The Ultimate Girls Night In Competition - Ends 21/05/15

Sometimes you just need your friends around for a good chatter. Good friends can be great at listening, be a shoulder to cry on and can help cheer you up. I like to surround myself with friends that make me laugh, after all, laughter is the best medicine as they say.

My friend Patty is a lovely woman. She has a disability and it never gets her down, even after having lots of operations, she still has a smile. Linda, my friend who I met through Zumba is a breath of fresh air, always laughing always bubbly, a mad cat woman as I say with affection.  Rachel is a bit of a foodie like me, and loves a good pub quiz, which is where I met her. When we meet up food and/or drink is always involved and lots of laughter!  The two Lucys are my lovely online friends, bloggers, compers, and are totally bonkers.  They both have big hearts and always make time to listen to me at the end of a computer. I have met both of them and they are amazing. I have lots of friendships online through my love of entering competitions and blogging.

Friendships are good for you. There are many research articles that say friendships boost self esteem, boost mood and offer support. Having a great network of friends may even make you live longer. An Australian study of nearly 1500 people found those with a large network of friends outlived those with fewer friends by 22%.

So make time for your friends, and if your social circumstances change, why not make some new friends? If your child starts school for the first time, take some time to chat to the others mums, they are not all scary - honest. if you go to a fitness class, say hi to the others in the class, or if you take up a new hobby, such as sewing, photography or bingo for example, there will be others in the same situation as you, unsure of themselves and what to do.

Friendships can help you live longer

I've known my best friend since we were in preschool at 3 years old, she is one of the nicest people I know and always happy to help anyone, she even sent her husband out at 11pm to the supermarket and then round to mine one night because I was housebound, home alone and had run out of milk so couldn't have a cup of tea :)

  154. Been an army wife means I have fantastic friends all over the world...and the chance to make new ones every 2 years when we move. My lovely new friend here is also mum to a disabled child, we can both talk frankly about the problems we have faced without fear of judgement. She also makes a mean cuppa, her door is always open and she's got a cheeky sense of humour like me

I can tell her anything and I know she will tell me her honest opinion no matter what... if I'm being silly about something she won't sugar coat it like other people do, she tells me what I need to hear even if it does upset me. She's been there for me through everything! xx

  164. Some best friends last forever - my first best friend was my friends from birth til the age of 11 when we lost touch after going to different secondary schools. 20 years' later, we got in touch again through social media and it was like no time had passed at all! When her dad died, his 18 yr old cat needed a new home and, because she works away a lot, my friend couldn't keep her. So I adopted her, and because we live in different cities, I've been photographing her daily so my mate can see her settling into her new home - http://www.21stcenturyfamily.co.uk/meet-frankie-the-21st-century-family-cat/
