Meet The Bloggers - Charlotte From The Social Snob

Today in my Meet The Bloggers series I am interviewing Charlotte from The Social Snob blog.

Can you tell my readers about yourself and your blog.

My name is Charlotte and I blog over at www.thesocialsnob.com, which is mostly known for the high-end / luxury beauty products I review on it. Although I am a mother of two young children I decided not to branch out into Parent Blogging as I like to keep them off-line and separate from what I do. My passion is make-up, I’m a hoarder and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Sometimes I just want that £60 lipstick for it’s outer packaging even if the product isn’t as good as it could be. I am quite materialistic in that way, but I do cherish the things money cant buy in life and that would be the reaction to my children's faces when we go some where new or just go an be silly at the park

What inspired you to start blogging?

I was scrolling my Facebook at the end of 2013 and came across a very successful beauty blogger, I’m not sure how but it was love at first sight, everything she was doing I thought 'I want this and I can do these kind of things' - So I did and the rest was history!! I have also been a beauty junkie and work colleagues would ask me what make-up I was wearing or how I achieved certain looks or even what the best kind of skincare for skin issues. So it’s always been in the air I just didn’t know I could also make a career out of it

Tell me your proudest blogging achievement.

I’ll admit I do have so many, I pinch myself everyday when the postman brings me at least four parcels. It might have been when Tom Ford sent me some of the most cult beauty products from the collection, being able to work with brands that I could never even afford before or even used to just obsess over how fabulous they were and now they look to me for my opinion it blows my mind. I have been nominated for blogging awards which to just be recognised is an achievement in it self

What brands have you enjoyed working with?

Touching on the above, I don’t think I could narrow it down, I have been lucky enough to work with some of the world's biggest beauty brands and I count myself so lucky for that

What brands would you like to work with in the future?

Ahhh these questions !! I would just like to maintain a good relationship with all the current brands I am working with, as well as hopefully working with CHANEL, DIOR, GIVINCHEY

Do you have any tips for new bloggers?

It’s hard on new bloggers, I really had no clue this world of bloggers existed and it’s grown a whole lot since i started too!! I think anyone that does want to begin blogging shouldn’t compare their beginning to someone else middle. They should understand what they want from it from the get go, if that’s a career or if they are doing it as a hobby. They shouldn’t be put off if they are turned down for opportunities. The best example of that is a beauty box brand approached me to work with them, the first month came and so did my review, I had to promote a ‘code’ for my readers to use and no one used it, the brand ignored my emails for 3 months after. They eventually replied to tell me that I basically wasn’t good enough but then 2 or so months later they were trying to get me back on board. They had seen my following had grown a lot in a short space of time and all of a sudden I was good enough again - you can imagine I politely told them where to go !!!

What is your most popular blog post to date?

It is definitely my blog post for Flawless Cosmetics, it still is my most read post every day, cosmetic procedures are a tricky one but people also love to see the transformation gives. I think it’s my favourite because of how much confidence this beauty procedure gave me. Holly is a fantastic aesthetic practitioner and it’s been a pleasure to see her business basically go viral.

Do you have any specific blog and personal goals for 2016?

I would like to see The Social Snob being read / talked about in Wales. Wales / South Wales lacks very far behind in the beauty industry and it makes me crazy to think there are so many talented people in Wales that are missing out on such fantastic opportunities because we aren’t as forward thinking (when it comes to beauty) than England and the rest of the world. If people ask what I do and say I’m a beauty blogger people don’t understand it, they don’t understand how much more powerful our opinions are compared to journalists. Our readers rely on our honesty and that's what some journalists lack and it’s also why we are trusted so much more. I would definitely like to see more blogging things going on in Wales - I would love to be able to change peoples ways when it comes to beauty in Wales but that just might be a bit too big for me - hahaha.

Meet The Bloggers - Joy From Pink Oddy

Today I am interviewing Joy from the blog Pink Oddy in my Meet The Bloggers series.

Can you tell my readers about yourself and your blog.

My name is Joy and I am married with 4 boys. My blog really started out as place to try and help others whilst encouraging me to spend more time doing productive things with my children (even if that is just getting them outdoors and off their tech).

What inspired you to start blogging?

Justin Bieber. He followed me on Twitter and I saw the massive impact that the internet can have. I got 4 times as many followers in a week and thought that I should harness blogging and social media to share knowledge that may be of benefit to others.

Tell me your proudest blogging achievement.

Just hearing that I am helping. I have had my blog featured in the local National Autism Society e-mail.

What brands have you enjoyed working with?

