5 Whisky Cocktails For Summer

With summer heating up, we’re finally at one of the best times of the year – the season of sipping cocktails on the patio! While whisky is known for its ability to warm you up after a few sips, after all, we all love a good Christmas whisky, when mixed into a refreshing cocktail, it can actually be the perfect option during the sunnier months of the year.

So, trade in your Old Fashioned for one of these summertime sips and pour yourself a perfect accompaniment for barbeques and alfresco dining!

Bourbon Sweet Tea

It’s sometimes a little too warm to enjoy a hot beverage in the summer months, so this American twist on our beloved hot brew can act as the perfect way to sate your tea cravings – made all the better with a big splash of whiskey, of course!

You Will Need:

750ml of water
250ml of Bourbon
100g of sugar
2 black tea bags
1 lemon, sliced or in small wedges
½ orange, sliced or in small wedges

To Make:

  1. Add the water and sugar to a small saucepan and boil, stirring to ensure the sugar dissolves.
  2. Pop the tea bags into a jug and pour the hot sugar water in, leaving the tea to steep for around five minutes.
  3. Remove the tea bags and add in the slices of lemon and orange to impart some extra flavour into the mix!
  4. Pour the Bourbon in and give the drink a good stir.
  5. Cover the jug and leave to chill until the liquid has cooled down.
  6. Serve over ice, garnished with a slice of lemon, for a refreshing drink.

 Honey Whisky Lemonade

Add a sweet twist to your favourite whisky with this summery special. Perfect for entertaining, this recipe will give you enough syrup to make around ten drinks – if you’re up for a bartending feat!

You Will Need:

125ml of water
6tbsp of honey
2 sprigs of fresh herbs (basil or mint are best!)
125ml of lemonade per drink

  1. Add the water and honey to a small saucepan and bring to the boil.
  2. Reduce the heat and pop in a sprig of herbs, leaving the mixture to simmer for around 15 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat and leave it to cool for 15 minutes.
  4. In each glass, pour a shot of whisky over ice and top off with lemonade.
  5. Stir one teaspoon worth of the honey syrup into the drink and garnish with a slice of lemon, or a couple of herb leaves before serving.

To Make:

  1. Brew the green tea and then leave it to cool.
  2. In a tall glass, mix the whisky with 60ml of green tea.
  3. Top the drink off with soda water and serve.

Add a fresh and fruity twist to your drink with this simple summer whisky recipe! Raspberries are a great summer berry, coming into season in July and August, so you should have your pick of fresh, local fruit!

You Will Need:

45ml of whisky
15ml of raspberry liqueur
120ml of ginger ale
A squeeze of lime juice
Fresh raspberries to garnish

To Make:

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice and pour over the whisky and raspberry liqueur.
  2. Squeeze in a good dash of lime juice.
  3. Top the drink up with ginger ale.
Serve with a couple of raspberries as garnish.

Cranberry and Orange Cocktail

A simple recipe for a fruity and refreshing sip perfect for a summer’s day!

You Will Need:

60ml of whisky
15ml of Cointreau

Cool Cocktails For The Festive Season

Do you love a tipple at Christmas time? I love to indulge in a festive drink with family and friends over Yuletide and have a selection of cocktail recipes I keep going back to. I love hosting Christmas get-togethers and meeting up at my friends' parties too. I also love to attend local Christmas events where I may indulge in a cocktail or two too. Here are some cool cocktails you can try this festive season.

Mulled Wine For A Taste Of Christmas

Let’s start with perhaps one of the most festive drinks you can get - mulled wine! Well, technically not a cocktail as it has no spirits in it, its just the most festive drink you can get, usually made with red wine and various mulling spices! I often enjoy it when looking around Christmas markets. If you want a winter warmer drink, then mulled wine might be the one for you.

Eggnog For Everyone

The other festive tipple we all enjoy, eggnog is always a popular choice. A rich, chilled and sweetened dairy-based beverage, some people really love it and some absolutely hate it! Traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, whipped egg whites and egg yolks, it occasionally contains some distilled spirits such as brandy, rum, whisky or bourbon. I don’t mind an eggnog over Christmas but it isn’t my tipple of choice.

