A Winter Getaway At Bluestone Wales

If you were to ask me my favourite place to stay in Wales I would say without a shadow of a doubt Bluestone Wales. I have been lucky enough to visit this luxury resort situated 10 miles from Tenby in West Wales a number of times and I have always had a great time.

The luxury holiday park and resort is set in over 500 acres of beautiful countryside. With the emphasis on activities as well as relaxation, there are many things to do here for young and old alike.

I am also proud to be a Bluestone Blogger and get invited back to review on a regular basis. I could never be complimentary about a venue though if I didn't like it,  but that has never been the case with Bluestone. I mean look at the standard of accommodation at the Ramsey Lodge below on our recent stay, amazing isn't it!?

Accommodation

The Ramsey Lodge is designed for 'upside down living', with the living space upstairs and the bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs. This is a genius idea as you get a terrific view of the beautiful scenery around the park.

Everything in the lodge was perfect. The two bedroom lodge had a double bedroom and a twin bedroom,  one with ensuite bath and toilet and the other with an ensuite shower and toilet room. Upstairs is the lounge and kitchen/diner. The lounge contained a table and chairs big enough for four, two sofas, a flat screen TV and DVD player. The kitchen had a small fridge/freezer, cooker, microwave, dishwasher, toaster and kettle, and all the dishes, pans and utensils you would need to cook and serve a meal.

The condition of everything was spot on. The bathrooms were incredibly clean, the sofas and tables were in excellent condition, and there were no scuff marks on the walls. The carpet also looked new and was different to when we visited the park last year. You can see Bluestone Wales refurbish and replace on a regular basis.

Activities

The park has amazing activities for kids and I can confirm that the Blue Lagoon all weather water park, looks amazing and has a fantastic looking slide.

The family adventure centre will also keep the kids happy with mini golf, a climbing wall and soft play as well as a circus zone, messy play area and a sensory zone for babies, all under cover.

You can hire bikes and buggies to get around the park, a good idea if you have little ones or mobility problems as the park can be steep in places.

There is even the Well Spa where adults can have a massage, pedicure or other treatments as well as using the small pool and the different therapeutic rooms.

The outdoor play area always looks like great fun too!

If you love nature, check out the bug lodge and the beautiful lake with the little ducklings, whilst history lovers will enjoy the history walk with the local historian Terry John which is free.

Also watch out for the bunnies!

This visit we decided to try one of the activities for adults. Now, should we go for the archery, high rope zip line, laser clay pigeon shooting, or indoor rock climbing? As I am not a fan or heights we decided to try one of the shooting activities so after visiting the booking centre we trotted off to the laser pigeon shooting the next day.

Now I am a bit of a crack shot. This is not due to a misspent youth, more to do with a natural ability. I think I was Annie Oakley in a former life. Actually, I don't know how I do it but I'm pretty nifty with a gun, and found this out at a shooting range in Las Vegas, so the pressure was on.

Mr W is a competitive sort, and in everything we do he always has to be the best, and can slyly put me under pressure if I am winning. It was going to be interesting to see who was the Bluestone clay pigeon champion January 2017!

After a quick explanation of how the guns worked, it was on to the practice round. The guns have a little infra-red light that is fired at the clay targets, this then reflects back to the scoreboard. I did well in the practice round, and Mr W was already complaining that his gun wasn't working properly... Forty-five minutes later, we were all finished, and I won against three other people and I don't think I will ever hear the end of it! So if you want to upset everyone in your family I would highly recommend trying one of the competitive sports when you visit.

Food

Bluestone Wales has a small grocery shop as well as a number of cafes and restaurants on site mostly all in the village area.  The shop has a captive audience so prices are on the high side so we would recommend taking most of the food you will think you will need with you. You can get most things you need in the shop though so don't worry if you forget anything or just want to buy food when you are there.

Camp Smokey looked good fun but was not open when we were there. The Farmhouse Grill is a restaurant tailored to families and Ty Coffi is a super little cafe.

We had a really good meal at The Knight's Tafarn, the pub in the village area. The chicken madras, poppadoms, and nan bread we ordered were really tasty and the chips that came as a side dish were very good too.