A lot of brands are really good and I have enjoyed working with them, it would be unfair to single any out as I may forget others. But I do appreciate the ones that go the extra mile or really take them the time to share my content.

What brands would you like to work with in the future?

Any that will help myself and my family further develop our health and fitness because that is where I am at. I actually do have a brand who have just given me an e-mail address to contact them.

Do you have any tips for new bloggers?

Don’t believe all you read. Not all bloggers are honest as others. Why this is important is you need to just be confident with yourself and not compare yourself.

What is your most popular blog post to date?

It is a post about why you should book a Sun Holiday in January - which also goes into the whether they are worth it, or if there’s a cheaper way for people to book.

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

It was one about teeth brushing on my Sensory Seeker blog. I really had to tune myself in with my son to help encourage him to have his teeth cleaned and I wanted to pass that information on. I have had good feedback from it and even had an occupational psychologist asking for my advice in the comments.

Do you have any specific goals for 2016?

This year I am focusing on myself and my family. Blogging is really going to take a back seat more and I have made a move to using Instagram more.

Meet The Bloggers - Rachel from umeandthekids

Today in my Meet The Bloggers series I am talking to Rachel from the blog umeandthekids. The idea behind Meet The Bloggers is to find out about bloggers you love or discover new blogs you haven't heard of before.

Can you tell my readers about yourself and your blog.

My name is Rachel and I blog at umeandthekids, a Parenting and Lifestyle blog. I love to feature party ideas for kids and teen advice posts.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I had to stop working due to getting M.E and still wanted to communicate with the world. I started reading other blogs and thought why not and I started my own blog and haven't looked back.

Tell me your proudest blogging achievement.

When I have been approached by big brands who want to work with me and my blog, the comments I have received from my lovely readers and how my competition linky has gone from 10 people joining to over 150 every week!

What brands have you enjoyed working with?

I loved working with Coca Cola, Lush, Yankee Candles and more recently L'Oreal.

What brands would you like to work with in the future?

I would love to work with more beauty brands like Benefit and MAC as I am a massive fan of their products.

Do you have any tips for new bloggers?

Don't compare yourself to other blogs and be proud of the small steps you will take at first.

What is your most popular blog post to date?

My fear on having my second baby and would I ever love them the same as my first child http://umeandthekids.com/second-baby-can-love/ I got some great feedback and didn't realise just how many people felt the same.

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

In 2015 I started doing party posts and love coming up with themed party posts, It makes me want to be a kid again!

Do you have any specific goals for 2016?

To be more organised and attend more blogging events like Brit Mums again.

Meet The Bloggers - Angela From Cosmic Kick

Today in my Meet The Bloggers series I am talking to Angela from the blog Cosmic Kick.

Can you tell my readers about yourself and your blog.

Hi everyone! I'm Angela. A South Wales based lifestyle blogger and freelance writer. I'm a gamer, tech addict, peanut butter nut and music fanatic.
My blog is Cosmic Kick. It's where I share the things I'm excited about; from beauty products to music to games. I have a ton of interests so finding a niche for my blog continues to be a challenge but I wouldn't have Cosmic Kick any other way.

I talk from time to time about my health too. I have PCOS and tinnitus, so be sure to pop over to the blog to see if any of my posts can help out at all.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I started my first blog way back in 2004 when I moved out and got my very own internet connection. It was back in the days when MSN Messenger was huge and they had just released their own blogging platform called MSN Spaces. I wanted a way to publically share what I'd found online with all of my MSN contacts. It's so exciting to see how blogging has exploded in that short space of time!

Tell me your proudest blogging achievement

It may not seem like much to some, but I'm really proud of how much I've learnt on my blogging journey so far. From basic coding to Photoshop to social media management; blogging requires a huge amount of learning. I've only scratched the surface – some of you guys are amazing! I don't know how you keep up with it all.

What brands have you enjoyed working with?

I've loved working with all of the brands featured on Cosmic Kick and fortunately I've never had a bad experience.

The guys over at The Hut Group are all absolutely lovely; always kind and friendly - especially the Look Fantastic team.

The printing company, Solopress ran a great promotion last year too giving a blogger the chance to win a billboard in their home town. The blogger outreach was fantastic and the concept was so much fun.

What brands would you like to work with in the future?

I really want to start working with more tech brands. Whether it's gadgets or services or games. I'm so excited about how technology is changing the world and writing about it really helps to keep up with the latest news.

I plan to start writing about plus size fashion more often – fitness gear in particular – and have a few ideas already for working with plus size clothing brands. It's so hard to find trendy plus size leisure wear!

Do you have any tips for new bloggers?

