The Bristol Hotel Review Bristol

The Bristol Hotel is a chic hotel, situated on the waterfront area of Bristol, close to the At-Bristol science museum, Bristol Hippodrome theatre and a 20-minute walk from Cabot's Circus. On a trip to the area recently we were invited to review the hotel on my blog and report back to my readers.



I remember visiting the hotel a few years ago and was excited to go back. Memories of modern rooms with a touch of luxury and a fabulous restaurant overlooking the waterfront were still fresh in my memory. It would be good to see if it had changed. 

If you are coming by car, parking is easy as the hotel has a multi-story car park next door. Take a ticket and get it validated by the hotel to park for £5 for 24 hours. A bargain in the centre of a popular and busy city like Bristol.

Check in was by Javier, who was very efficient and pleasant. When he offered us a warm towel to wipe our hands, I thought I was back in Dubai! Flavoured water was also available free of charge in reception and was so refreshing, a sparkling concoction of apples, cranberries, and elderflower, delicious!



Our room wasn't ready but they offered us a room on the third floor with a view of the harbourfront area, and of course, we agreed! If you book directly through them you get a priority upgrade too so that is good to know.

The decor was fresh, modern and with a pop of bright pink,  I loved it! This deluxe room was well appointed with complimentary bottled water, a Nespresso machine, safe, iron and ironing board and hairdryer. I was really pleased to see robes and slippers as you don’t get these all the time. There is nothing nicer than relaxing in a fluffy soft robe whilst watching tv in a hotel ( eating chocolate is optional).

Room service options 

The room service options sounded really tasty. From light options such as soup of the day to healthy superfood salads to British classics like burgers, fish and chips and steak, there were options for everyone.  I liked the sound of West Country cheeses with crackers, cider and apple chutney. Great to see that the Bristol Hotel uses local food producers, bravo!



The bathroom was compact and bijou, but everything was in excellent condition and modern. The toiletries were excellent quality too being from the Temple Spa brand. Good to see a bath and a shower.





It was great to see a safe in the room, which I feel is an essential these days. I also appreciated the note that was left encouraging you to conserve resources - if you did not want to change towels every day, just let the staff know.

So after a freshen up, we went down to the hotel bar for a drink and a meal.

As we waited for the lift we spotted a cool seating cream leather seating area. I bet many a guest has sat there after a glass of wine waiting for the lift to arrive.

So down to the lounge. The lounge area was designed in muted shades of beige, cream and browns and felt very restful and somewhere good to relax.

The bar area was very smart and the drinks selection were decent.  My eyes were immediately drawn to the cocktails. I mean it would be rude not to have one, wouldn't it? So we ordered a Pinacolada and a Margarita. The Pinacolada was fruity and rich, but the creaminess came from the creamed coconut not cream, so good if you are avoiding dairy.  Mr W enjoyed his Margarita, which can be hard to get right, having the right mix of sweetness, sourness and salt. Peanuts and some sort of delicious chilli crackers were provided complimentary. So far so good. 

As we sat and relaxed we spotted a piano, but Mr W resisted a round of She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain on the old ivories, best keep that one until later!

After our drinks, we went down to the beautiful River Grille restaurant. 

The River Grille restaurant has a fabulous view of the waterfront area and we were seated right by the window.  To be honest every table has a great view of the waterfront area though! The restaurant was relatively quiet as it was a Sunday night but it still had a cool vibe.



The menu that evening was, for want of a better word, a mix of 'posh' dishes such as sea trout fillet with roasted cauliflower and salsa verde and comforting British classics such as sirloin steak and fish and chips.

Two dishes that caught my eye were the duck breast with savoy cabbage, crushed new potatoes and port sauce and the slow-cooked lamb shank with colcannon, romanesco broccoli, beets and jus, both at £18. I have an issue with mashed potatoes after being served cold mash at school so colcannon may have been one mash too far. I selected the lamb however they kindly substituted crushed new potatoes instead of the colcannon.  Mr W went for the Jasper grilled chicken breast with Jerusalem artichokes, rainbow carrots, beets and jus also priced at £18. But firstly our starters -  scallops and tomato and basil soup.

