5 Reasons To Visit Mauritius

Mauritius is one of those places that captures your heart, and your soul after all Mark Twain can't be wrong. He wrote "'Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius'.

Idyllic Mauritius

Mauritius is known for it's lovely beaches and warm azure waters, and rightly so, but there is so much more to this island in the Indian Ocean than that.

See beautiful wildlife

They say Mauritius has saved more species of bird from extinction than anywhere else. As well as the amazing birds such as the beautiful pink pigeon, spot whales, dolphins and sharks in the beautiful clear waters.

If you are a real nature lover, take a trip to Ile aux Aigrettes, a 26 hectare island nature reserve just off Mauritius. This lovely little island surrounded with blue lagoons is home to giant tortoises roaming free and an abundance of wildlife.

Eat amazing food

The food in Mauritius is a melting pot of Creole, Indian, Chinese and French influences. Known for it's street food, why not try Sev, which is a crispy noodle-like snack or a Roti Chaud, an Indian flat bread served with spicy curry, whilst those with a sweet tooth can enjoy
Cassava or Vermicelli pudding.

When you want something more refined, try one of the many excellent Mauritian restaurants many serving French cuisine or fusion food such as Le Chamarel Restaurant perched on the side of the mountain and Le Château de Bel Ombre, a candlelit restaurant in a colonial mansion, a perfect setting for a romantic meal.

Take part in a range of awesome activities

Windsurfing is one of the many watersports in Mauritius

From windsurfing, snorkelling, and kitesurfing, to hiking, horse riding and golf, Mauritius has a range of activities for those adventurous and not so adventurous amongst us.

After your strenuous day activity why not have a relaxing massage in one of the many luxurious spas, or what about a manicure, pedicure or facial?

Visit the local attractions

If you love plants and flowers the the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden otherwise known as Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, is widely regarded as one of the best in the world, or take a trip to the Natural History Museum in Port Louis, where you can find out about the Dod
o, the extinct bird which used to inhabit Mauritius.

To find out about the Colonial heritage of the island visit Eureka. This Creole mansion build in the 1830's provides an insight into the island's plantation past. Whilst the Rhumerie de Chamarel is a distillery where you can see how rum is made from sugar cane and have a rum tasting after - delicious!

Shop, shop and shop again

From local markets where you can grab a bargain haggling to shopping malls with fixed prices, Mauritius is a mecca for shopping. Bagatelle Mall is the place for shopping brands with names such as Hugo Boss, Samsung and Aldo whilst try Grand Baie Bazaar or the craft market in Port Louis for those authentic local souvenirs.

When you've done all these things there is one last thing to do, sit down with a cool drink, and watch one of the famous Mauritius sunsets. Bliss.