We were surprised that the more upmarket Oak Tree restaurant had changed the type of food they served since last time we went. Instead of a refined upmarket bistro, the restaurant now serves more hearty pizza and pasta dishes.

We ate there one night and the food was good, not perfect but still good, and the prices were excellent, with main courses being about £10. I had a pulled beef ragu and Mr W had penne arrabbiata, which we both enjoyed. There were no starters other than garlic bread, and it would have been nice to have more choice here. Dessert options were limited to chocolate brownies and ice cream, and again more choice would have been brilliant but the brownie was outstanding and the ice cream great quality.

Service was very good at the Oak Tree restaurant, and this has much improved since the first time we visited Bluestone Wales. As this is the main restaurant for adults, (although children are welcome too) perhaps the lighting could have been adjusted to give a more ambient atmosphere.  I do think however Bluestone Wales have made the right decision to change the restaurant to pizza and pasta, just a few more starters and desserts would have made it better.

Bluestone Wales is well situated in West Wales, being a short drive from Tenby and Saundersfoot, and if you love history Carew Castle is only 7 miles away.

Bluestone Wales has something for everyone. We saw a real mix of people during this stay, from families with babies to retired couples. The luxury holiday park suits those looking for a family-friendly activity break to those looking for a quiet stay in a beautiful holiday park close to nature. There is also lots to do for free - check out this post on 5 free things to do in Bluestone with a toddler, for example.

I haven't touched on all the activities and events available, but these change seasonally. The park is always changing, updating and improving and Bluestone should be commended for this. With a 4 night midweek break from £149 per lodge in the low season then I think it can be tremendous value for money too.

Bluestone Wales - A Luxury Weekend

Recently we returned to Bluestone Wales as part of the Bluestone Bloggers programme. Bluestone Wales is a luxury holiday park in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside in West Wales. With a five star rating from Visit Wales, the accommodation is excellent, and the activities on site are many and varied.

A Caldey lodge
Accommodation

We have visited Bluestone before and stayed in a Grassholm lodge, but this time, we stayed in a Caldey Lodge.  This semi-detached lodge sleeps 4 people in two bedrooms, one double and one twin, has a large open plan lounge and dining area, a fully fitted kitchen, and wetroom.

Kitchen with everything you need

The kitchen as you can see has everything you need from a full oven, to fridge (with small freezer compartment), microwave and dishwasher as well as kettle and toaster. You could easily cook a full meal for four if you wished.

The lounge diner area with a great view

The lounge area has a table and chairs to seat four and two sofas, a small table and a small flat screen TV with Freeview. The view from the window was of the lovely countryside, we even got to see baby bunny rabbits hopping around.

Double bedroom

The bedrooms have wardrobes, a chest of drawers and a safe in one, as well as a double or twin beds. Decor is classy in dark wood with a beige bedspread. The beds are medium firm and supportive.

Wet room

The wet room has a shower, toilet and sink. Whilst very functional we did find that if you weren't careful everything in the wet room, got, well, how can you put it - wet!

We thought everything in the apartment was of a high standard and was in excellent condition. If you want to see a tour of the accommodation, check out this video we made below.

Surroundings

The lake

Bluestone is set in the most beautiful countryside and this is a major plus point of staying here. The lake at the centre of the resort is great to study the wildlife. When we visited, this time, there was an abundance of ducks including some ducklings on the lake. They were so cute to watch.

Bunnies roaming free

Bug lodge

The walking trails around the lake are great to watch the wildlife too, we saw many bunnies hopping around, without a care in the world. We saw this bug lodge above on our wanders too with a sign to show what could be nesting there.

Activities

The Well Spa

When we checked into Bluestone Wales we were given an itinerary of activities for the week, a mix of free and ones you have to pay for.

The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, is great for families. This large all weather water park is free to all guests and with facilities like an indoor wave machine, and a large twisting water slide I can see why it is very popular.

The Village

The Village is at the heart of the resort. Here is where the booking office is for activities, little shops selling toys and gifts and Newton Stores, a grocers where you can buy the essentials for a simple meal, including Mr W's essential - wine!

Activities you can book include laser clay shooting, crossbows, archery, and rock climbing, to name a few. For the little ones, there is everything from baby yoga, and messy play to high ropes and tree climbing for the older ones. There is also an outdoor area here for the children to play.