The scallops were presented exceptionally well and tasted fantastic. On a bed of carrot and ginger puree, the combination of flavours really brought out the sweetness of the scallops, and the ginger wasn't overpowering.  A drizzle of lemon oil added a freshness to the dish and the seared crust was well executed. If I was being picky though I would have liked an extra scallop as they were so delicious!

The tomato and basil soup had a hint of heat that added an extra kick. Served with fresh soda bread and Welsh butter it tasted homemade but had a refined edge that you get with restaurant style cooking.

Then onto the mains.

The slow-cooked lamb shank was divine and really well cooked so the meat fell off the bone, and the crushed new potatoes were incredibly well seasoned, and buttery.  The dish was a generous portion so if you love lamb and are hungry I would definitely recommend it. My only criticism of this dish is that the Romanesco broccoli was a little underdone for me as it was very al dente.

Mr W's Jasper chicken was pan fried so it gained a scrumptious crispy skin and was set on a plate of interesting vegetables such as cooked beetroot and artichoke. The jus added a nice richness and sweetness to the dish and it was not overly heavy on the stomach. A well prepared and well cooked dish.


Could we manage desserts? Of course! Mr W managed to squeeze in a lemon meringue pie for dessert and I was tempted by the chocolate and raspberry bombe. 

The lemon meringue pie had a crisp pastry case with a creamy sharp lemon custard filling and a soft meringue top. A good lemon meringue pie, the meringue was slightly under done but good all the same.


I asked the waitress for a recommendation for dessert and was advised that the chocolate and raspberry bombe was amazing so I was really looking forward to it.  When the chocolate bombe arrived it was definitely a WOW moment! A crisp white chocolate shell was presented on the plate, and I watched tentatively as the waitress dribbled warm sweet milk chocolate sauce over the dish.


As she did the chocolate shell melted and inside oozed out a decadent chocolate mousse. A further surprise was a raspberry jelly inside the shell, a lovely fruity flavour combination with the rich layers of chocolate. This was my favourite part of the meal and I think as an expert on desserts (Well I've eaten enough!) I can say it was an outstanding dessert, rich without being overindulgent, and extremely well presented. We decided to leave coffee and further drinks, as we were too full to eat another morsel. What did we think of the meal? An excellent meal, that was very near perfect.

Bed beckoned and after one of the most comfortable night's sleep in a long time, we stumbled down to breakfast the next morning. Breakfast was also served in the River Grille, and it was lovely to sit and watch the world go by on the waterfront whilst eating our breakfast.

Gregg serving us at breakfast was very personable and informed us it was a buffet breakfast, and after our toast and tea order, we eagerly went to check out the selection on offer.








The selection was everything you would expect in a hotel of this calibre and ranged from pastries and muffins, cereals, fresh fruit, meats, cheese and yoghurts and a hot breakfast served buffet style. I liked the fact that they had a 'juice of the day' which was rhubarb and other items you don't always get such as fresh smoothies, bircher muesli and soda bread were available.






The breakfast was excellent and we both enjoyed it very much. 


So with heavy hearts, it was time to leave the hotel and check out.

The Bristol Hotel is a very good four-star hotel on the waterfront area of Bristol, with an excellent restaurant. The deluxe room was well appointed and the staff were personable and very well trained. It's classy and chic without being stuffy. With room rates starting at £96 a night for a double room I feel for a city centre hotel of this standard it is very well priced too. Would we stay again? Most definitely and we honestly can't wait to go back. Highly recommended.

Las Iguanas Review Cardiff

Las Iguanas is a Mexican restaurant chain that you can find in most major cities. You may have spotted one near you and wondered if you should visit. Read on to find out why you should. 


I was invited to review Las Iguanas in Cardiff's Mill Lane, but as always my opinions are honest and reflect the experience I have and the food I eat.

Now, honestly, I like Mexican food but sometimes, well, it looks all the same, wraps with or without refried beans, baked or fried with a sauce. Now I am sorry if I have disrespected your favourite cuisine, but you must know what I mean! So it was interesting to see what food they had on offer at Las Iguanas.

Ollie our server was pleasant, accommodating. He whizzed through the main menu with us and the lunch time offerings too, patiently responding to my questions and queries. One thing I picked up on quickly was the Happy Hour menu with 2 for 1 cocktails and coolers every day.  Now I love a good cocktail but as it was lunch time I decided to order a raspberry cooler - well two raspberry coolers for the price of one. Mr W ordered a coke, he is a creature of habit.



