How To Encourage Your Child to Be More Physically Active and Spend Time Outdoors

Spending time outdoors and having a physically active life is highly beneficial for individuals, regardless of their age. To support healthy development, kids should be encouraged to do this from a young age.

There are more distractions these days than they used to be, distractions that can keep children indoors. High-quality video games, digital devices and gadgets like smartphones and tablets keep children inside rather than outside with other kids playing football or other games. At the same time, these video games and game consoles have their advantages, such as helping children become tech-savvy from a young age and developing their technological and analytical capabilities. This can help them later in life, especially in today's world that has become almost entirely digital with technology embedded in personal and professional life. Therefore, video games and having access to technology while they are still so young can help them improve problem-solving skills and logical thinking.

However being outdoors and having a physically active life as a child is also highly beneficial, and parents should help and encourage their children to move more and connect with nature. When it comes to the benefits of physical activity and outdoor activities for children, these are as follows:

  • Improves overall physical and mental health; the risk of depression and anxiety can be reduced.
  • Better bone and muscle strength;
  • Developing and maintaining a healthy weight;
  • Better heart, lung and brain health;
  • Better academic performance, given that the child’s attention and memory are improved;
  • Builds mental and emotional resilience and physical endurance;
  • Improves communication and social skills and helps kids be more self-aware;
  • Greater appreciation for the environment and nature, which can lead to the adoption of sustainable behaviours.

As it can be seen, there are many benefits to spending time outside and being physically active from a young age. Therefore, parents should support their kids and help them get to safely know what the outside world has to offer through play. For example, if you have a backyard garden, you should create a playground corner with safe equipment from Fatmoose, such as swing sets of various designs and sizes.

Choosing the right activities is of the utmost importance. It is crucial to pick the ones that are suitable for your child’s age, align with their preferences and likes, and are interactive and fun enough to catch their attention and encourage them to take part in them. Children won’t be interested in something they don’t regard as entertaining and aren’t in line with what they like doing. For this reason, it is crucial to listen to your child and see what their likes are and find activities that could be appealing to them. Whether you install a playground space or sign them up for volleyball lessons, for example, the important thing is to listen to their needs.

Here are some of the ways you can encourage your kid to spend more time outdoors and be more physically active from a young age:

Set up a playground in your garden with exciting activities

So, how can you get your kids outside? Set up a playground in your garden with interesting features and activities that will appeal to them.

For example, you could install a climbing frame with slide, swings, and other features children can have fun with either by themselves or with other children. This way, not only do they spend time outside, but they also increase their physical activity which will improve their health and when they play with others, develop social skills.

And if you have a backyard or front-yard garden at home, you could enjoy this playground from the comfort of your home and use it to spend more time together as a family.

Host outdoor parties and playdates where they can gather all their friends

Another great way to encourage your child to spend more time outside and increase their physical activity is by hosting parties or playdates outdoors. Whether you have a yard or not, you can still organise and host this, given there are many outdoor public places properly decorated and designed for playdates and children’s parties you could book.

If you host such activities, your child has the opportunity to gather all their friends and spend time with them. Through play and activities, such as crafts, playing sports or playing board games, for example, they get to spend time outside and learn how to take turns and the rules of gamesmanship. Not to mention that they can run around and be surrounded by nature simultaneously.

Incorporate physical activity within the family’s routine

Leading by example is highly effective. If you incorporate physical activity within a healthy family routine, children see this and recognise it as something they should do as well. Whether you take walks in the park, go cycling, play a sport together, or go hiking, it is up to you and your lifestyle.

Regardless of the physical activity, you decide to do as a family frequently, the important aspect is to do it with your children so they can learn the benefits of this from a young age. This way, when it comes to encouraging your child to play outside, they will be even more excited.

Emphasise the fun aspect of being and playing outside

You should never underestimate the importance of emphasising the fun aspect of spending time and playing outside.