You can also hire bikes and golf carts to get around the resort. If you have mobility problems or very little ones I would recommend a golf cart as the resort is incredibly hilly.

Terry John historian

We booked a history walk with the resident historian Terry John. This walk is free if you already have an activity booked. On our walk, Terry told us about the rich history of the area. Where Bluestone is set was all open farmland once upon a time and was a Medieval parish in the eleven hundreds. We got to see Castle Coch, a ruin of a castle in the grounds of Bluestone, and heard all about John Poyer, a Welsh soldier during the English civil war who was executed for treason.

The thermal Well Spa

If a history walk is not your thing, you can relax in the thermal Well Spa, have a treatment, or take in the thermal spa suite. We were lucky to be able to try this too.

The hydrotherapy pool

We loved the hydrotherapy pool, it was so relaxing with the warm waters and the adjustable jets. We could have stayed here all day. When you want to get out try the different therapeutic rooms, such as the steam room, the ice room and the hot brick sauna, all included in the admission price to the spa. After we tried out the different rooms we sat and had a coffee in Caffi Mor. I was a little envious as I didn't realise they served afternoon tea and I had already eaten. Mr W had a glass of Prosecco though to make up for it!

Food and drink

A very authentic tasting chicken Jalfrezi at The Knight's Tavern

We ate at the pub, The Knight's Tavern twice during our stay. The family friendly pub was busy as it was a Saturday night and the Euro finals were on but the food came quick. We have eaten here before and found it ok, nothing special but this time the food had definitely improved. In fact, my husband said his Chicken Jalfrezi was the best pub curry he has ever had - high praise indeed from this curry connoisseur!

My fish and chips were also excellent, the batter was light and crispy and the meal was served on a plate that looked like the plastic packaging you get fish and chips in - a cute idea.

Their signature restaurant The Oak Tree uses local Welsh produce with an Italian slant, and there is also the Farmhouse Grill serving homely family food, and Camp Smokey with an outdoor barbeque area for meals outdoor. The bakery has had a makeover since early in the year, and it now rebranded as Ty Coffi. It is now much bigger and serves a wider menu such as a range of sandwiches and paninis.  This is what we like about Bluestone Wales, every time we go they seem to improve the facilities and the quality of the service they offer.

What to do around Bluestone

Carew Castle

Bluestone is next door to Oakwood theme park and a 25 minute drive from stunning Tenby and nearby Saundersfoot, both lovely seaside destinations. If you love history, Carew Castle and tidal mill is 7 miles away.

A stay in Bluestone ranges in price from £129 in low season for a weekend break and is fantastic value when compared to other luxury holiday parks of similar nature. We personally think Bluestone is a fabulous break for families and couples looking for an active or alternatively relaxing break. The quality of the accommodation is excellent, the facilities and services are constantly being updated and improved and the location is beautiful, being in the stunning Welsh countryside. I would definitely go back and I'm proud to say I'm a Bluestone blogger.

Bluestone Wales Thermal Spa Break

Bluestone Wales is a luxury holiday park set in the beautiful West Wales countryside. Recently I was lucky enough to have the chance to visit on a thermal spa break recently.

Awarded with a five star rating from Visit Wales, a stay at Bluestone can be as energetic, relaxing or as fun as you make it. With a variety of family friendly activities, you know the kids will love this place and with the gorgeous countryside on your doorstep, Bluestone appeals to both families and couples alike that love the outdoor life.

Accommodation

We stayed in a Ramsey lodge, which had two bedrooms downstairs, and ensuite bathrooms to both rooms. Upstairs is the lounge/dining room with an open plan kitchen. The lodge is deliberately set out for 'upside down living', so you get views over the beautiful valley.

As you can see from the photos everything was of a high standard and the lodge was very well equipped. The kitchen includes a fridge, full cooker, dishwasher, and microwave. It is easy to cook for yourself and your family if you need to with the fully equipped kitchen. I cooked a meal one night and had everything i needed. The lounge has large leather sofas, a table and tv with Freeview and a dvd player.

The dining area has a spacious wooden table and chairs - big enough for 4 people.

