How An ISO 27001 Certification Can Benefit Your Business

An ISO 27001 certification is globally recognised and given to companies that implement an information security management system (ISMS) that complies with the requirements of the international standard, ISO 27001. At the heart of an ISO 27001 certification are company-driven risk assessments. This means you’re able to establish and treat security threats according to your operation’s risk appetite and tolerance. Here I will explore the key benefits businesses can gain from obtaining an ISO 27001 certification.

Protect Your Reputation from Security Threats

cyber security

One of the most obvious reasons to obtain an ISO 27001 certification is it can help you avoid security threats. This includes both data breaches caused by an individual internally making mistakes and cybercriminals gaining access to confidential data. ISO 27001’s framework makes sure you’ve got the tools in place to elevate your brand across the three pillars of cybersecurity: processes, people and technology. You’re able to use the standard to pinpoint the relevant policies you’ll need to document. What’s more, the technologies can protect you and your employees to reduce the risk of mistakes.

Avoid Regulatory Fines

An ISO 27001 certification helps businesses avoid costly penalties linked with non-compliance with data protection requirements, like General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The standard’s framework shares many similarities with the GDPR, and companies can use its guidelines to reach and retain compliance.

Protect Your Business Reputation

Achieving ISO 27001 compliance means you’re able to demonstrate to stakeholders and clients that you take information security very seriously. This evidence can help you drum up interest, enhance your business reputation and keep your operation on track. Some companies will only work with businesses that can show they’re certified to ISO 27001. When you factor in cyber attacks are on the rise, having ISO 27001 certification helps protect your company and keeps your personal information safe and secure.

Gain A Competitive Edge

The business world can be incredibly competitive. Regardless of what sector you’re in, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. Should you become ISO 27001 certified, this will enhance your value proposition. It also provides a unique point of differentiation between you and your rivals. An ISO 27001 certification shows to customers you’ve got a proactive approach toward information security threats. Being compliant can also help you compete with international competitors. Citation ISO Certification has a thorough guide on ISO 27001. They explain the certification further, including additional benefits, costs, and requirements.

Improves Your Structure and Focus

As a business adapts and grows, it won’t be long before people lose sight of their responsibilities, especially when it comes to information security. Thanks to ISO 27001, you can design a system that has enough flexibility to make sure everyone maintains their focus on information security tasks. It requires businesses to conduct regular risk assessments. When performing a risk assessment, you can identify whether any changes need to be made.

Maintaining sensitive information and keeping it secure while keeping your customers' data safe, should be the top concern for any business. Achieving and maintaining ISO 27001 certification instils trust within the company and ensures you implement the best information security methods.

The Importance Of Pastoral Care In Schools

School attainment goes beyond what happens in the classroom, and there are various factors that can affect a child’s education, such as things going on at home, their mental health and friendship groups. So, as well as being experts on their own subject areas, teachers are trained to look out for any changes in behaviour and keep a general eye on their overall wellbeing and are there to offer support. This is known as pastoral care which is there to ensure the emotional and physical welfare of all pupils.

teacher and children in classroom

There are a few different systems that carry out this function; house systems, school mentors and form tutors. This post is in collaboration with a private school in Ireland and highlights the significance of each area.

School Houses

The school house system in the UK originates from early boarding schools where children belonged to a set house. Now it is adopted in a slightly different way by schools all over to promote teamwork, teach children about healthy competition and make them feel a part of the school community. They are put into houses at the start of school, and this is the team that they will be able to represent in sports tournaments and other school games.

Form Tutors

They will also be allocated a set teacher for registration who they can go to if they’re having any problems. As they will see them every day, they will be able to keep a close eye on your child and see how they are doing.

School Mentors

Children can be paired with a mentor to help them with confidence, raise their aspirations, address any behaviour issues and work alongside them one on one. They will work closely with your child to help them through any difficulties they are having and will be able to hopefully get them on track.

The Benefits of Coding Lessons for Children

Coding is a necessary skill to have in the digital age and can help your child to leverage greater opportunities in the future. Aside from digital literacy, coding also allows children to enhance many of their transferable skills like problem solving, creative thinking and resilience.

In this post that I’ve put together with a private school in Cheshire, we shall explore each of these benefits in more detail.