As you can see I couldn't wait to try the raspberry cooler, it was sweet without being too sweet, refreshing and perfect for a warm day, the raspberry really came through in the flavour. A good start.

The menu

There is a lunch menu and the main A La Carte menu. The lunch menu is served until 6.30pm every day and is made up of smaller starters at £2.95 and normal sized main meals between £7.50 and £9.50.

The A La Carte menu is available at all times throughout the day. So if you visiting at lunchtime and wanted to mix and match dishes off both menus you could. Prices for starters on the A La Carte menu are from £4.95 to £7.50, and main courses are from £10 to £17.50, the latter price is for the steak.



Highlights of the main menu were 'taco planks' - grilled soft corn & flour tortillas topped with your choice of filling &  fresh taco slaw, as well as a wide range of tapas including empanadas, quesadillas, nachos and chicken wings. You can also find Mexican classics such as burritos, fajitas and enchiladas, a selection of burgers with a South American twist and Cuban sandwiches and steaks. 

Vegetarians are well looked after with a wide selection of inventive dishes including sweet potato, butternut squash & chickpea chilli chimichanga and halloumi churrasco skewers.

The food

We ordered off the lunch menu, I ordered a lamb empanada, and then the beef chilli, Mr W the nachos and then the chicken burritos.

The lamb empanada was scrumptious, a crispy little pasty, hid a filling of lightly spiced lamb and onions in a tasty tomato based sauce. It came with a sweet salsa, which was great as a dipping sauce. What was impressive was the fact that the pastry was light and non-greasy and yet still crisp - no sogginess here. This smaller size portion was from the lunch menu if you have a large appetite I would suggest you order a starter from the A La Carte menu.




Mr W's nachos were yummy. Crispy tortillas, softening slightly under melted cheese with a decent portion of sour cream, guacamole and salsa. A good solid portion of nachos, again from the lunch menu, so a smaller portion and not overwhelming.

Mr W enjoyed his burritos - the chicken was mixed with refried beans, spicy but not too spicy he said. The guacamole, sour cream and tomato salsa was tasty but fairly standard, what you would expect really. What was great was the salad served with it that added some freshness and lightness to the dish.

Beef chilli

Now onto the beef chilli. I will say this and I will say this only once, this is one of the best chilis I have ever had. Why? Well, it was so flavorful, the beef was chunky and tender, the gravy rich, dark, and tasty. I could really imagine someone's mum from Peru, simmering it on the stove gently, stirring it and looking after it, really nurturing the dish.

It is served with a topping of chilli butter, adjusted to your heat and this added that perfect touch.

The spring onion rice was layered in the bottom of the bowl with the chilli on top. I liked how you had to dig deep into the bottom to get to the yummy rice, it really added an authentic touch.

The chilli also came with a chunk of warm cornbread, which was great to mop up the juices and had a hint of lime and jalapeno. This was one hearty chilli for sure.

Feeling as if we were going to explode we sadly left dessert. I did, however, browse the menu and can assure you dessert lovers among you wouldn't be disappointed, from the Aztec chocolate fudge cake to a delicious sounding creamy caramel cake there were some scrumptious sounding desserts on the menu.



I personally feel Las Iguanas is a great choice when you went Mexican food, their ethos is super and refreshingly simple - they want to bring authentic South American food to your table. They pride themselves on using the freshest ingredients and I feel it really shows in their food - every day they make over 30 sauces and salsas fresh by hand in their kitchens.

We would definitely return, I mean, how could I not after that chilli? With 2 for 1 cocktails and coolers, a well-priced lunch menu, authentic tasty South American food and super efficient service, Las Iguanas is carving out a well-respected niche on our high street. Recommended.

Rickshaw Restaurant At The Corinthia Hotel Budapest

Recently on our stay at the Corinthia Hotel Budapest we were lucky enough to be invited to review their Rickshaw restaurant.

The Corinthia Hotel Budapest is a 5-star hotel set on a bustling high street in the centre of the city. The hotel is an iconic hotel, being there since 1896, and was the inspiration for the film The Grand Budapest Hotel.