Insider Tip: You only get very basic washing up items, so if you are planning to cook bring washing up liquid, as well as extra toilet rolls (you get one per bathroom). You can buy provisions in the small Newton grocery shop but prices vary a lot.

The countryside in which Bluestone is set, is really gorgeous. The lake is in the centre of the resort and many lodges over look this area. There are walking trails around the lake and you are encouraged to watch and study the wildlife, we saw a bug lodge on our walk.

Activities

There are a huge amount of activities on offer at Bluestone and when you check in you are given an itinerary for the week. Some are free and some you have to pay for. The Blue Lagoon, the large all weather water park is free to all guests and has a large flume ride, indoor wave machine and much more for all the family and little ones too. There is a large indoor play area for children as well as an outdoor play area too in 'The Village'.

'The Village' is where all the shops and restaurants are based and also the booking centre where you can book paid for activities. There are lots of activities for children and paid for activities for adults and teenagers include archery, rock climbing, laser clay shooting, cross bow, kayaking in the summer month and for the very adventurous (and those not scared of heights!) the high wire experience. You can also hire bikes and golf carts to get around the resort - but be sure to bring your driving licence for the latter.

Bluestone Wales is very hilly and if you have little ones or you have difficultly with mobility then a golf cart is recommended.

Insider Tip - As soon as you have your booking reference you can book and pay for activities in advance online. Especially useful to do this for peak season. you can also order groceries in advance to be delivered to your lodge.

Our focus this time was on an adult relaxing thermal spa break break so we had admission to the
Well Spa for a thermal spa experience included.

The 2 hour thermal spa experience allows you access to the 6 pod rooms including an Ice room and Salt Room, herbal steam room and marine steam room, two saunas and the small heated outdoor hydrotherapy pool. The pool especially was very relaxing as it was warm and had a variety of jets and whirl pools. Sitting in the warm water, being massaged by the jets with the rain coming down gently, was a lovely experience.

We stopped for food in Y Mor cafe, in the spa and I had a lovely chicken, bacon and tomato sandwich. Then it was time for my pedicure.

The young therapist Caryn was very chatty and personable and after a consultation gave me a pedicure and painted my nails. She is an asset to the resort and I would give the treatment 9 out of 10, more attention to the rough skin on my feet would have made it a 10.

Spa packages are available for an indulgent treat or you can book treatments separately. Access to the spa is available from £35 for a 2 hour session. My pedicure was £70 but that included admission to and use of facilities at the spa.

Restaurants

There are a variety of places to eat at Bluestone. The Oak Tree restaurant uses local Welsh produce with an Italian slant and is the 'posh' restaurant. We ate there one night and enjoyed the food. I had Italian meatballs in a ricotta sauce. The meatballs were well seasoned and the dish was tasty. My husband had a pizza and it wasn't quite as nice, the base was thick and we felt it should be thin and not doughy.

There is a pub called the Knight's Tavern and a Farmhouse Grill restaurant as well as a number of cafes.  Camp Smokey looked great for the Summer months, an outdoor barbecue area. Millers Bakery is the perfect spot for a coffee and muffin and I was pleased that they serve soya milk too. We ate at the Knight's Tavern one night and the food was ok, nothing special, my chicken was tough and overcooked although my husband's meal was better - good chips!

Insider Tip - Talking about chips, The Chippy is a a takeaway cart where you can get a quick meal such as fish, sausage, pie and chips to take back to your lodge. Every Thursday there is a quiz in the Knight's Tavern where you can win prizes.

Conclusion

This is the third time we have visited Bluestone National Park. There are a few small points that could be improved - the wi-fi is very spotty but you can upgrade at a price, and the food can be a little expensive both in the shop and the restaurants. The meals we had in the restaurant and the pub weren't consistent although some were very good. It's a little bit of a shame that there are no other restaurants outside of the park within walking distance.

All the staff we came across were helpful and trained well and the beauty therapist, was lovely. The lodges are very comfortable and well equipped, the activities available are many and varied and the country setting is beautiful. If you want a relaxing break with the countryside on your doorstep, Bluestone is definitely a place to visit. With lots of children's activities, you may think that it's just for families with children, but this is not the case. On this occasion we visited without my son and we had a lovely time. We will be back to Bluestone one day, I hope it's sooner rather than later.
