photos these days on our smartphones but often don't do anything with them. If you have a myriad of photos on your phone or camera, why not illustrate your travel through photo books online and get them printed out. I can recommend Photobook and also Artsy
Couture.

Have a cocktail night

So you can't get to the perfect white sand beach bar in the Caribbean or that cool little spot in Italy overlooking the lake, so have a cocktail night instead and bring the holiday vibes to you. Mix up some white rum, pineapple juice and cream of coconut for a delicious pina colada or chill some prosecco and mix with orange juice for an authentic mimosa or Aperol, prosecco and a splash of soda water for an Italian inspired Aperol spritz. Check out some summer-inspired whiskey cocktails here.

Recreate a dish from your travels

Want to recreate the amazing gumbo you had in New Orleans or the Philly cheesesteak from your trip to Philadelphia, or what about the salmon teriyaki from Japan? Then recreate a dis
h from your travels to bring back that holiday feeling. Check out Pinterest for recipe inspiration or go old school and order a cookery book from your local bookshop or Amazon.

Create a bucket list

For the ultimate fantasy holiday list, create a bucket list and fill it with the ultimate places you would love to go before you die. I've been lucky and travelled to a number of places around the world but Japan is one of the places at the top of my bucket list that I have never been to.  I would also love to cruise on the Norweigan Fjords before I die. Here are some luxury bucket list ideas.

So here is how to get your travel fix when you can't travel. Let me know, do you have any ideas?

Cruising To The Caribbean With Celebrity Cruises

The Caribbean has really captured my heart since my visit to Aruba in May this year. The azure warm sea, the choice of amazing seafood, the laid-back culture and the smiling friendly people all have made me want to return and explore more.

With so much to see and do around the Caribbean, cruising is the perfect way to see a selection of islands whilst taking just the one trip. Cruises are known as the epitome of luxury and a trip on a Celebrity Cruise is no different.

You can expect a huge range of suite, family and stateroom choices for your stay on board. What is even better is that at least 75% of the accommodation on board has their own private balcony. There is also the iconic main dining room which offers award-winning cuisine with a nightly changing menu. Should you wish not to visit the main dining room, there are an interesting selection of cafes, bistros and grills - or you could even order room service.

Entertainment is also available on board - there’s theatre, circus shows, dance, comedy, magic and even live music - plus if you have children, there is some fantastic entertainment for them in the children’s clubs. Four different age groups of fun-filled activities, all supervised by experienced youth staff members.

Finally, if you want to keep fit or relax on board, there are ultra-modern facilities with the latest high tech equipment with a range of wellness classes - or you can use the jacuzzis, outdoor pools, the indoor adults only Solarium or take advantage of the half an acre of real grass lawn on the top deck! There really is so much to see and do - just on board. However, when you’re sailing around the Caribbean, you want to know what else is out there when you get off the ship too!

So what different places can you visit? Here are just five of the destinations you could head to on your Celebrity Cruises trip to the Caribbean and why you may want to visit them.

Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia offers a little bit of everything which makes it the perfect stop off for first-time visitors. Not only does it have some of the best views in the Caribbean - you might have heard of the Pitons, a pair of jagged volcanic peaks that planes have to skirt around to touch down at the airport and they look completely unreal - but it also has some incredible beaches. Sugar Beach, in particular, is backed by dense forest and has its own stop of gorgeous white sand - but there are plenty of other beautiful beaches you could visit too.

Snorkelling is popular in Saint Lucia too - everyone loves to go and see the reef at Anse Piton which is close to the surface and full of amazing creatures.

Barbados

Barbados is another island that has plenty to see and do. You might want to head to Carlisle Bay, a marine bay park with a lighthouse - or take a walk through the Andromeda Gardens amid tropical trees and flowers. There are also plenty of caves you can visit - Harrison’s Cave is a gorgeous limestone cavern with streams and pools and the Animal Flower cave is a cave with a coral floor and sea anemones.

St Kitts

Full of pristine beaches and beautiful tropical forests, St Kitts is a very popular tourist resort. It has a casino and a superyacht marina for those interested in such things and there is also an abundance of beautiful natural sights such as the 3,972ft peak of Mount Liamuiga. The food on the island is said to be second to none and definitely worth a try.