Above all else: Don’t stress it! By that I mean don't stress the numbers and stats, don't stress trying to fit in to blogging cliques, don't people please by writing posts you wouldn't normally write (although I'm sure we've all been there -  I know I have!). The more your stress about blogging the more you will see it as a chore. Write for yourself first.

What is your most popular blog post to date?

Aside from competitions I've ran which are always a hit, my most popular post is my Nourkrin Woman review: "Could Nourkrin Woman Help With PCOS Related Hair Loss?". I tell the story of my own hair loss and where I am at the moment. Hair thinning is one of the most depressing aspects of PCOS so if I come across a product that helps, my readers will be the first to know.

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

I worked on a post with Microsoft Lumia Voices last year titled "Microsoft Lumia 640 Review: #LumiaVoicesTrial"  which I really enjoyed writing. I've already confessed my love of tech and this post gained interest from a few other brands who got in touch with me as a direct result. I didn't get to keep the phone but it was well worth writing for that reason alone.

Do you have any specific goals for 2016?

I have really been slacking these last few months, but after going through a stressful period in life I'm now ready to give writing my all.

My goal for 2016 is to post more often. I have big plans for this year and beyond which I will be blogging about; including losing 100lb in weight and trying out the digital nomad life. I'd love for you to come along for the ride!

Meet The Bloggers - Linda From Mother Distracted

Today in my Meet The Bloggers series, I am talking to my friend Linda from the blog Mother Distracted. Linda has a lifestyle and parenting blog and lives in South Wales with her husband and school age children.

Can you tell my readers about yourself and your blog?

I write a lifestyle and parenting blog from the perspective of a woman who became a mum in her forties (twice). I cover a wide range of topics but particularly enjoy writing about relationships, health and parenting issues.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I left my job as a marketing director for a Cardiff law firm in 2007 to have my kids and, once they had arrived, although I found being a stay-at-home mum enjoyable, I needed sometime to keep my brain ticking over. I had a phase of being an avid comper (much to the Husband’s amusement) but now I just love to blog. My family just indulge me, although Caitlin (8) and Ieuan (6) really enjoy joining and will pose for a photo at the drop of a hat.

What are you favourite topics to write about and are there any posts you are particularly proud of?

I love writing about what it’s like for a woman in a corporate environment and how to survive the office jungle but my favourite post is my take on a Sherlock Holmes tale which I called The Curious Tale of Sherlock Holmes & A Mum’s Missing Career. I am rather fond of Benedict Cumberbatch and often drag the Husband to the local Bush Inn in St. Hilary where the “Hound of the Baskervilles” episode was filmed.

Tell me about your proudest blogging achievement?

Just managing to blog consistently. Blogging is such a personal thing and there are so many great blogs out there.

What blogs do you like reading yourself?

All and any. I am as likely to read beauty haul posts as I am to read blogger how-to’s and recipe posts. I’m a real magpie.

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

Linda's children

Probably this one from Raglan Castle - a great family memory. If you’ve ever tried playing hide ‘n’ seek in a castle, I’d advise taking a thermos and some sarnies. On that particular day, Ieuan had decided he was Usain Bolt’s son for some reason and was happily telling the other visitors about this surprising development in his parentage.

Do you have any specific goals for 2016?

I'm keen to grow my blog even further and to explore different styles of writing. I'd really like to write a crime novel so I may well test a few chapters on my readers!

Tell me have you read Linda's blog?

Meet The Bloggers - Rachel From BeautyqueenUK

Today I will be talking to Rachel from BeautyqueenUK.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I have always been part of online communities writing reviews on products and when a penpal friend of mine told me she had starting blogging, I started reading her posts, thinking 'I could do that' and I set up my first blog secretively to get a feel for how it would work re-hashing some product reviews from a site I was a member of. Then I set up Beautyqueenuk and then I was off.

What are your favourite  beauty products?

Now Mel, this is like a hard question.  The simple answer is I don't have a favourite product. If I had to narrow it down to products I couldn't live without - Lip Balm, Mascara, Perfume, Facial Mist Spray, an overnight mask, a balm cleanser and Hand cream. I never leave the house without mascara and I am a lip balm addict.  I double cleanse my skin every day, a apply an overnight mask a few times a week and facial mist and hand creams are my desk saviours for keeping my hands and face refreshed. Not forgetting perfume, for which I am addicted to!

What beauty trends are going to be big for 2016?

Bold Lips Is A Current Trend

Bold Lips is a definite thing right now, along with hair braiding and products that are 'anti-pollution' seem to be filling my inbox. That said there is always room for one or two surprises.