Make Mine A Martini

Perhaps the coolest and most chic cocktail on this list, the Martini is a popular choice in my house. We always have some gin on hand, whether it be a full-size bottle or a collection of miniatures like what Just Miniatures have to offer. A gin martini is one of my favourite cocktails. Containing gin, vermouth and a zest of lemon, it is absolutely delicious and something I will certainly be enjoying this year.

The Classic Mojito

Ask everyone to name a cocktail and a mojito will often come up high in the list. It is a cocktail that plenty of people enjoy and consists of five ingredients - white rum, sugar, lime juice, soda and mint. It is a super popular drink during the summer but it can also be enjoyed during winter too. This is the perfect cocktail to introduce people to cocktails if they haven’t really had one before - they are flavourful and refreshing.

Mimosa In The Morning

A mimosa is the perfect choice for Christmas morning. It is composed of one part champagne and one part chilled citrus juice, usually orange juice. You’ll often find this served at weddings but this is also a popular choice when it comes to Christmas Day breakfasts. Many people don’t really eat a proper breakfast on Christmas Day due to the large meal they will be consuming just a few hours later but they might enjoy some light food and a mimosa each. You may have seen it has become the official drink of brunch!

These are my recommended cocktails for the festive season but you may have others you prefer. With all the Christmas parties and events coming up, it is guaranteed that there will be cocktails flowing aplenty - what will you be drinking?

A Selection Of Summer Drinks Perfect For Any Occasion

Not sure what to serve at a summer barbeque or to drink while watching Wimbledon? This selection of alcoholic and virgin summer drinks are great ideas!

1. Punch

Punch is a natural choice for a summer party, as it looks delightful, tastes refreshing, and can be prepared in advance. Choose rum for a taste of the tropics, sangria for a flavour of Spain (you can even make a version with white wine) - or use whatever you have in the house. Make the punch less potent by adding ice cubes or watering it down with sparkling water. Non-alcoholic versions can also be made, with fruit juices, ginger ale, slices of fruit - it's a great way of using up a glut of summer fruit like strawberries or raspberries. Do be careful to label which is which though, so that people don't drink alcohol by mistake. You should also make sure that the drinks are supervised at all times so that anyone who is underage doesn't help themselves.

2. Champagne cocktails

Champagne is a refreshing celebratory drink but also makes interesting cocktails. that will impress your guests. You won't need to stock up on lots of different spirits; some use spirits like vodka, that you may already have lying around. Other recipes use fruit, which will add a pleasant flavour to the cocktails, as well as mitigating the effect of the alcohol! Champagne doesn't need to be expensive, especially when you're using it for cocktails, but if you want to use a quality brand you can save money by searching for champagne offers. Find the right offer, and you can pick up a case of champagne at a substantial discount - it's a good way to cater for a party or event while keeping the budget reasonable.

3. Cordials

Some of your guests will most likely not be drinking, perhaps because they are driving or because they simply don't care for alcohol. It's also sensible to avoid drinking too much alcohol in hot weather, as it will dehydrate you. Cordials are a delightful way to enjoy summer flavours, the classic one being elderflower; homemade ones will be the tastiest. Add wine or champagne to make an alcoholic version.

4. Iced Tea

Another delicious and refreshing drink in the summer is iced tea. There's a reason it's so popular in the southern US! With the vast range of herbal teas now on offer, there are almost infinite possibilities for iced tea; herbal teas are also excellent if you prefer to avoid caffeine. As with many non-alcoholic drinks, you can make an alcoholic version - though guests should be cautious about overdoing it, as it's easy to knock back such drinks simply because they are so refreshing.

5. Lassi

This yoghurt-based drink will also keep your guests cool. It is popular in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan, all very hot regions. Lassi can be made in sweet or savoury versions. Mango is perhaps the best-known flavour, which you'll often find in Indian restaurants, but you can also make it with rosewater, strawberries, papaya, spices … why not experiment to see what you can invent?

Let me know your favourite summer drinks.

How To Make A Sex On The Beach Cocktail

With Valentine's day just around the corner, you may be thinking of what to cook for your partner and that perfect meal. You may want to make a sophisticated creation washed down with an excellent Sauvignon Blanc or you may go fun and frivolous and complete the meal with a heart dessert and her favourite cocktail like Sex On The Beach.