Grenada

Another Caribbean island with absolutely spectacular beaches, mountains and lush rainforests, this island is a sight to behold. Something you wouldn’t want to miss is the underwater sculpture park - it looks absolutely incredible.

Dominica

My final recommendation of Caribbean islands to visit is Dominica. The Emerald Pool is definitely worth a visit - it is a tranquil natural pool with a waterfall. There is also the Cabrits National Park which has hiking trails and an 18th-century fort. One of the places I would love to visit is the Boiling Lake - you can hike there and see the hot spring.

I can’t wait to get the Caribbean again one day - where would you want to visit?

The Advantages Of A Cruise Holiday

There are so many ways to travel, and one which is exciting and has many advantages is cruising. It's not just a way to get to your destination, it's a holiday in its own right.  With all the facilities onboard some of the cruise ships, you don't even have to leave the ship if you don't want to.  There are plenty more advantages too. Let's have a look at the main advantages of a cruise holiday and why they are so popular in this day and age.

The ease of all-inclusive

If you have ever travelled all-inclusive before, then you will know how much easier it can make things. This is certainly true of cruise holidays, which are always of the all-inclusive type, and therefore a particularly easy way to have a holiday.  You don’t have to worry about anything not being included, or any further costs in particular, as you have it all arranged beforehand. Things that are included include delicious food, drink, entertainment from singers to magic shows, excursions and more. That makes it much easier to just sit back and enjoy the holiday - which, after all, is exactly what a holiday is for.

You can visit multiple destinations

A cruise is a great opportunity to travel for anyone who struggles to land on one particular destination. If you always find that you don’t know exactly where you want to go because you have so many places that are screaming out for you, or if you and your partner always argue about it, then going on a cruise can easily solve all of that. In most cruises, you will get to see a large number of destinations all as part of the same trip, so this is absolutely something that is worth considering. If nothing else, it means that there is likely to be something for everybody. Want a cruise of the Caribbean? Tick! Want a river cruise through Europe?  Tick! You can see so many destinations in one holiday with a cruise.

For what you get it's inexpensive

Generally, for what you are getting on a cruise holiday, you are not paying as much as you might expect.
Don't forget many include all your food and drink and excursions too as well as entertainment onboard. It can be especially inexpensive if you can manage to find a good deal with a cruise company if you know where to look. Shopping around with something like the Bolsover Cruise Club will throw up plenty of cruise deals that you can consider, so if you are trying to watch the pennies you will find that this is pretty easy to do it.

Easy eating great for fussy people

Eating is usually a big part of any cruise holiday, so anything you can do to make this easier is going to mean an easier and more enjoyable holiday. I have already mentioned that this will generally be included in the price of a cruise, but that’s not the only way in which eating is going to be easy. It is also because you will generally have a lot of choice in what you can eat, and that means it appeals to many people, even the fussy ones.  No worrying about where you are going to eat each day is a great perk too. There may be options to eat A La Carte as well for an extra supplement, and this is perfect if you want a change one night, or a more intimate romantic meal.

So here are the advantages of a cruise holiday. Have you ever been on a cruise? Does this type of holiday appeal?

10 Best Things To Do In Santorini

I love Greece, it is one of my favourite countries with many different islands to visit and explore. One such island is Santorini, an island of beauty that is about 120 miles southeast of Greece’s mainland. There are plenty of things to see and do on the island - here are my top ten picks.

Visit Amoudi Bay

A place I have been recommended by friends is Amoudi Bay. It is a little fishing village, has a little dock and the water is deep blue and light turquoise - absolutely beautiful. There are plenty of fabulous eateries and it is a great place to go for a swim.

Head To The Red Beach

Being an island, many of my suggestions may mention beaches simply because of their beauty. One such one is Red Beach - the name is pretty self-explanatory. It is a unique and stunning beach with red sand and amber cliffs.

Hike Your Way From Fira To Oia

This has been suggested to me a few times as one of the most amazing things to experience whilst in Santorini - and it doesn’t cost a penny. You get incredible views and it can take anywhere between two to five hours to reach your destination. There are only a few shops or restaurants on the way so make sure you’re well equipped and well stocked with refreshments for such a long hike.