Employability

Coding skills are in high demand. Not just here, but all over the world. One of the main benefits of course is that your child will have a broader skill set and therefore have access to a greater variety of opportunities when they leave school. It also helps them to future proof themselves as the job market is set to be very different by the year 2030 and 75% of all jobs will require some level of advanced digital skill.

An Understanding of The Digital World

Another is their ability to understand and utilise modern technology. Everything is going digital and knowing code means that children can understand and interact with the world around them.

Problem Solving

As briefly touched on earlier, coding relies on several key transferable skills. Problem Solving is one of them and is one that your child can work on when applying what they have learned to create their own coding creations in class.

Resilience

As with anything that they want, children must exercise resilience and patience. When coding, it’s likely that the process won’t be straightforward, and they will come across obstacles. They will need to remain calm, pick themselves up and take these challenges in their stride.

As I’ve established, coding is vital for children to learn. While you may not have a clue about coding, there are several ways that you can help them in this area. Here are some of our suggestions below:

  • Introduce your child to coding games - Coding games are a fun and interactive means for children to learn about code. They can even work on projects of their own whilst learning the basics.
  • Start with an easy programming language - Python and Scratch are our recommendations for beginners.
  • Consider online lessons or a coding summer camp.

I hope that this post gave you a little more insight into coding and how you can support your child with their computing lessons at school. For more useful parenting resources, be sure to have a look at my other blogs.

What to Eat And Avoid When Trying To Conceive

Nutrition is vital for our overall health and wellbeing and even more so when you’re trying to get pregnant. You will create the environment for your child to grow and develop so will need to consume nutrient rich foods and avoid those that have the potential to cause harm. This will also aid the function of a healthy reproductive system and help improve your chances.

pregnant woman

To create this post, I've teamed up with a fertility evaluation clinic which gave me a little insight into what you should eat and avoid when trying to conceive.

1. Cut Out Alcohol

It goes without saying that you should cut out alcohol. It can disrupt oestrogen levels in the body (the reproductive hormone needed for ovulation or the release of an egg). It can also reduce ovarian reserve which is the number of eggs that a woman will have throughout her entire lifetime. As women cannot produce more, this can limit the chances of getting pregnant.

2. Try The Mediterranean Diet

What you should do however is consume a good balanced diet with plenty of nutrient rich foods. The Mediterranean diet is one that is linked to higher levels of fertility for this reason as it includes monounsaturated fats, protein rich foods such as legumes and limits those that are bad, like red meats.

3. Limit Your Consumption of Refined Sugar

Following on from the point above, you should avoid foods that are high in refined sugar. While addictive and adding sweetness to food, refined sugar can be harmful to the reproductive system in many ways:

  • High blood sugar levels trigger the release of insulin which can increase the risk of developing PCOS if insulin resistance develops.
  • Can damage eggs.
  • Can lead to weight gain which can also damage eggs.
Implementing these changes can be hard, especially if you’re used to consuming these foods on a daily basis. You may find that taking a staggered approach and gradually cutting down helps and is more effective to work on each of these points.

Exploring STEM Subjects With Your Child

STEM plays an integral role in teaching children about the world around them. The acronym is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. STEM subjects offer an explanation as to why the world is the way that it is and fuels a love for learning, experimenting and innovation.

cooking with children

To help your child in each of these areas, here is a list of teaching ideas that were shared by a Surrey private school.

How STEM Fits into Everyday Life

One way to explore STEM with children is through real life examples and there are plenty that we come across in our day to day life. When we fall ill for example, it’s the result of pathogens and those that are bacterial can be treated with a course of antibiotics. Although, they must be taken correctly to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Get Creating

Similarly, you can give children the opportunity to create inventions of their own. That might be a model volcano, circuit, or whacky recipes they’ve come up with. Learning through play makes for the best learning experience.

Practice Makes Perfect

Maths is one of the most important subjects at school and many other subjects rely on it to a certain degree, like science and technology. The key to helping your child make progress in maths is practice. Outside of the homework that they will be expected to do anyway, spend some time with your child to carry out home learning activities. Look for fun everyday maths activities to apply what they have learnt, like cooking where they will need to use operations like weighing, addition and subtraction.