The first Sex On The Beach cocktail was created in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in the 80's when a bartender wanted to create a fun drink for those celebrating Spring Break. If you are wondering why the name, the crazier the name the more likely people will order it in the cocktail game.

It's one of those cocktails that is super simple, easy to make, and colourful. Perfect for those that like their cocktails sweet with refreshing and dare I say it innocent. It's not sophisticated but it is delicious.

This cocktail is one of those cocktails that will take you back to that fabulous holiday in the sun, you know the one, where you sipped cocktails by the pool, where the food was so fresh and delicious it was amazing and you felt the most relaxed you have ever been.

How To Make A Sex On The Beach

2 measures of Vodka
1/2 measure of black raspberry Liqueur such as Chambord
1/2 measure of butterscotch Schnapps such as Teichenne
1 1/2 measures of freshly squeezed orange juice

orange slice and a cherry to garnish

Method

1. In a tall highball glass, add all the ingredients, stir and top with ice.

To buy all the spirits needed for Sex On The Beach,  head over the 31 Dover and buy it all online, with no need to carry heavy bottles home from the supermarket. With quick delivery and a price match promise, you get the best prices on alcohol delivered to your doorstep at one click of a button.

Tell me do you order your drinks online? What's your favourite cocktail?

Get The Party Started With An Old Fashioned Cocktail And 31Dover.com

I have to admit I like a nice cocktail, though over the years my tastes have changed. When I was young a Pinacolada was my go-to cocktail, all sweet and coconutty and made with rum . Now I'm older I am more of a whiskey or tequila based cocktail girl. A Margarita is one of my favourites, made with tequila, the sharpness of the lime and the crusty glass rim dipped in salt makes it a satisfying drink, especially when that strong tequila base hits the spot.

I'm also a fan of bourbon and specifically Jack Daniel's whiskey. Last March on a tour of the American 'Deep South' we ventured to the Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg, Tennesse. It was interesting to learn the history of the drink and to see how the whiskey was made. The Jack Daniel's distillery has made a range of whiskey from Tennessee spring water for the last 150 years. The classic Jack Daniel's No 7 has an earthy wood flavour, purified by going through a charcoal distillation process and has an edgy warmth as it goes down. It's a great base for whiskey cocktails or is delicious on it's on in a chilled glass with ice.

The Party Starter set £55 from 31 Dover

So when I was thinking of what spirits to buy for Christmas my thought went immediately to whiskey, tequila, and a spirit like a vodka that will take on the flavour of most mixers. A 'Party Starter' pack from 31Dover.com has exactly that in the package and is great for recreating delicious cocktails.

31Dover.com is an award-winning online drinks merchant selling a wide range of alcohol including champagne, wine, spirits, craft beers, cider, and liqueurs. Based at 31 Dover Street in London in 2015 it was named the Best Online Drinks Retailer by the industry's Drinks Business Awards.

The Party Starter pack features Russian standard vodka, Jose Cuervo tequila and Jack Daniel’s whiskey to kick start your house party celebrations. All you need is some orange juice, cola, any other mixers you may like and lashings of ice, and of course, you can always drink neat!

Now a drink I tried recently is a bourbon based cocktail called an Old Fashioned. The name was first coined at the Pendennis Club, a gentlemen's club founded in 1881 in Louisville, Kentucky. It's a simple straight forward cocktail, made with bourbon, sugar, bitters, lots of ice and a twist of orange rind. In my recipe below I am adding a little variation to this with Angostura orange bitters, not normal bitters. These orange bitters available from 31Dover.com adds a lovely flavour to the cocktail.

An Old Fashioned with a Twist

Ingredients

1 sugar cube or 1/2 teaspoon of sugar
2-3 dashes of Angostura orange bitters
2 measures of whiskey or bourbon
plenty of ice
1 orange
cocktail cherry (optional)

Method

1. Put the sugar in a tumbler with a teaspoon of hot water.
2. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then add the bitters.
3. Add the whiskey.
4. Stir well.
5. Add ice, and give it another stir
6. Get an orange and take a strip of orange peel off carefully with a sharp knife
7. It's important not to have any of the white pith on the orange as this can be bitter.
8. Rub the edge of the glass with the peel then twist the peel and pop it into the glass.
9. Add a cocktail cherry on a stick if you have one.
10. Sit back and enjoy like Jon Hamm in Mad Men.