When we entered the restaurant we were shown to out table by Brigette. Brigette knew we were coming and had our reservation so we were seated quickly and given a menu before we even had a chance to look around. Excellent!



The restaurant serves food that is a fusion of eastern cuisine from across the Orient. The theme of the restaurant reflects this being decorated with buddhas, orchids and middle eastern symbols. An elegant but authentic eastern decor.

We ordered a bottle of the house white, a Chardonnay which was fresh with flavours of lychees and gooseberries and a bottle of still water whilst we examined the menu.

The menu contains classics like Peking Duck, and Teriyaki Pork, to more unusual items such as Rendang Buaya Katak, which is Rendang style crocodile. We ordered from the menu and while we waited Brigette brought us prawn crackers with a peanut sauce. The prawn crackers were crispy, light and non-greasy and the peanut sauce was tasty, but perhaps could have done with a little spice. We were given warm towels to wipe our hands after our prawn crackers which were a lovely touch.



As we waited for our starters we discussed the menu. We thought the prices were good for a restaurant in a 5-star hotel but were obviously higher than the average Budapest restaurant, being between 2900HUF to 6400HUF, which is about £8 to £18 without side orders of rice or noodles.

After a short wait, our starters were brought to us. I had scallops with poppadums and my husband had the Asian style chicken salad.  




As you can see the scallops were beautifully presented. The scallops were nestled on a bed of grated carrot and were surrounded by a light mayonnaise dressing and the plate was decorated with wasabi drops and a spicy red sauce. I really enjoyed the carrot salad mixed with the sauces. The scallops were very lightly browned and I feel they could have been cooked just that little bit more and the poppadoms were a little soggy. Still great flavours. 



MR W has a lovely Asian salad which was fresh and tasty. The chicken was browned and the shredded vegetables had a lovely crunch, with peanuts adding even more texture. Wasabi peanuts also added a bit of a kick at the end. A very nutritious and healthy dish. 




After a short break, the main courses were brought over - Massaman beef curry and jasmine rice for myself and Kung Po chicken and stir fry noodles for Mr W.

The Massaman curry tasted delicious, the sauce was very authentic, rich thick and tasty, the beef tender and the sweet potatoes added a great flavour. If I was being extra picky it was a little sweeter than similar dishes I have had in the past, probably due ti the addition of the sweet potato.

The jasmine rice which accompanied the dish was similar to sticky rice and was very pleasant.

Mr W really rated the Kung Po chicken. The chicken was in a sticky and spicy sauce with onions and bamboo shoots. Accompanying the dish was stir-fry noodles which were well seasoned with soy sauce.



We ordered stir fry Asian vegetables but unfortunately the waitress forgot these but was very apologetic when we reminded her and they then were quickly brought. The Asian vegetables were a mix of Chinese mushrooms, broccoli, bamboo shoots and other vegetables in a light soy sauce with ginger and a hint of garlic. The vegetables were al dente and still had some crunch and the sauce was similar to an authentic Cantonese style sauce. Personally, I felt this was the best dish being extra flavourful and the vegetables being perfectly cooked.

The food was plentiful and delicious so I wasn't sure if I could manage a dessert but the lure of a green tea Mille Feuille persuaded me.




When it came the dessert was elegant and beautiful, presented on a black plate. The Mille Feuille, which is a French dessert of layers of flaky puff pastry with a cream filling, had an extra twist with the green tea flavoured cream. The sesame seed coated ice cream which it was served with, added a nutty crunch

When browsing the menu I noticed that the Corinthia hotel chain make a point of having a "Food For Thought' section on their menu. This is designed in conjunction with a nutritional therapist to provide fresh vitamin packed options which they say increase mental alertness. I loved this idea, as, especially if you eat out often, or if you are watching your weight, you may want a healthier menu choice.

Rickshaw restaurant is a restaurant that is worth visiting if you enjoy Far Eastern cuisine. Whilst not everything was perfect, the food, on the whole, was delicious, the starters and desserts particularly served with finesse and was a feast for the eyes. Perhaps a little thought on the presentation of the mains would have made the courses even more enticing. Service was efficient and although the prices were on the high side, you must remember you are in a 5-star hotel. 

Mr W and I both enjoyed our meal and would return. Recommended 4 out of 5 stars.