Tell me about your proudest blogging achievement.

Not long after I started blogging, I was contacted by the PR girls from Deciem, a company I have grown to love and adore. Deciem was about to launch Inhibitif, which has made quite a few appearances on my blog, and I was asked if I would like to trial it was 8 weeks.  Inhibitif is a product which leads to hair reduction not complete removal and there are products for legs, underarm, face and other body parts. I did the leg trial and was literally amazed at how brilliant it is, so good, I still use it today.  During those 8 weeks, I wrote regular posts to record my findings and then I was asked if it was okay to use my blog posts, results and photos not only in The Sun Newspaper but also on the product packaging - quite simply an amazing opportunity to be given.  Each one of those posts has just about hit the 100k mark for reads and I am honoured that a brand gave me that chance.

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

Makeup Revolution Ultra Base Corrector Palette

I have three or four that I enjoyed writing, but the one that changed things slightly for me is Makeup Revolution Ultra Base Corrector palette.  I have redness on my cheeks, it flares up when I am stressed and does give people cause to ask if I have a problem, this palette was the first one that actually worked to deal with the redness and conceal it.  Who knew green could neutralise redness in the same way purple conceals dark eye circles?  For me, this palette, which I have repurchased, gave me much more confidence.

One I was honoured to have written about is the Timothy Dunn Blue Rose Candle which is so personal to a very close blogger friend of mine, it was quite moving to receive, light and admire the scent.

Finally, advent calendars.  I adore advent calendars, always have and last there was over 40 beauty advent calendars to choose from and writing that post and constantly updating it, not only kept me on my toes, but kept me fascinated with which brands did which calendar and the race to see who would sell out and who would create the most elaborate and most expensive.

Do you have any advice for newbie bloggers?

Timothy Dunn Blue Rose Candle

Don't judge yourself on someone else. It is easy to get bogged down by stats, followers, likes, hearts and retweets. Blogging is a growing world and it takes time to get noticed, you won't ever become Zoella but there are things you can learn from people, just don't assume you will learn everything in a week, amass a million followers and be a household name.

What are your blogging goals for 2016?

Keep it fun.  So many people get themselves bogged down and overwhelmed with blogging.  I want it to remain fun and something I enjoy doing.  I work full time, I am a wife and my hubby also blogs, but when it stops being fun, I will stop doing it. Life is too short to not enjoy something.

Meet The Bloggers - Michelle From TSNC

Meet The Bloggers is a new series where I get to interview some of my favourite bloggers and get to highlight new bloggers too. If you would like to be included please give me a shout on social media.

Can you tell my readers about yourself and your blog?

Yes sure! My name is Michelle and I blog at Thou Shalt Not Covet

I've been running it for three years now, which I can't quite believe! I started off with a mixture of fashion, beauty and lifestyle posts, and I've found myself naturally veering towards beauty as my main focus. I write about anything that interests me, including product reviews, news and features.

What inspired you to start blogging?

Well I'd been reading blogs for a long time, and I'm a complete makeup fanatic. My friends aren't really 'into it' like I am, so I found myself spending more and more time online, reading, watching Youtube and chatting with like minded makeup lovers. A couple of the first bloggers I started reading were Tattooed Tea Lady and Fashion For Lunch, and I thought they were so cool! (I still do) and I just decided to give it a go myself!

What are your favourite three beauty products?

Only three??! Ok this is difficult, but I'll always include eyeliner in my top three, preferable intense black or bright blue. I usually go for pencil or pen style eyeliners - liquid ones just don't really do it for me. For budget I'd definitely say Bourjois is my favourite, and high end would probably be MAC.

Bourjois

My next must have product is definitely lipstick - in a nude / mauve for day time, and I love a statement intense red lip for the evening. Sleek is one of my favourite budget lipstick brands, and high end would be NARS, Tom Ford and Charlotte Tilbury.

My last must have product would probably be a contour powder. I love giving my face a bit more shape and emphasising my cheekbones. Rodial's Instaglam Contour Deluxe Contour Powder is fantastic but a tad pricey. For a budget option the Barry M Chisel Cheeks Contour Kit is great alternative.

What beauty trends are making an impact at the moment?

I'm seeing a lot of luminous skin coming up for spring summer, which I just love. Really natural looking, glowing-from-within complexions. It makes a refreshing change from the higher coverage matte finishes from Winter. Highlighters are also really big at the moment too - Becca's Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop is a must have! And the matte liquid lipstick trend is showing no signs of slowing down.

Tell me about your proudest blogging achievement?