31 Dover is brilliant for getting hard to find items like Angostura orange bitters

I li
ve in a small seaside town and I can't get many of the most unusual items to make cocktails, such as Angostura orange bitters, so a site like 31Dover.com is really useful to me. I couldn't find this anywhere so I actually bought them from 31Dover.com, yes bloggers do buy things too! Flavoured from the fresh, sun-ripened peels of Trinidad's oranges, these orange bitters really add an orange zesty taste to any drink.

A site like 31Dover.com has great availability and can save you having to carry the heavy spirits or wine bottles home from a supermarket as well. It's a competitively priced site and perfect for all your alcoholic beverage needs.

With next day delivery as standard and a one-hour delivery option if you live in London, you can get the party started sooner than you think with 31 Dover.

What's your go-to cocktail? Would you use an online site to buy spirits, wine, beer and lager?

New Orleans Iconic Food And Drink

We recently visited New Orleans as part of our road trip around the 'mojo triangle', New Orleans, Memphis, and Nashville - the birthplace of jazz, blues, rock and roll and country music.

New Orleans is known for its food, from simple Po' Boy sandwiches to classic cocktails such as the Pimms Cup and more refined Creole and Cajun cuisine. In simple terms, Creole cuisine is referred to as city food whilst Cajun is more rustic country food.

These are some of the dishes that we tried in New Orleans, and specifically what New Orleans is known for.

Beignet

A beignet is a deep-fried doughnut. Served hot with lots of powdered sugar, they are generally plain with no jam and are well known as the iconic food at Cafe Du Monde and Cafe Beignet in the French Quarter, New Orleans.

Gumbo

Gumbo is a stew that originated in southern Louisiana during the 18th century. It consists of a flavoured stock thickened with a roux, meat such as chicken or andouille sausage, onions, peppers and celery and sometimes seafood. The gumbo above was a simple dish I ate at a cafe, more luxurious dishes are eaten in one of the many restaurants.

Sazerac

A Sazerac is a cocktail invented in New Orleans containing rye whiskey, bitters, and Absinthe. This Sazerac was drunk in the Monteleone hotel, famous for it's rotating carousel bar. Served quite strong you could really taste the whiskey in this cocktail.

Muffuletta

A muffuletta is a popular sandwich made of round flattened bread, similar to focaccia and filled with salami, ham, provolone cheese, and olive salad. Traditionally served cold, although many places will toast it for you, this is a total meal in a sandwich. The one shown above was half a whole muffuletta, so you can see how big they are.

Po' Boy

A Po' Boy is a submarine-type sandwich from Lousiana, served on bread similar to French Bread and consist of roast beef, chicken, ham or fried seafood. A "dressed" Po' boy has lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayonnaise. It is said this sandwich was invented when the New Orleans streetcar drivers went on strike in 1929 as an inexpensive sandwich of bits of leftover roast beef and gravy.

Shrimp And Grits

Shrimp and grits is a traditional dish from South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. Grits are made by boiling ground maize and is similar to porridge in consistency. A traditional breakfast dish grits are also served well seasoned and accompanied with shrimp as a main course for dinner in some of the finer restaurants. I had this dish in Mr. B's bistro, an excellent New Orleans restaurant known for it's refined Creole food.

Pimms Cup

A Pimms Cup, although invented in London in the 1800s, was brought to New Orleans by a restaurant and bar called the Napoleon House bar in the late 1940s. Consisting of Pimms No 1, lemonade, a lemon-lime soda such as 7 Up, lots of strawberries and topped with ice, it is very refreshing on a warm day garnished with cucumber.

For information on well-priced food when in NOLA check out this post, 10 Cheap Eats In New Orleans by 2foodtrippers and for some more recommendations Where To Eat In New Orleans Now by Lisa from LL World Tour.

These are some of the dishes we ate and drunk in New Orleans. Which would you try?