The Corinthia Hotel Review Budapest

A few years ago I was lucky enough to have afternoon tea at the Corinthia Hotel in London. This stunning five-star hotel right in the centre of London has a beautiful foyer, impeccable service and left a lasting impression on me. So when my husband and I decided to take a short break to Budapest and Vienna recently for his birthday, there was only one hotel to stay in, the five-star Corinthia Hotel, Budapest. 

The Corinthia Hotel Budapest is an iconic Budapest hotel, originally opened in 1896 and being THE place to stay for famous people including movie stars and dignitaries. You may have heard about it as it was the inspiration for the Wes Anderson film The Grand Budapest Hotel.

As we arrived at the hotel the door staff warmly welcomed us, took our bags and showed us where to check in.

As you can see the foyer of the hotel is genuinely beautiful with marble everywhere, a grand staircase, and elegant design. My husband and I both thought the hotel had that WOW factor as we walked in.

We were checked in quickly and shown to our room by efficient and pleasant staff.

The room was the standard room but did feel quite small. The bathroom had a marble sink and was nicely appointed with both shower and bath. The decor was muted beiges and browns and the room had a mini bar, phone, and complimentary water. Whilst it was fine for our needs I guess it didn't live up to our the expectations, especially after seeing the beauty of the rest of the hotel, but I'm probably being very picky here.

We decided to have a wander of the hotel then and explore more.

The Brasserie and Atrium restaurant

The public areas of the hotel are large and are divided by two glass atriums which give the building lots of light, and the height also adds to the grandeur of the hotel. The attention to detail was amazing, the tables for dinner were set up with precision with white tablecloths, high-quality tableware and napkins that were folded 'just so'.

There are a number of restaurants in the hotel including the Brassiere and Atrium, The Rickshaw restaurant and Bock Bistro. 

The Brasserie and Atrium serves an extensive buffet breakfast, as well as dinner and Sunday lunch, I heard the breakfast was excellent but didn't have the chance to try it out. 

The Bock Bistro serves tapas style food, a mix of Hungarian and Spanish dishes. This restaurant was awarded a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin guide for affordable well-priced food that is carefully cooked and prepared.  We tried to get a table last minute for the Bock Bistro but they didn't have a reservation available, our fault for not planning well enough in advance!

The Rickshaw restaurant serves Far Eastern cuisine and we were lucky to be offered the chance to review a meal there.

You can read about it on my blog soon! The service by Brigitte was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for her. The food was cooked well and presentation of the starters and desserts were exceptional.

Le Bar

Le Bar is the main hotel bar which is stylishly decorated. We had drinks here a couple of times during our stay and the staff was professional, service was quick but drinks were expensive especially for Budapest. The cocktail we had was 3200 HUF, which is around £10. You are in a 5-star hotel, though, just budget for drinks if you like a nice glass of wine or cocktail or two.

They have live music in the bar in the evening. I was serenaded by a violinist one night, which was a lovely touch, and they also had a pianist there another night. It makes for a nice ambiance when you are having a drink and they play a combination of classical, jazz and modern songs like Abba and the Beatles, so something for everyone really.

I kept one the best parts of the hotel until last, the spa and pool area. This area which is over 1000m2 boasts a dedicated fitness room, saunas, steam bath and jacuzzi. Again the beauty of the pool and spa area makes it a joy to use the facilities. My photo doesn't really do it justice.

This trip was part of our Budapest and Vienna vacation that we booked with British Airways. Flights, 3 nights accommodation in The Corinthia Hotel Budapest and 3 nights accommodation at The Guest House Vienna came to £600 per person for two.

Standard rates at The Corinthia Hotel Budapest start at 99 Euros a night. When you think that you could easily pay four times that for a stay at The Corinthia Hotel London, you can see, for a five-star hotel, that it is a complete bargain if you get the right price. 

The public areas are stunningly beautiful, and we felt, we were so lucky to be able to stay in such a historic hotel. Twice a week they do a free tour of the hotel where they talk about the history of this grand hotel. The facilities are excellent, with the spa area being particularly great. If we went back again we would upgrade to a better room, as the standard room did not have that WOW factor and was small in size.  


In summary, we would definitely return and feel that for a five-star hotel you get tremendous value for money. Just bring extra cash for the drinks! Highly recommended.