Therefore, to make this aspect more appealing, you should show your children how exciting it can be. During summer, if they meet their friends outside, they can run around freely and even play with water, while during wintertime, they can make snowmen or have a snowball fight. No video game can ever beat that. So, the secret is to show them the appeal while listening to them and being aware of your child’s likes and dislikes.

How to Make Your Bathroom Smell Nicer

Cleaning the house is an inevitable task and one we often dread. Even as we spend our days keeping on top of the washing-up and laundry loads, the ever-pressing burden of the weekend ‘deep clean’ weighs heavily on our minds – with the bathroom the worst room of the lot.

A recent survey found that as many as 1 in 5 UK adults only clean their bathroom when they know they have guests coming. Is it any wonder that bathroom odours can be so hard to get rid of? Here are some quick tips for fixing your bathroom’s smell…

Regular Cleaning

It should come as no surprise to you that a regular cleaning routine can consistently improve the smell of your bathroom. Keeping a routine ensures that nothing can build up, and makes using the bathroom much more pleasant overall. Your cleaning rota should include weekly, monthly and seasonal tasks, to ensure everything is kept up comprehensively and hygienically.

Cleaning your bathroom regularly can also help you eliminate certain possibilities for the location of your bathroom’s odour – and allow you to narrow any problem smells down to their original location. It can be common for grime to accumulate in the overflow drains of your bath and sink, for example – places you don’t commonly think to clean. By keeping to a cleaning rota, you may be more likely to notice these things, and better able to clean as a result.

Wash Your Mats and Towels

Some things that may escape your regular cleaning routine are your washables – which aren’t just limited to towels, and hand towels, but can also include bathmats and shower curtains amongst other things. Washing these thoroughly can help prevent that familiar ‘damp’ smell and the propagation of black mould that can sometimes result.

If your bathmat exhibits dark spots, mould or mildew is already present and the mat should be deep cleaned. You may also want to consider re-coating your bathroom walls and ceiling with a specialised bathroom paint, to prevent the growth of mildew and mould there.

Ventilate Your Bathroom

Another key weapon in the fight against dampness and mould is airflow. Ensuring your bathroom is well-ventilated at all times, or at least when in use, ensures that humid air can leave with ease – preventing condensation from wreaking too much havoc in your bathing space.

Extractor fans are the usual way to ventilate a space, but windows can be opened in a pinch. If you do not have an extractor fan, it could be well worth your while to get one installed. This way, you can ensure airflow without compromising temperature.

Introduce Air Freshener

Naturally, introducing good smells can help neutralise bad smells. Using potpourri can be a great way to do this, being as much decoration as it is utility. Fragrance sprays are powerful options too – and if you’re a little concerned about sustainability, it is remarkably easy to make your fragrance spray to your tastes!

A secret ‘life hack’ of sorts for neutralising smells without the pomp and circumstance is to stash a bowl of baking soda somewhere inconspicuous – or to even dump it down the drain. The cooking ingredient can trap and neutralise scent particles, making the bathroom naturally fresher.

Tips On How To Be Less Irritable At Home

We all get irritable occasionally but if you’re frequently feeling on the edge and frustrated, it can wreak havoc on your personal life and make being at home no fun for you or your loved ones. Because irritability is often a symptom of anxiety, it’s easy to become trapped in a cycle of bad temper and apprehension that sucks the joy out of family time. Here are three tips on how to reduce irritability when you’re spending time at home.

1 Find Some Alone Time

Irritation and anxiety both activate your body’s fight or flight response, making you feel like the only relief you can get are by either setting off a conflict or fleeing the people or situations that are causing this reaction. Because picking a fight is rarely productive, it’s a much smarter option to step away for some alone time when you feel your frustration escalating.

Just finding a quiet spot in your home in which you can read, listen to music, or meditate may be enough to calm you. Having homeopathic anxiety relief pills on hand can also reduce your symptoms and rebalance the brain that may be the root of this excessive stress. Taking a break from your family and seeking natural relief can help you emotionally reset and reduce irritability.