Pique Their Interest

There is so much of the world that we have not yet discovered. In fact, 80% of the sea is still unexplored. The same is so for space. While we’ve made significant progress in space exploration, there is so much that we are still yet to learn about the universe and its solar systems. To put things into perspective and your child's interest, there are a ton of documentaries that you can watch together and museums where they can explore the work that’s been done so far.

These are just a few of the ways that you can explore STEM with your child. When planning any sort of at home learning, the key is to make it fun and entertaining. Using what you know about your child and what they like, you may even be able to come up with a few ideas of your own. For more parenting content, take a look at my other blog posts.

Timeless Radiance: Beauty Tips for Women Over 50

Embracing your age is a powerful statement of confidence and self-assurance. As we enter our 50s, we have a wealth of experiences and wisdom that make us truly beautiful. However, taking care of our skin, hair, and overall well-being becomes even more crucial at this stage. In this blog post, I'll explore a range of beauty tips tailored specifically for women over 50, helping you enhance your natural beauty and glow with confidence.

Prioritise Skincare

woman

Healthy, radiant skin is the cornerstone of any beauty regimen. At this stage of your life, it's essential to focus on the hydration of your skin, improving its elasticity, and providing protection in all weathers.
  • Cleanse Gently: Use a mild cleanser to remove impurities without stripping away natural oils. Baby cleansers or a brand like Simple are great for sensitive skin.

  • Moisturise Daily: Opt for a rich, hydrating moisturiser to combat dryness and maintain suppleness. Apply after washing your face to lock the moisture in. A firming lotion could also help keep skin supple and keep the wrinkles away.

  • Sun Protection: Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Nothing ages like the sun.
  • Exfoliate Regularly: Gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover for a fresher complexion.

  • Serums and Anti-Aging Products: Incorporate serums containing antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and retinol to combat signs of ageing.  Be aware that these could affect sensitive skin so try a little at first.

Embrace Natural Makeup

Less is more when it comes to makeup for mature skin. Opt for products that enhance your features without overwhelming your face.

  • Hydrating Primer: A hydrating primer creates a smooth canvas for makeup application, making it last longer, while also providing an extra layer of moisture.

  • Tinted Moisturiser or Light Foundation: Choose a lightweight, hydrating foundation or tinted moisturiser for a natural, dewy finish. A BB cream can also work wonders for older skin
  • Concealer for Blemishes and Dark Circles: A creamy concealer can help disguise imperfections and brighten the under-eye area. Be careful though that a concealer isn't too heavy or it will settle in your lines.

  • Soft, Neutral Tones: Use neutral eyeshadows, blush, and lip colours for a subtle, youthful look.

  • Defined Brows and Lashes: Well-groomed brows and a touch of mascara can frame your face and open up your eyes. If you have hooded eyes, which can happen as you age then curl your eyelashes first.

Focus on Hair Care

Hair often undergoes changes in texture and thickness as we age. These tips will help you maintain lustrous locks.

  • Regular Trims: Frequent trims help eliminate split ends, keeping your hair looking healthy and full of life.

  • Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner: Choose products that provide moisture and nourishment to combat dryness and frizz.

  • Avoid Overstyling: Minimise the use of heated styling tools and opt for heat-free hairstyles to prevent damage. If you are using heated styling products ensure to use a heat protection spray first.

  • Consider a New Cut: A well-chosen hairstyle can take years off your appearance. Consult with a trusted stylist for a flattering cut.

  • Experiment with Colour: If you're open to it, consider experimenting with highlights or lowlights to add dimension and vibrancy.

You Are What You Eat

True beauty radiates from the inside out. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are all essential components of a beauty regimen.
  • Balanced Diet: Focus on nutrient-dense foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and Omega-3 fatty acids to support healthy skin and hair.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your skin well-hydrated and promote a radiant complexion.

  • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to boost circulation, promote a healthy glow, and maintain flexibility. You should be walking at least 10,000 steps a day.

  • Prioritise Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to repair and regenerate.

  • Stress Management: Practice relaxation techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to promote overall well-being. There are many apps that provide stress management like Headspace or Calm.

Conclusion

Beauty knows no age, and women in their 50s have a unique style and confidence that should be celebrated. By following these beauty tips tailored for women over 50, you'll not only enhance your natural beauty but also exude confidence and radiance that is truly timeless. Embrace this new chapter of your life and let your inner beauty shine through.
