Bluestone Wales - A Luxury Weekend

Recently we returned to Bluestone Wales as part of the Bluestone Bloggers programme. Bluestone Wales is a luxury holiday park in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside in West Wales. With a five star rating from Visit Wales, the accommodation is excellent, and the activities on site are many and varied.

A Caldey lodge
Accommodation

We have visited Bluestone before and stayed in a Grassholm lodge, but this time, we stayed in a Caldey Lodge.  This semi-detached lodge sleeps 4 people in two bedrooms, one double and one twin, has a large open plan lounge and dining area, a fully fitted kitchen, and wetroom.

Kitchen with everything you need

The kitchen as you can see has everything you need from a full oven, to fridge (with small freezer compartment), microwave and dishwasher as well as kettle and toaster. You could easily cook a full meal for four if you wished.

The lounge diner area with a great view

The lounge area has a table and chairs to seat four and two sofas, a small table and a small flat screen TV with Freeview. The view from the window was of the lovely countryside, we even got to see baby bunny rabbits hopping around.

Double bedroom

The bedrooms have wardrobes, a chest of drawers and a safe in one, as well as a double or twin beds. Decor is classy in dark wood with a beige bedspread. The beds are medium firm and supportive.

Wet room

The wet room has a shower, toilet and sink. Whilst very functional we did find that if you weren't careful everything in the wet room, got, well, how can you put it - wet!

We thought everything in the apartment was of a high standard and was in excellent condition. If you want to see a tour of the accommodation, check out this video we made below.

Surroundings

The lake

Bluestone is set in the most beautiful countryside and this is a major plus point of staying here. The lake at the centre of the resort is great to study the wildlife. When we visited, this time, there was an abundance of ducks including some ducklings on the lake. They were so cute to watch.

Bunnies roaming free

Bug lodge

The walking trails around the lake are great to watch the wildlife too, we saw many bunnies hopping around, without a care in the world. We saw this bug lodge above on our wanders too with a sign to show what could be nesting there.

Activities

The Well Spa

When we checked into Bluestone Wales we were given an itinerary of activities for the week, a mix of free and ones you have to pay for.

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, is great for families. This large all weather water park is free to all guests and with facilities like an indoor wave machine, and a large twisting water slide I can see why it is very popular.

The Village

The Village is at the heart of the resort. Here is where the booking office is for activities, little shops selling toys and gifts and Newton Stores, a grocers where you can buy the essentials for a simple meal, including Mr W's essential - wine!

Activities you can book include laser clay shooting, crossbows, archery, and rock climbing, to name a few. For the little ones, there is everything from baby yoga, and messy play to high ropes and tree climbing for the older ones. There is also an outdoor area here for the children to play.

You can also hire bikes and golf carts to get around the resort. If you have mobility problems or very little ones I would recommend a golf cart as the resort is incredibly hilly.

Terry John historian

We booked a history walk with the resident historian Terry John. This walk is free if you already have an activity booked. On our walk, Terry told us about the rich history of the area. Where Bluestone is set was all open farmland once upon a time and was a Medieval parish in the eleven hundreds. We got to see Castle Coch, a ruin of a castle in the grounds of Bluestone, and heard all about John Poyer, a Welsh soldier during the English civil war who was executed for treason.

The thermal Well Spa

If a history walk is not your thing, you can relax in the thermal Well Spa, have a treatment, or take in the thermal spa suite. We were lucky to be able to try this too.

The hydrotherapy pool

We loved the hydrotherapy pool, it was so relaxing with the warm waters and the adjustable jets. We could have stayed here all day. When you want to get out try the different therapeutic rooms, such as the steam room, the ice room and the hot brick sauna, all included in the admission price to the spa. After we tried out the different rooms we sat and had a coffee in Caffi Mor. I was a little envious as I didn't realise they served afternoon tea and I had already eaten. Mr W had a glass of Prosecco though to make up for it!

Food and drink

A very authentic tasting chicken Jalfrezi at The Knight's Tavern

We ate at the pub, The Knight's Tavern twice during our stay. The family friendly pub was busy as it was a Saturday night and the Euro finals were on but the food came quick. We have eaten here before and found it ok, nothing special but this time the food had definitely improved. In fact, my husband said his Chicken Jalfrezi was the best pub curry he has ever had - high praise indeed from this curry connoisseur!

My fish and chips were also excellent, the batter was light and crispy and the meal was served on a plate that looked like the plastic packaging you get fish and chips in - a cute idea.

Their signature restaurant The Oak Tree uses local Welsh produce with an Italian slant, and there is also the Farmhouse Grill serving homely family food, and Camp Smokey with an outdoor barbeque area for meals outdoor. The bakery has had a makeover since early in the year, and it now rebranded as Ty Coffi. It is now much bigger and serves a wider menu such as a range of sandwiches and paninis.  This is what we like about Bluestone Wales, every time we go they seem to improve the facilities and the quality of the service they offer.

What to do around Bluestone

Carew Castle

Bluestone is next door to Oakwood theme park and a 25 minute drive from stunning Tenby and nearby Saundersfoot, both lovely seaside destinations. If you love history, Carew Castle and tidal mill is 7 miles away.

A stay in Bluestone ranges in price from £129 in low season for a weekend break and is fantastic value when compared to other luxury holiday parks of similar nature. We personally think Bluestone is a fabulous break for families and couples looking for an active or alternatively relaxing break. The quality of the accommodation is excellent, the facilities and services are constantly being updated and improved and the location is beautiful, being in the stunning Welsh countryside. I would definitely go back and I'm proud to say I'm a Bluestone blogger.

  37. I won't even book a place these days if I haven't seen a blog account on it. I was burned once, with a trip advisor review (oh my gosh the place...the place was awful) so I don't trust it anymore. Blogs you see the photos first hand and I like that a lot.