2 Step Away From the Screen

There’s increasing evidence that too much screen time is harmful to your mental state. Using devices in the evening disrupts healthy sleep patterns, which results in problems like low energy levels and increased irritability. The type of content you view online can also add to your anxiety, be it overwhelming negative news about the world or tense social media interactions.

By disconnecting at least two hours before bedtime, you’ll mitigate some of these ill effects. You could read a book, do some relaxing adult colouring or better still, swap out your screen time and get outdoors, exercise, and interact with your family in meaningful ways. If you need a push, activate your device’s time monitor to remind you when it’s time to unplug.

3 Watch What You Drink

herbal tea
It may surprise you to learn that beverages you drink every day might be contributing to your irritability. If you’re prone to anxiety and anger, cutting back on caffeine and alcohol may help.

When it comes to your morning coffee, the energy boost you get may be cancelled out by the stress caffeine can induce. Similarly, while alcohol can help you relax, it may also amplify your feelings of frustration and lower your inhibitions to the point that you’re more likely to become angry. If you moderate or eliminate your intake of both caffeine and alcohol, you may notice a decrease in irritability. Instead, try some herbal tea like green tea, red bush or chamomile tea, or up your intake of water.

From spending time alone unwinding to watching your screen time and what you drink, there are plenty of things you can do to decrease irritability. For added help, turn to a trusted online retailer for natural anxiety medication over the counter to incorporate into your mood management. The more you can do to defeat feeling anxious and irritable, the happier you’ll be and so will your family.

But with proper planning and safety precautions, you can accomplish your move without overexertion. Check out these helpful hacks to keep you cool and cosy during your summer move.

Make a Game Plan

woman with moving box

As the famous adage goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. Check the weather forecast, especially the temp and humidity. You also want to plan your route, especially if it involves a long drive. After all, you don’t want to be stuck on the hot and humid road. You also don’t want to take a break in a place without air conditioning.

For best results, map out your route and research places along the way. It’s best to have more information so you can prepare better. Pinpoint potential rest stops for your physical and mental health. Everyone needs a break now and then, especially in something as stressful as moving during summer.

Pack Accordingly

You may have sensitive items that don’t move well in the heat. Examples are perishable food, certain electronics, indoor plants, and even candles. Since you invested money on these precious belongings, you don’t want them damaged during a high-temp move.

You have to make an extra effort to pack them well. Plan for these items and prepare special bins. For example, you can use coolers with ice packs for food. You can also use a protective heat cloth for your electronics. Separate these sensitive items and move them ahead so they won’t have to stay longer outdoors. This will prevent food spoilage and material damage.

Stay Hydrated

One of the essential things you need to pay attention to during a summer move is your water intake. Experts recommend drinking at least 8 glasses of water on average per day. After all, the body is made up of 60% water, and it needs the optimal amount to perform normal functions.

But when you’re engaged in lifting heavy boxes while fully exposed to the sun, you need to drink more to stave off dehydration. Your body sweating requires more water for thermal regulation. To keep you safe, replenish your fluids with cool water. You can also take sips of electrolyte drinks to prevent you from sweating out precious minerals.

Wear Sunblock and Reapply

When you’re moving in the summer, you’re likely to transport things from the car or moving truck to the house repetitively. With the risk of exposure to harsh UV rays, you must wear sunblock with at least SPF 30 and broad spectrum coverage. Bear in mind that sun rays can result in the following:

  • Sunburn
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Photoaging
  • Melanoma or skin cancer

Therefore, you must stay vigilant with sun protection. And it’s not enough to just apply in the morning. You have to reapply every two hours, especially if you’re staying outside and sweating. It would help set a reminder in your cell phone and keep the sunblock in your pocket for easy application.

Wear Suitable Clothing

Dress in comfy clothes made from lightweight, breathable material. This promotes airflow and prevents you from overheating. You can also opt for clothes with built-in SPF to protect you against sun rays.

You can opt for moisture-wicking fabrics that draw sweat away from the body so it evaporates fast. Consider dressing in layers so you can take them off as your body temperature gets warmer through the day.

