Grand Designs is an inspiring programme. and presenter Kevin Mccloud follows some of Britain's ambitious self-build projects. Have you ever thought of a self-build project? The benefits would be you could choose everything yourself from the ground up. Choose where to live, check, choose your piece of land - check, chose your own architectural design, check, choose a modern top of the range kitchen, check, choose a stylish bathroom, check and so on.
I guess it could be stressful on times, self-builds are notorious for going over budget, and problems are likely to occur but for your very own house designed to your specifications, some things are worth the stress.
First, you would need to look for land for sale, then get an architect on board to design your plans, then the fun starts when you have to pick your fixtures and fittings. Designing and building your house like this can be a very cost-effective way of getting a return on your investment, even if you want to live in it and not sell it on in the immediate future. You can even plan that beautiful garden with the rose bushes and birdhouse.
One day I'll get there, until then, I'm happy to live in my flat by the sea.
Have you ever thought of building your own house? If so where would you build it?