Visit Skaros Rock

You may not realise it but there is a little church hidden on the far side of Skaros Rock that is great to visit. You descend the cliff to the path to get to the rock and perhaps you can even climb to the top if you dare?

Consider Cruising

If you are looking for something extremely fun to do whilst in Santorini, why not consider a Santorini cruise? Guests can have a day on the crystal water of the Aegean Sea and get to see the Famous Sunset of Santorini at the end of the day. There is the option to book semi-private cruises, private cruises or special cruises (all at different prices) so you can choose the right option for you.

Make Time For The Museum Of Prehistoric Fira

I always like to make time to visit museums and similar places when I am travelling as they hold so much history and culture within their walls. This small museum has plenty of information about Santorini history and can even help you to find some of the hidden alleys of Fira too!

Head To The Santorini Wine Museum

I mentioned above that I love visiting museums and this wine museum is certainly worth checking out too. It has a 300 metre long wine cave and this shows the history and development of the wine of Santorini over the last few hundred years. You also get four wine tastings included in admission to the museum.

Akrotiri Is Worth Heading To

Sometimes known as the ‘Greek Pompeii’, this is a must visit for history buffs. It is a wonderfully preserved archaeological site where a volcano erupted and layers of ash preserved the settlements nearby. It is an absolutely fascinating place to visit and there is also a lighthouse to explore.

How About Hot Springs?

Something that I see many people doing in Santorini is jumping off a boat into hot springs. It seems to be one of the most popular things to do and it is easy to see why - it is so much fun!

Finally, Choose A Winery

Whilst I mentioned the wine museum up above, nothing beats also visiting an actual winery such as the Sigalas winery. A private sommelier will take you on a tour of the vineyards and you get to taste the wine that is made from growing grapes on volcanic soil. What could be better?

For more information check out Santorini on the website Discover Greece.

Last Minute Luxury Holiday Ideas

I love a last minute holiday, don’t you? Sometimes we just need to get away and recharge our batteries, and often we think last minute holidays can be expensive. When you just want to get away, you don’t want to be splashing the cash as you haven’t had a chance to save, however, last minute holidays can be surprisingly affordable.

Here are some last minute luxury holiday ideas that you might enjoy.

Go Cruising

You may not think that you can get a good deal on a cruise last minute - but you certainly can! If cruises are your thing, it is worth checking out Bolsover, the UK’s number one cruise club. They find the best deals for you on the best dates for you - which is great when you just want to chill out but also want to get out of the country and cruise around some amazing sights.

You can live in the lap of luxury, taking in the ocean view whilst knowing you haven’t paid through the nose for your trip. With excellent food on board, facilities such as spa treatments and plenty of entertainment you won’t even need to leave the ship if you don’t want to! How great is that?

Live In Lodge Luxury

Lodges seem to the epitome of luxury, with all the space, and the comforts of home, as well as luxury touches such as hot tubs, you know you can relax in style. Most holiday parks now have their own section with lodges and there are various other independent companies who offer lodges for last minute stays so if you’re a homebody but still want a luxe experience, perhaps this is the option for you. If you look for a lodge in low season you can pick up some real bargains. We've stayed at Bluestone Wales in a lodge and in January it's super affordable.

Go Glamping

Perhaps your kids want to go camping last minute this weekend but you aren’t down for that idea? Why not compromise? Have a little bit of luxury and go glamping instead - your kids will be happy as they will still essentially get the camping experience and you don’t have to slum it in an overcrowded tent, unable to sleep. A search for "glamping last minute" on google will bring up a range of possibilities.

Pick A Flight

Not everyone will be up for this but if you are looking to get away and know your budget, why not head online and check out the flights going out of your local airport in the next few days.

If you don’t mind too much where you go, this can be a super fun experience. Pick a destination in the next few days which has seats available and check accommodation in that location. Some of the big airlines will allow you to put a package together on their site with a discount if you book accommodation and flights together. If you find some suitable luxe accommodation in that location, then why not book it all? This is great if you know you want to head on holiday but don’t exactly know where you want to go. You may actually get a great price on business class flights last minute, so if this is your dream that why not price up a luxury flight.

I love travelling but you already know that. Nothing beats a last minute trip away though because that trip is usually needed the most. Sometimes we just need a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

What are your favourite tips when it comes to last minute holidays? Have you ever done any of the above?