Try to Get Things Done in the Morning

Pack up and unload your moving truck as early as you can. You want to avoid the midday heat when the sun is at its peak and harshest. Besides, you’ll be a lot comfier in the morning sun while getting your dose of vitamin D.

Usually, the heat peaks between noon and 3 p.m., so it’s best to avoid staying outdoors during this time. Make early preparations, drive the moving truck when it’s still dark outside, and begin unloading things to your new home just as the sun rises.

Work Smarter

packaging equipment
When moving in summer, working smarter and not harder gives you the most benefits. Follow your game plan, but rest when your body calls for it. Moving can be tiring, especially when it’s hot and humid. It’s important to rest to avoid overheating, overexertion, and dehydration. Taking breaks is more productive than forcing yourself to power through when you’re already exhausted.

And don’t be ashamed to ask for help. When you get assistance from family and friends, you reduce your working hours and get things done faster. Or employ professional packers and movers to make moving house even easier. As a result, you don’t have to stay out in the summer sun for too long, letting you look forward to
 chilling and unwinding in your new abode with the people you care about.

Why You Need To Get Your Gutters Cleaned Due To Clogged Gutters

One of the most overlooked tasks when it comes to home maintenance and improvement is the cleaning of gutters, and I understand exactly why! It's disgusting, to say the least - especially if you are trying to do it without any experience. This is where professionals come in, they know exactly what to do without causing too much mess and with the knowledge of how to repair gutters as well as clean them safely.

gutter of house

Some of the issues that can be caused by clogged gutters are:

Leaking Roofs

The first tell-tale sign that your gutters are clogged or not working properly is your roof leaking. This usually happens when the gutter is clogged, so the rainwater is unable to make its way to the downspout. As a result, it starts collecting on the top of the roof and, unable to drain, seeps into the roof structure. This causes your roof to leak. A leaking roof brings a whole set of problems, the worst one being wood termites. When water makes the wooden structure under the roof moistm it can attrack termites. They can cause a lot of damage as they eat away at the wood in the foundation of the roof and can cause the roof to collapse.

There are a few ways you can figure out if your gutters are clogged before your roof starts leaking. The very first method is to pay attention to your surroundings. Has there been an increase in animal activity? If yes, it is likely that they are making a nest or are using your clogged gutters as their water source. This can lead to further problems like rodents and pest infestations.

The second and most easy way to figure out if your gutters are clogged is by observing them during rainfall. Is the water making its way to the downspout? Or are the gutters flowing over at the sides? If they are, they are likely clogged.

Shift In The Foundation

One of the biggest issues that people face when it comes to clogged gutters is the shift in the foundation. The shift in foundation usually occurs when the water from the downspout is being drained too close to your house. This is one of the most expensive things to fix as well. The water from your downspout, when drained near the foundation, seeps into the soil and causes soil erosion. This in turn causes your entire house to start shifting. This happens because the eroded soil leaves holes in the ground, making the foundation unsteady.

A shifting foundation has its own set of problems. The very first is a flooded basement. This happens when the water from the soil underneath the house seeps into the basement. Other than this, you might also start noticing that there are cracks in the walls and the ceiling because of the shifting foundation. If not taken care of in time, it can lead to your whole house collapsing!

Can You Clean Gutters Yourself?

The answer to this is yes but also no. Yes, you can clean your gutters yourself once you know how to do it properly. For this, you will need to observe how a professional works with clogged gutters. However, it is important to note that the professionals often use special equipment to clean the gutters and this can be expensive. It is also an extremely messy job that can cause you health issues. However, if you do want to do it yourself, there are two methods you can use:

1) Using a ladder and 2) Standing on the ground

For those who have never cleaned gutters themselves, it is important that they DON'T use a ladder. It can be dangerous, especially if you don’t have someone else there to make sure you don’t fall. The easiest and best way to do this is by using a water or air hose from the ground. If you live in an area that faces a lot of rainfall, then your gutter waste is most likely to be wet. This also means that you should not be cleaning them yourself as the waste can be rotting and can make you sick. Ask a professional for advice by clicking here. Wet waste means you will have to use a water hose and the job might get messy. On the other hand, if you live in a dry area, a simple air hose should be fine to clear up the debris. Make sure you always buy the special attachment for cleaning the gutters!