Summer Wine Cocktails

Summer is here and it's the time for holidays, sunsets and cocktails. Two of my favourite cocktails are a Bellini and a Kir Royal. A Kir Royal is so simple to make and you can't beat a glass of champagne and blackcurrant liqueur, served chilled.  I also love a good Bellini. I once went to Harry's Bar in Venice where the Bellini was invented. It's such an interesting place, very small, historic and full of real characters.

If you haven't tried a Bellini, I highly recommend it. A Bellini is a light and refreshing drink made with Prosecco and peach juice and is lovely and fruity.

To recreate a good summer cocktail at home, have a look at this infographic from Roberson Wine. I'm off to Spain in a couple of months and I'm looking forward to sharing a jug of Sangria, topped with fresh fruit, with my husband. It's like summer in a glass isn't it?

Tell me, do you have a favourite cocktail made with wine? Would you like to try any of the drinks above.

Dirty Martini - Cool Classy Cocktails in Covent Garden

I do love cocktails! Margaritas, Tequila Sunrises, Cosmopolitans, Mojitos ... all simply delicious. So when I was contacted to review a cocktail bar in Covent Garden I jumped at the chance.

Dirty Martini is one of those little secrets that only the insiders know. Hidden away in a basement on Covent Garden it's a tricky place to find but SOOO worth it. You can find this little gem in Covent Garden itself about 20 yards up from the Transport Museum.

Once you get into the cocktail bar, a nice relaxed vibe with classic pop tunes puts you at ease. As you can't see into the bar I didn't know what to expect but I shouldn't have worried. A New York style bar is surrounded by a smart crowd of mixed ages. Attentive staff provide table service or you can order drinks and nibbles at the bar yourself. The extensive drinks menu is full of well-loved classics such as Mojitos, Cosmopolitans, Daiquiris as well as a decent wine list, and their trademark selection of Martini's is something to be seen. Chocolate or Passion Fruit Martini anyone?

Snacks consist of sharing boards with a hot and cold selection and bar nibbles such as olives, flatbreads and sliders provide some sustenance whether you are up for partying all night or not.

So onto the drinks... We ordered from the Summer Nights Menu. This menu runs on a Thursday and is an incredibly well-priced menu of refreshing fruity classics - cocktails are all just £6. This is an excellent price point for the centre of London. The Berry Margarita was incredibly fresh and fruity. Fresh berries are shaken with tequila and Cointreau, with lime juice to cut through the sweetness, a sugar rim to the glass added a classy touch. A delightful summer drink.

My husband chose the Mandarin Iced Cooler. This was made of fresh mandarin juice, and peach puree with vodka and pear cognac. As my husband really enjoyed this long drink I decided to order it next. When mine came I thought it was very fruity but a little sweet for me - totally my fault as I like a more refreshing drink.

Stylish Interior

My husband then moved onto the Apple Pear Fizz. Fresh raspberries muddled with Absolute Vodka, lychee liqueur and fresh apple juice was topped with Prosecco. A thumbs up from us both on this one!

Apple Pear Fizz, Mandarin Iced Cooler and Berry Margarita

To compliment the drinks we had a sharing board off the Summer menu. This consisted of mini hamburgers, marinated tiger prawns, mini hot dogs with onions and vegetable and pesto kebabs. For a snack selection, it was the perfect accompaniment to the fruity cocktails.

Our service was quick, efficient. Never overcrowded it seems like only a select number of people were let in at any time, which made it a fabulous experience. I am not sure what it is like on the weekend but we really enjoyed it on the Bank Holiday Monday. You can also book an area from a link on their website, which is perfect for large groups and parties.

What's especially great about Dirty Martini is that they have a selection of special offers on a weekly basis. Happy hour is Mon-Thurs 5pm -10pm, Fri and Sat 5pm-8pm and Sun all day. Half price martinis, Prosecco cocktails and bottles of wine as well as other offers make this a steal if you are in the area.

If you can't make it to Covent Garden they also have branches at Hanover Square and Bishopsgate, all in London. Let's hope they expand countrywide soon, I know that Cardiff could do with a classy cocktail bar, hope you are listening Dirty Martini!