This is a difficult one! I was a beauty blogger for beauty at Tesco this time last year, that was a complete wow moment for me! I also collaborated with Cohorted and chose the products for their December beauty box. That was pretty awesome too!

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

One of the ones that stands out for me is my 'How Much Do Blogger Earn' post.

I put a lot of work into researching this, and I loved how it started a conversation on the subject of earning money, which many bloggers don't really talk about. I see so many bloggers under valuing themselves, I think this should really be discussed more.

Do you have any specific goals for 2016?

In general terms I'd just like to improve - improve my photography, my writing, and refine my overall blog style. I'd also really like to up my Instagram game. I haven't really used it too much up until now so I really want to work on that. Same with Pinterest - oh and I want to figure out Snapchat too!

Meet The Bloggers - Kacie Morgan - The Rare Welshbit

Meet The Bloggers, is a new series where I get to interview some of my favourite bloggers and get to highlight new bloggers too. If you would like to be included please give me a shout on social media.

Kacie Morgan From The Rare Welsh Bit

Please can you tell my readers a little bit about yourself and your blog?

Hello! My name is Kacie Morgan. Based in Cardiff, I write the food and travel blog, The Rare Welsh BitSet up around five years ago, The Rare Welsh Bit features restaurant, product and travel reviews, recipes, giveaways and more.

The majority of restaurants that I review are based in South Wales but I have also covered a few in North, West and mid-Wales, London and even Jamaica.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I began blogging in November 2010, shortly after I graduated from Cardiff University with a BA degree in Journalism, Film and Media.

I attended an employability course run by the university and one of the tutors suggested that I start a blog in order to have a platform upon which to showcase my writing. I was quite passionate about good food and I had no desire to move to London (where most journalism jobs tend to be located), so I set up a Welsh food blog.

As time went on, I developed a passion for travel and so I decided to start writing about this on my blog as well.

What are your three favourite restaurants?

Laguna Kitchen And Bar, Cardiff

  • Moksh – Mermaid Quay, Cardiff Bay
  • Yaks n’ Yetis – Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire
  • Laguna Kitchen and Bar – Park Plaza, Cardiff
What is your favourite dish to cook?

There’s nothing I love to cook more than a roast dinner. I like to cook a variety of fresh veg and I usually cook chicken or lamb. Regardless of what I meat I have, I always serve it with a mound of stuffing, homemade Yorkshire pudding and lots of mint sauce. It makes me hungry just thinking about it! As I don’t live with my family, I don’t often bother to cook a roast dinner, but that just makes it all the more special when I get round to doing one!

Tell me about your proudest blogging achievement.

My proudest blogging achievement is getting shortlisted for Best in Food in Cosmopolitan’s 2015 Blog Awards. It was such an honour to attend the awards ceremony at One Marylebone in London; I had such a fantastic evening and I enjoyed meeting the other shortlisted bloggers.

Although I didn’t win, 64,000 bloggers entered the nominations and only 100 of us were shortlisted, so I was very proud simply to have reached this stage.

What is your favourite blog post of 2015 and why?

My favourite blog post is from Thou Shalt Not Covet and it features a survey of bloggers, the results of which offer real insight into how much bloggers actually get paid for different kinds of services. This post has helped me a lot in helping to decide upon my rates and it really stands out in my mind when I look back over the blog posts I read throughout last year. Here is the link: How much do bloggers really earn?

Of all the blog posts I wrote last year, my favourite one was my recipe for Ferrero Rocher cheesecake. This was sinfully scrumptious. I dread to think how many calories were in it, but it tasted so good that it was worth every single one!

Do you have any specific goals for 2016?

Blog-related goals:
  • Get into the habit of writing blog posts on weekends and scheduling them to be published throughout the week (when I am in work, and don’t have time to write posts)
  • Continue scheduling Facebook and Twitter posts in advance
  • Plan blog posts in advance (eg. Around events like Valentine's Day, St David’s Day, Christmas, national awareness days, etc)
  • Fix broken links (something I have NEVER done!)
  • Increase DA (hopefully fixing the links will help somewhat with this!)
  • Publish more travel content
  • Grow social media followers (especially Bloglovin’ and Pinterest)
  • Attend my first blogging conference, Traverse, in Cardiff in April
  • Post every three days, consistently (ideally, it would be more than this, but it’s difficult to fit it in around work, so I’d rather be consistent every three days!)
  • Find a better template
Other goals:
  • Lose weight
  • Be wiser with money (eg. Investing in a travel mug and decent coffee to avoid having to go to Starbucks every morning!)
  • Improve my freelance writing website
  • Travel more
  • Spend more time with friends and family