If you are going to use ladders, make sure that you use ladder stabilisers so that you don’t fall. If you can't find this, make sure you always have someone out with you who can stabilise the ladder. Moreover, it is also important to remember that if you have wet waste, you will need a bag as well as a shovel to shovel it all out. The bag can get heavy easily and you mustn’t put too much stuff in it.

Best Ways To Keep Busy

Keeping busy is good for the mind and there are a lot of fun and productive things you could get on with rather than sitting around on your couch all day. Even though it may seem like there isn’t much to do, all you need is a little thought to occupy yourself.

sewing

I have gone ahead and put together a short list of some of the best ways to keep busy. Maybe not all these suggestions will be for you, but you should never turn down the chance to try something different. Anyways, let’s get straight into the list.

Go Swimming

Swimming is a brilliant form of exercise, when you swim you use almost every muscle in your body. It may have been a long time since you last went to a swimming pool but why not try going again as it’s such a great way to keep fit.  I'm often surprised that more people don’t do it. If you don’t actually know how to swim then why not use some of your spare time as an opportunity to learn? Due to how good it can make you feel both mentally and physically, going for a swim is undoubtedly one of the best ways to keep busy.

Go To A Restaurant

If you are tired of ordering takeaways and making your own dinners then why not head to one of your favourite restaurants and treat yourself a little? You could go by yourself, but it is usually more fun if you bring a friend or family member with you. It could be someone you haven’t spoken to in a while or someone you are very close with, it doesn’t matter! Having your dinner made for you in the cosy atmosphere of a nice restaurant is incomparable to anything else. It's also a great excise to get dressed up.

Work On Your Curb Appeal

Keeping the outside of your home in good shape is something you should always be keeping on top of. Subtle improvements such as cutting your grass or painting your fence are very productive and a great way to keep busy. Your neighbours are sure to see the effort that you have put in.  One great example of how you could improve your curb appeal is to clear out your gutters. If they get blocked, the build-up of grass and moss can cause them to sag which can really ruin the aesthetic appeal of your home and garden. If you want to have your gutters cleaned out, then click here. This might be the best option for you though if it's a big job.

Head To A Theme Park

Going to a theme park is a great day out! It may have been years since you went to your local theme park, but it could be a nice wave of nostalgia to return, and it could realise your inner child. Many theme parks have a really wide range of things to do, so you don’t have to worry if you aren’t the biggest fan of rollercoasters so there is no need to worry. Some theme parks have activities such as amusement arcades, bumper cars, ten-pin bowling, mini-golf and more.

Watch A Movie Marathon

A cosy night in with some tasty snacks and your favourite movies is sometimes much better than leaving the house. After a long hard week, you may not feel like going out so you can keep entertained in the comfort of your own home. You could even invite one of your friends to participate in the marathon with you. There’s a range of film franchises from which you can choose, such as Harry Potter, or Marvel films, or why not watch a horror marathon or some romantic comedies? We all need some escapism sometimes.

Get Creative

Embracing your creative side could be one of the best ways to keep busy. Why not take a quick trip down to your local store and buy some art supplies? It could even be a good idea to look up some ideas online for something to draw or make, and there are plenty of cool tutorials on YouTube. Knitting and sewing are back in fashion too. Getting creative is without a doubt one of the best ways to keep busy.

I hope your enjoyed reading my short list of the best ways to keep busy and it has given you some nice ideas on how to spend your free time. It's important to relax and do something you enjoy after a long hard week.  There are plenty of ideas that I didn’t mention, but with a little thought, you will come to find that there is in fact a huge variety of activities out there!
