What To Do In A Car Accident

A car accident can be a very shocking thing to happen, and whether it's your fault or not, there are some things you need to do straight away. Let's have a look at what they are and how you can resolve any issues in a clear and straightforward way as possible.

Lastly, you can try to round up your payments every month to reduce the length of your loan. For example, you can round up each monthly payment to the closest £10. If you find ways to increase your monthly income, you can even round up your payments to the nearest £100. This is a very easy way to reduce your loan term and it is very simple to apply to your budget.

Check The Pressure

One such resource on the website is the tyre pressure checker - all you need to do is input the make, model and vehicle (engine type) of your car and they will let you know the correct tyre pressure for your vehicle.

Tyre pressure is so important as under-inflated tyres can affect handling and grip - they can also suffer from a sudden rapid deflation which is extremely dangerous, especially if you are travelling at speed at the time.

Running costs are also reduced if tyres are at their correct pressure - why wouldn’t you want to ensure your safety and lower running costs by checking your pressure regularly?

What Is Your Tread Depth? 


Would you know how to check the tread depth of your tyres? Not many people do! One such way is the ‘20p test’. The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm.

The 20p test is where you take a coin and put it into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the coin is obscured when inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. If it is visible instead, then the tyres are potentially illegal and unsafe. You should always do the test around the three different locations around each tyre.

If your tread depth is correct, then the grooves help to remove water from the contact patch between your tyres and the road so your car can function properly in wet weather. If this depth isn’t adequate, your vehicle may struggle to perform such functions and thus it isn’t as safe to be driving.

Something else to consider is the financial implications. Failure to comply with the minimum tread depth could mean a fine of up to £2,500 and up to three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Are You Safe For Winter or Summer? 


Something else to consider is the fact that your car needs to be suitable for winter driving - this often means getting some winter tyres which are specifically designed for such weather conditions. Steering, acceleration and braking are more difficult during this season as normal tyres have less grip. It is not just extreme conditions that can affect the performance of your tyres but also cold and damp roads too. 

Also, don't forget to check your tyres out before those Summer road trips as well. If your car is carrying more than usual you will need to check the tyre safety and pressure.

What Happens During An MOT Test

MOT’s are something all car owners have to take their cars for at some point - and something that many often dread, but what exactly does an MOT test entail? An MOT or Ministry of Transport Test is a test of a car once it is three years old in the UK. This annual test is important to ensure a car meets road safety and environmental standards. There are at least a dozen checks that a qualified professional will do to make sure that your car is roadworthy. If your car fails the test you will be advised how to fix it and it must be tested again. Only cars that pass the MOT test are allowed on UK roads. Are your lights and reflectors fully working?


During an MOT, the front, rear, brake, fog, indicator and registration plate lights and rear reflectors will all be checked to see if they are fully working, correctly positioned and secure. Pairs of lights must be of the same colour, size and shape and the headlights should be below the horizontal.

If you have power steering, this will also be checked - testers will make sure that your vehicle has at least the minimum level of power steering fluid in the reservoir.

Your suspension will also be checked thoroughly - all components and shock absorbers will be tested for any distortion, any breaks or for excessive corrosion that could affect your vehicle.

Did you know that almost 10% of MOT fails are because of the brakes? During a test, the overall condition would be checked and a brake performance test will be carried out to test brake efficiency.

As would be expected, the exhaust and fuel and emissions will also be checked and the tester will make sure that all seatbelts are working correctly. The whole body of the car will be inspected to ensure they have no excessive corrosion or any sharp edges.
